    • PCs Backup software that can isolate backup destination to protect from Ransomware virus.

      Dear all,

Looking for backup software for Windows environment with following requirements:

      1. Software that can isolate backup destination to protect from ransom-ware so that PC got infected will not effect backup target.

      2. Software can take snapshot or system image.

      3. Of course schedule backup and data retention option.

      4. Centralized Management.

      5. Good price, of course:)

The backup destination will be NAS box and we got around 100 PCs.

I prefer perpetual(one time payment) license.

      Thanks all !

    • Not seeing traffic for O365 emails at 587, 993 and 995 ports on Firewall.

      Hi all,

I want to monitor emails traffic at Firewall to track any spam emails have been sending from any computers on network (if there are any spam passing through, I will track back the pc and scan it for virus/ malware).

But I am not seeing any traffic at all for our domain (O365 emails) at Firewall for emails on ports 587, 993 and 995. Is that because of Outlook connecting directly to exchange server over HTTP or HTTPS ? If yes, how it's going to use these ports (as mentioned on ports used for O365 on MS Website) And how can I track or figure out spam emails ? (I guess, spam emails should hit at firewall at some port if it is a spam)

      Any hints ?

    • What job titles will fit my skills?

      Dear All,

I have been in IT for some 6 years now, following are the areas I am working and I have knowledge. As you know IT is broad, I feel titles like IT support, Desktop Support, Service Desk Analyst, System Administrator will fit for me, but I realised , in big companies titles may vary, so if I need to Google for new jobs, it is necessary for me know more about titles as well.

I understand that, I also need to consider the Job description to understand if I can fit for that position, but still need to know commonly used titles for following skill sets:

      • Help Desk Support/ IT Support
      • Windows Server Administration (file server, AD)
      • Email Administration (O365)
      • Virtualization Administration (Hyper-V, VMWare ESXi)
      • Storage (NAS)
      • Anti-virus Administration
      • IP Telephony - Clients and basic knowledge on IP-PBX server
      • Basics on Networks
      • Network Monitoring
      • Remote Desktop Tools
      • Printers Administration
      • IT Assets Management
      • Backup Administration
      • Patch Management
      • VPN Management

While my current title is "System Administrator", I have to handle all IT stuff, as know in SMBs. Just because my title is SysAdmin, I will not hesitate to go with "IT Support/Service Desk Analyst etc." positions, why not if pay is more than my current one.

      Thanks for suggestions.

    • What is SodiumSuite ? Is that ready for production use ?

      Hello all,

I heard of SodiumSuite a lot here in this community. So I have registered, and I found it to be some agent-based monitoring and management tool, so I ran the agent on some test VM, it didn't shown anything on my account on https://sodium.waxquixotic.com after few days I logged in again, I found it pulled the information of Windows system, but cannot do anything like add/remove software, windows updates etc.

So what exactly SodiumSuite is ? is that alternative for Manage Engine's Desktop Central, Comodo One RMM Suite ?

where we can manage (add/remove) software, install patches, remote control etc. ?

I am seeing so many things coming soon on my account, is that ready for production use at all ?

      What's the official site ?

      Thanks !

    • Comodo One Free-Feedback, specially abt Patch Management vs PDQ Deploy Free.

      Hello All,

I was going through the Comodo One Free. I assume this free is for Business purpose too.

I found Patch Management is included in this Package.

Anyone have experience on it ? how good it is when compared to PDQ Deploy Free Edition ?

      I guess it's only cloud, no on-premises ?

      Appreciate your response !

    • RE: IT is Complex

      Great write-up !!

It takes me to positive side (while I used to have negative feelings sometimes due to bothering issues once in a while).

But the problem is Management (non-IT) and end users do not realize this 🙂

So many users thinks, IT is like "Run Application -> Next -> Next -> Finish" , "Take the screw driver and fix few drives and RAMs" and worst cases are when users says "AC is not working in my office".

And some end users and Management (non-IT) thinks IT guy can do programming, DBA work, fixing computers, networks, web development etc..... 😞 which drives crazy to us.

@scottalanmiller have you already wrote up this article in SW too ?

I believe this article should be highlighted till it reaches to my Management and end-users 😉

    • Do I need help desk system ?

      Hello all,

We have 100+ users with very few people in remote location. And I am the only one IT guy in our company + we have basic AMC from other Service Provider (I will take help from them while I am rush in issues, and network related stuff).

For any issues, users give a phone call (around 80%), few emails and very directly ask to assist. We don't use any Remote Control software to support but directly attending to user's desk.

As I am only person in IT, I don't have any supervisors/manager to report when it comes to technical things, but I need to coordinate with Finance Dept. for IT purchases.

One thing is, I don't maintain any log for complaints (IT issues) anywhere (neither on note book nor excel log), but only issues came through emails will remain as record. Here I am not talking about documentation of IT resources, but only about Helpdesk related logs/complaints.

Is that necessary to have record/maintain complaints and resolutions for them ?

Further do I need Helpdesk system in my Scenario ?

If Yes, two Helpdesk software to my mind :

      1. Spiceworks Helpdesk : As you know it's free with support. I like it's simple interface, mobile app to be active on the Go or instant reaction etc.
      2. ManageEngine Service Desk Plus (standard free) : Other idea is, if I am going to start some Helpdesk, why not use something industry aware for their (maybe it will add an advantage in my CV profile if I look further in other company ? I don't know how SW HD will be recognized in the industry ?). On other hand, ME Service Desk is saying ITIL based/compliant Helpdesk, how's it going to fetch in knowledge or career ?

If I go with setting up Helpdesk system, I need to respond on all tickets, need to update, close, open tickets on behalf of management, guiding users to do so , of course I need to spend extra time to do all above. Is that reasonable to do/realistic for me ?

