The MOST common practice is to not use a GPU-based desktop. LXQt, XFCE, MATE, etc. are entire environments designed for that purpose.

There are no real changes I can make to just reduce the load though and still use fedora?

No one mentioned an alternative to Fedora. Everything we are talking about is ways of setting up Fedora.

      I meant Gnome, just misspoke

@Supreme_Overlord since the will probably be used for Steam games, check out the Steam controller. I got one (2nd one is a regular xbox wireless) and it has been pretty good. And it can go wired or wireless.

yeah these go on sale quite often so you might want to wait until you see it

What is the point here. What are you "trying to learn" in a GUI?

Jared is correct. Outside of two minutes to learn where the start button is and what the theme looks like, there is no learning of a desktop, any desktop. It's not only not an IT skill, it's not a power user skill, or even an end user skill.

It would be similar to "learning a writing utensil". But pen, pencil, crayon... once you know how to write you don't learn a new one, you just use it.

I was just curious if anyone knew of anything else. Can't know without asking

How would I go about optimizing the GUI in a Fedora 31 VM when I am not compositing through a GPU? Are there standard practices to reduce animations etc within gnome/cinnamon? Currently Windows 10 RDP works incredibly well but trying to load Gnome or Fedora has been much slower.

@scottalanmiller okay, didn't know if that would help with being able to perform faster. What size SSD would be good then?

You can get a 1TB one cheap, then there will be plenty of storage for all the games.

Not really, lol, I mean about the storage. I'm looking at my 1TB ssd and asking myself how the hell I managed to nearly fill it. . .

Goes SO fast with games. When you get games that are 50GB each, it doesn't take many to use a lot of space really quickly.

Think brings me back to my family PC having a 40 GB hard drive and that was a lot in its day

I'm of the opinion that the company should provide users with anything that is required to do their job. In this case, if a mobile device is required for them to do their job then the company should provide the device. If it's not required then it's the users choice.

Lucky. They all left NY long ago.

We have one left in Omaha,

They are all over the place here. I see them everywhere

Once in a while I see one driving across PA, but that's about it.

      a one car garage?

narrow lot. couldn't fit two. we had to apply for a variance for what we have here actually

and you still bought the lot? man, the neighborhood must have something really worthwhile.

I don't understand most east coasters - you're all so cramped together. 😛

This particular town has no room for development and it has an incredible school district. It's also affordable. Checked all of the boxes. Two car garage is nice but its not an absolute requirement

      Building this yourself?

We purchased the plot and found a builder to build on it. I'm not handy at all 😄

Okay got it. I spent many a year making ends meet in both home and commercial construction. Foundation all the way to the roof. Done it all. 🙂

Nice. I've learned a lot through the building process but I'm definitely not there yet. We do have some very nice features in the house like a poured concrete foundation, tankless water heater, manabloc, etc.

This is what the manabloc looks like:

      manabloc.jpg

      Where is the build happening?

Moorestown NJ. Very nice area with great schools

So, shock cold winters but not too sustained winter temperature wise?

Heated concrete floor? The house we live in now has a heated pad in the basement and in the garage. I used to poo poo that but man it's nice to walk downstairs and not get hit by the cold dank feeling that would otherwise be there.

Working on the vehicles is nice too. Warm floor. 😄

I wanted to put in radiant floor heating but it wasn't in the cards unfortunately. The house is a 5 star energy rated home though. we are actually going through the first part of testing in a week or two. The crawl space has this really nice insulation that will be installed though

Haha no. Compared to copper PEX is so easy. I've done soldering I'll stick with compress or crimping anyday.

Yeah this is true based on everything I have read. PEX is also cheaper now

Wish I had one of these in my house. That's how I would have plumbed it if I were to do it all over.

A lot of what I put in was actually due to a conversation we had years ago, so thanks
