You already have a solution, LMI right? so what are you looking for then, something cheaper, something free? If lmi does all you want it to do why did you make the post? If you dont give a shit what others think why did you make the post.

RE: Alternatives to LMI
@Jason
Not sure what you mean ;connect on local network'. It certainly does that. You can also initiate the sessions if you set it up to do so. Unattended might be a problem, since user has to hit Yes to your prompts. But if they are there waiting for your help i dont see that as a problem. If you need to get in when they arent there, you could use Remote Desktop.
Other solutions are going to cost lots of money. -
RE: Alternatives to LMI
Is there something very wrong with Offer Remote Assistance? Ive used it in the past with great success. I think it does all you want, long as who/what youre connecting to is on your domain/forest.

RE: Today i decommissioned an Athlon Xp 2200+ machine I may have built
I installed Win10 last night as i walked out the door. Everything works except the sound card. Ill probably try to get that working today, just because it's Friday before 3 day holyday.

Today i decommissioned an Athlon Xp 2200+ machine I may have built
Built by a local computer shop more than 12 years ago, when i used to work at the same computer shop as sales/fixit guy. I might have made this pc for this company, now I am the sysadmin for them.
Just seems weird.
I might install Win10 on it and see if it is even usable. -
RE: XenServer 7 has launched!
I was exporting from Xencenter. I just shut the vm down and export.
I am talking bout this page
Network 0 is the default. However you have to either manually configure ip or have dhcp setup on your management network for that to work. I just set this to a vlan that i know dishes out dhcp, only for the xfer vm.
I was thinking perhaps you are hitting a bottleneck here if your settings force this go through a router that doesnt do Gb.
I hit about 400mbps (not constantly, but consistently) doing exports this way, during middle of the day. I could test when nobody is around later and hit a bit higher througput. -
RE: XenServer 7 has launched!
@BRRABill Still have 6.5 in production here, but i just exported xoa disk in 5 minutes to a usb disk at my desk. 5min17s for 8GB
I then just exported it to my c:\ which is an ssd
same 8GB, 4m48sWhat are you choosing for the network interface for xfer vm that xen uses?

RE: What is considered 'cheap hw raid' vs 'good hw raid'
The card i have is LSI Sas 9260-4i
http://www.avagotech.com/products/server-storage/raid-controllers/megaraid-sas-9260-4i#specificationsSeems to check Scott's checkboxes. Although it is getting a bit old spec wise it seems, it has not been used to my knowledge.
This supermicro board would be something i might want for home use.
https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10SRL-F.cfm
I dont really know enough about the Intel C612 chipset it has to know if it is good or not. -
What is considered 'cheap hw raid' vs 'good hw raid'
Say you spend a few hundred bucks on a SuperMicro server mobo with built in RAID on the mobo. Is that fakeraid? Is it cheap hw raid you dont want, or is it good enough. What about LSI MegaRaid cards? These are hundreds dollars each. I just happen to have 1 sitting in my desk drawer doing nothing. I think it was bought as a backup for our XS hosts raid cards.

RE: Today is the day from Hell!

So I popped in a new SD Card and installed XS 6.5 again. Went to do updates and decide to just start at the oldest and move my way upward. Well once I reached Sp1 suddenly there was about 35 more - no thanks, don't want to be here forever, already late enough.
Found this link: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX138115
Updated June 14, 2016It shows that you can go Install > Sp1 > update 12 > update 24 > update 27 > update 29 > update 32 > update 33.
Many of the updates are cumulative, do you don't have to install them all from scratch.
Hope this saves someone some time.
This is what i did when upgraded past sp1, just installed about 3 or 4 cumulative updates.
Also, in the future you could save a backup of your XS install with vm/sr info to the local SR, or anywhere else, just in case. It is an option from #xsconsole
I do this before upgrading usually, and keep it there afterwards.
edit: ah wait, i see someone mentioned the xsconsole backups. -

The version I got doesn't seem to support XenServer?
I totally forgot about that. You gotta buy Enterprise to get Xenserver vm backups, and then they are only full backups at the moment.

I suppose USB flash drives could be OK for Off-site. I'd get 5, one for each business day of the week. Then at work (hopefully) you would only loose one day if the current drive failed.
I'm doing grandfather - father - son backups, which is why the cost of them matter. I'll need like 15 just to get started.
@travisdh1 What software are you using?
@Breffni-Potter Site to site is out because that's "online" as far as they are concerned...
That's a tape mentality - do you need to maintain it? With the speed of USB 3 sticks, just do a full backup to a stick every day/night.
I never thought I would do this, but someone has to stand up for the tapes
Tape is cryptolocker proof.
Tape is "oops I brushed past the server and broke the USB stick off" proof
Tape media is really affordable per GB
Tape is designed to work with offsite storage for DR
... other tape goodness that someone else will remind me of I'm sureYou spend half your day waiting for restores.

RE: Using a NAS for backups & Unitrends FREE
Just 1 or 2 things
Unitrends currently wont do incremental backups on Xenserver. All vm backups have to be full backups, all the time unless you use their agent, which will do full/incrmental, System State and File level backups.
Instead of backing up the vms, could you not just export them to xva then import them later?(basically a backup)
I use a NAS for my backups, though i do use iscsi disks and not nfs. -
RE: XenServer 7 has launched!
Yikes. That one does seem to be bugging lots of people. Also nice to see someone else besides us using Jira.
