The key...if you're into functional GPO's (vs. monolithic) is having an effective and meaningful OU structure. Otherwise, half of your time will be creating security filters or specific targeting which can get very confusing very quickly.

The performance impact of processing GPO's in general is negligible, but it does depend on what that GPO is doing (i.e. deploying software in general or printers over slow links? Have a seat and grab a cup of coffee). I would be more concerned if you have slow links at your sites - if this is the case, you need to ensure that you have Sites and Services configured appropriately and a RODC at your remote site to facilitate speedy logins.

Being aware of GPO enforcement (which you should try to avoid) and LSDO ordering will help you tons.

There's really no right or wrong way to deploy GPO's as it is more about what you're doing with them, how they are deploying, and what you're deploying them to.

Personally, my preference is to break my GPO's out to functional objects - i.e. this one is for security, this one is for desktop preferences, this one is for drive mappings, etc.

Good way to think of it. Clean install is a little extra work today in exchange for a "known" or nearly known environment. An in place upgrade means carrying risk with you, maybe a little, but some that might bite you later.

Or maybe the next IT guy, just leave the headaches for him šŸ˜‰

That's the first time anyone ever referred to Latin America as "serious" in business. The work ethic of Latin America, besides the lowest level of worker, is horrible. It was like pulling teeth to get things done in Costa Rica when I was running Vegas Club Room. And then we start mentioning South, especially Brazil, holy f[moderated]!

Costa Rica has a reputation for work issues even in Central America, I would not use that as the standard. I've not seem similar issues in Panama, for example. Nicaragua I am still getting to know.

Agreed. I want a list of what they collect & why & how it's used & who can use it. Then I'll quit sharpening my pitchfork and disperse the mob.

Edit: I may settle for less explanation if they get super specific about what they collect.

      @DustinB3403 said:

      Ah....

Sorry for the confusion then. Do they have the resources to run another WSUS server and proper licensing? It really is quite a simple solution.

PDQ Deply has options for 3rd party app updates etc, but requires annual renewal.

Oh, I can easily setup WSUS on one of their existing VMs. Just not really sure I want to with the size overhead for this many users.

Hey Jared, sorry if I sound a little lost, but what is the overhead you're referring to? You pretty much only have two options: Deploy a WSUS server and use a GPO (or regedit) to make the workstations talk to it, or you can manually install updates once per month (or per quarter). I would think you could easily deploy a very small WSUS server (either on 2008 or 2012) using WID and about a 60-80gb hard drive. You could even make it one of the guest VMs.

When I was supporting Office 2010 and Office 2013, Windows 7 and 8.1 I needed more like 120 GB to hold all of the updates, and monthly had to do the cleanup or I would run out of disk space.

Obviously there will be some variables to consider. I was basing my recommendation off our current WSUS setup (over 200 workstations, and 30 servers) vs his environment (8 desktop, 2 laptops and some unnumbered servers). Up until recently when MS changed the way the update cycle works, I cleaned our db every month and we've been doing completely fine with an 80GB hard drive on the server.

IIRC they have an offline installer you can download from their site. That way you skip the whole buggy deploy client process.

      Hi Scott-
Just found out about this site - thanks for the ioSafe mention. Perfect application btw. The ioSafe 214 now comes with drive options - all new loaded ioSafe NAS products contain WD Red Drives by default and have for several months now. We'll be working on updating the product description in the field over time. Also, all NAS units can be ordered with Enterprise Grade Drives as an option.

Redundant NICs are an option on the 1515+ but not the 214.

      Hope that helps!

For example, thoughts on best way to deploy this to 100 workstations, then remove all of the apps currently not installed through Chocolatey?

Preexisting for about 20 machines and then the rest were fresh installs
