@IgnaceQ said in If starting from scratch, would you suggest learning BASH or Ansible?:

Besides anisble there are other tools for remote tooling. In a linux world you need bash. this is a basic need.
On top of bash, it really depends on the environmnet you're in. I would suggest python on top of this. You can use python in ansible, chef, terraform, etc... Also on non linux environments, python is availlable (bsd, windows).

He needs Ansible because he's doing an Ansible based certification path.

      Hi there,

Anyone of you ever came across SUSE Manager?

While it is saying open source and it is letting to download evaluation copy with subscription key on email?

I believe SUSE Manager kind product I'm looking, especially for patching CentOS and SUSE servers.

      Any clue?

Why not use Ansible or Salt?

These are what I'd generally recommend.

I assume you mean CentOS Stream?

Honestly it is a more viable solution for a Linux server than CentOS ever was as it is no longer so out dated.

But, I would give the entire RHEL ecosystem a wide berth at this point.

Windows servers are still relevant. Not everything can be accomplished on Linux.

So no rebuttal? No one suggested that Windows Servers aren't relevant, that was a very emotional response to saying that "requiring a specific OS" was a ridiculous problem to have in this day and age. Your response gives the impression that you are internally struggling with ascribing value to Windows and sense any suggestion that they are not absolutely necessary as an attack on your own value. Let it go dude, our professional value is not tied to vendor products. As IT folks, we can't care about one product over another, our whole value comes from being above that stuff. That's for best buy workers and Internet trolls, not business infrastructure decision makers who need to stay focused on how our decisions drive profits.

You make the wild claim that not everything can be accomplished on Linux. This flies in the face of all known programming knowledge since the beginning of computers. Care to elaborate what you know that no one else in the industry knows?

To add, the need for IT to run any server OS, on hardware or virtualize, is really starting to dwindle. With the direction modern management and practices are going, I can see both SMB and enterprise use of servers going the way of the Dodo.

While I generally agree - there will always be cases where situations warrant the performance of proximity to their data. Though I suppose this could be offset by putting both the data AND the desktop in the DC - then it's about the performance of the interface to that desktop. And as Scott loves to continue to mention, the US is a practical 3rd world country for internet access 😛

I've got a partial Linux Admin guide here on ML. @EddieJennings has a huge YouTube channel on exactly this. And my book on Linux Administration is scheduled to hit shelves in September.

You bothered to write a book? Isn't it going to be outdated before it's printed?

No, because it's well written. Tech actually doesn't move very fast.

Well CENTOS as an OS or product is dead. So deploying it for any reason makes little sense.

You can get 16 RH vms for free now (placatory) from RHEL now because of CENTOS being killed off.

Is it possible to pull info every port of switch, just like Spiceworks Networ Monitor used to do? If yes, what template I would need to use or any config? Most switches we have are Cisco SG300.
      swn.PNG

Yes, Cisco and general SNMP templates can be applied to the host and it will start to pull in information if you configured SNMP correctly.

@dbeato said in Microsoft 365 group Mailbox Full -How Backup and Delete emails to free up space?:

1- It only deletes the individual message they received.
2- The only tool is to do a E-discovery search for email sent to this Group and then exporting that to a PST.
3- Yes, 50 GB is the maximum storage for an Office 365 Business Basic and Standard
      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/exchange-online-service-description/exchange-online-limits#mailbox-storage-limits
You might want to setup an archiving addon for that mailbox or bump the license to E3 so they get 100 GB of Mailbox storage and then archiving is included as well.
4- YOu can setup a retention policy that deletes all items that is 2 years old and then apply to the mailbox and force the Retention Policy to apply then it will take a day or so but it will run faster.
      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/set-up-an-archive-and-deletion-policy-for-mailboxes?view=o365-worldwide

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/exchange/start-managedfolderassistant?view=exchange-ps (To force the retention policy)

Not sure if you misunderstood. I got confirmed that deleting any emails on Group Mailbox won't any member's mailbox items. Yes, did it that way, went well. Yeah, not an option for me now. Seems nice and faster action, than PowerShell commands Microsoft guys running.

I wrote the answer 1 in a confusing way. The emails don't get deleted from each user mailbox that received it so no issue there.

I'd heavily recommend not doing this at all. You get such a better, simpler system but just doing... nothing. Web hosting is easy, control panels are hard.

Sorry, not clear, could you elaborate?

Web hosting is a pretty basic task. Like... you copy files, you copy the database... voila. That's all you really do. It's all super easy stuff. Using a "panel" adds a lot of complication that you have to manage the panel and learn how it works - all stuff you could just skip by just doing a normal web server without the panel.

I've never seen a panel that made things easier, only harder. And it limits you a lot, generally they don't work with all of the pieces that you'd want to use so you end up with a half assed web server, with a heavy panel on top, that's more risky and more work, with no benefits.

I thought he was talking about something like how web hosts use cPanel. I like Vesta Control Panel, but there are some others such as CentOS Web Panel and ISPConfig. They all do everything.

That's what I mean, too. It makes using a web host so hard.

@CCWTech said in How can we recover data from Hard Drives were on RAID 10 without controller?:

You don't need a RAID card, in fact don't use one. There is a chance it will overwrite your data. Clone the drives, ONLY work on clones, never on patient drives.

      UFS Explorer Professional
      ReclaimMe Pro

What would you recommend for the cloning side of things?

If the drives are healthy, something like ddrescue does a good job. Cloning the entire drive (even empty sectors) is best.

If the drives are NOT healthy, you need professional data recovery equipment. (Ace Labs PC-3000 or at minimum a Deepspar DDI4). If you have a drive with a physical problem and you try to image it w/o professional data recovery gear, you have a good chance of never seeing the data again.

Only use Microsoft as a last resort when all other options have been explored. If you get paid by the hour disregard #1.

Here's another test. It shows that IPsec is more than 50% faster than WireGuard.
      alt text
      https://www.pcwrt.com/2020/02/performance-comparisons-of-three-vpn-protocols-on-a-budget-router/

Thing is that WireGuard uses the ChaCha20 cipher which is very efficient and fast on non-dedicated hardware. IPsec, and sometimes also OpenVPN, can however often use hardware acceleration on AES and is then faster.

It's the devices in each end and their architecture (ARM, x86 etc) and any hardware offloading that will determine what to pick for maximum performance on a VPN. And often it just doesn't matter - for instance when the hardware can handle encryption at WAN speed.

Nice thing about WireGuard is that it has just been included in the 5.6 kernel so soon enough it will be available by default on every linux system.

@Pete-S said in RAID - Two Arrays for Server? Array 1 for Windows Host and Array 2 for VMs and Data?:

      This is what we do.

      Option 3.
Hypervisor on satadom or small SSD drive.
Performance storage array with SSDs. Raid 1 or 10.
Capacity storage array with 3.5" HDDs. Raid 1 or 10.

Each VMs gets the kind of storage it needs. RAID1 is default for the arrays. RAID10 is only used when the capacity is needed (always as few drives as possible).

Right now I'm prepping a RAID 1 array 2x16TB that will go into one of our hosts.

      md4 : active raid1 sdm[1] sdl[0] 15625748288 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU] [>....................] resync = 0.6% (99811008/15625748288) finish=1322.2min speed=195699K/sec

We'll see how long it takes. Supposedly around 23 hours.

      Same here.

So you've moved to SSD with RAID 1 or RAID 10, no more RAID 5?