      Appreciate your suggestions !!

An HTML5 based Hyper-V Management platform with VM web-console, similar to Kimchi-Project, but for Hyper-V.

I felt same, as I have used XenServer with XenCenter and went to Hyper-V to have a look, and it's not straight forward, it needs tweaking and bit PowerShell knowledge (which I don't have), still not using Hyper-V because of not easy like XenCenter 🙂

    • Is not bringing PCs in Domain is a sin?

      Hi,

I started here few years ago, at that time I was not serious about moving from workgroup computers to domain. Some computers were home edition, due to consumer model laptops were purchased, so got with home edition, which is one of the reason for not.

We have windows server 2012, AD installed and using for File Server, now slowly we have some 75 computers, and very less home editions.

It is going fine, but am I doing wrong? missing something? or not using Domain is sin 🙂

I started thinking to move to domain asap. Thanks!

While I never used Samba or Linux shares, but I believe, better to create a separate shared folder for each dept. such as Finance, HR etc. which can make life easier, instead of sharing the only folder and placing one folder/directory for each dept. and working on sub-folder permissions.

    • Which IT role I am suitable and to which should I apply for ?

      Hello All,

I am willing to change my job and not sure what is my status and for which role I am suitable.

Following is the quick review of my job career :

As discussed in my other thread, Title is not reflecting my job responsibilities.

      1. Worked as Linux Admin for 8 months : Not much to tell here. I became familiar with Linux and open source, of course learned the concepts of DNS, DHCP, Web server, File server, RAID etc.

      2. Working as System Admin from 3.5 years : I learned lots of stuff here.

Even though my title is System Admin, I am one who handles everything in IT dept. Following are categories I handles:

      a) Windows Server : Having File Server as a primary service and DNS on it.
      b) Helpdesk Support : Addresses all complaints, from printers, telephones to PCs.
      c) Email : We have O365, and I administers from creating, setting up to troubleshooting and coordinating with Microsoft support for any issues.
      d) Firewall : I manage firewall things, most basic things like adding rules, blocking things, allocating good bandwidth to specific users.
      e) Networking : Even though I am not good at it, but I manage basic things. I can configure general routers, access points, extenders etc.
      f) Misc : VPN (managing on Firewall), using DDNS and port forwarding services, printers management (having 10s of private and network printers), network monitoring with PRTG,
      g) Backup admin : Manage backups for Data and Server.
      h) Anti-virus admin: Setup and administer Anti-virus on all PCs.
      i) Familiarity : I am familiar with Linux, Virtualization (using XenServer), Cloud (have used Google Cloud Compute and storage).

Note: We are talking about 70+ users. Even though our network in not under Domain, I am familiar with how things works with AD. Trying to learn and certify on Windows Server to get good command to migrate to Domain.

Now question is, my title says "System Administrator" and my knowledge on AD and experience is very less (assuming going to choose Windows environment job) and years of total experience is 4.2 Years. I guess "System Admin" post require 5-8 years of experience.

In my job location, Support L1/L2/L3/L4, system admin, IT admin everything is same and that's me 🙂

So what's my status now and for what I should apply for ?

Tagging the IT Pros who helped me in other posts recently 🙂

Sometimes, I really get excited to try new things like Zabbix now, Grafana soon, even by ignoring the real work 😉

even if not I'm good at linux/ open source things, I feel, being in touch with Open Source things, I have enthusiasm to try new things....?

We use it already extensively and have a project underway to get even more. We have Zabbix five on hundreds of nodes today, thousands soon. It's been very good. Replacing all other RMM with it currently.

I've installed version 5 to look at getting more out of it, like finally getting the agent on all Windows server and Linux server VM's. Then using SNMP on more network devices like switches, routers, AP

Also installed Grafana to have a look at soon.

Sounds good and trying the same. Share some pics, once you pipe Zabbix collection to Grafana, to see how attractive it is 🙂

    • Want Offsite backup - how with NAS ?

      Dear All,

I am planning for Offsite backup. As of now we have onsite backup in the office on QNAP NAS box. Probably the Offsite backup copy will be in authorized person's house, so I will require to use Internet and I believe we can do it easily with some NAS box in market.

      Queries:

      1. Is that secure to use this type of connection ?( through internet) since there are dangerous virus like Cryptolock, so it could be dangerous if Offsite backup device is always connected. Need to protect offsite backup with any possible risks.
      2. Probably QNAP will have some easier solution for this offsite (not replication).
      3. Maybe once in week or month will be fine backups will be fine ?

      Thanks.

    • Resources for mastering Linux and getting RHCSA certification.

      Hi there,

I have total of 8 years of IT Experience as IT Generalist mostly. Current position is in Windows environment.

I'm familiar with open source tools, and have little work experience on Linux (CentOS and Ubuntu).

Trying to stream line the career into following areas:

      1. Full time Linux Administrator
      2. DevOps
      3. System Administrator (Windows and Linux)

In this process, I want to learn Linux deeply and get RHCSA certification.

Thinking to get a course in Udemy (because it's cheap), and of course spinning RHEL 8 on VMs under Developer Plan etc. Any cheap or free book (soft) will be great, I will get it printed and study.

Any relevant suggestions are welcome, either with regards to Linux or Career.

    • whoami - your title and a slogan!

      Hi there,

Assume I'm pushing a command whoami to your brain 🙂 what the outcome would be? and please add a slogan.

      For myself:

IT Administrator - Jack of all trades but master of none.

I used to have System Administrator title, I let it change to IT Admin, because I was covering all IT things in SMB, I thought it would be more relevant, and helpful in next job.

      Go!
