Zabbix can do similar with its default built in templates.

What Zabbix lacks is patch management type stuff. That's a big deal.

Where is Salt falling short for patch management?

Integration. Zabbix and Salt together might handle what is needed.

I'd hate to hear that NTG has to start using a hosted RMM solution.

I do like the "build it ourselves" idea. I like having it all packaged for us, but what are these tools providing other than a pretty package compared to what we can do ourselves? I think you are right that it probably isn't much and doing our own is just way better.

We are using Ninja RMM. Have tried Kaseya, Solarwinds MSP, Continuum, Naverisk and Pluseway. Everyone has its ups and downs; my best advice would be to "try them all and use the least bad of them".
Were about to move from Ninja to to Kaseya thru Techs Together (great people there) but Ninja works and they have been improving the platform.

@dave_c What is the pricing like on NinjaRmm? I went to its site and could not find any public pricing. I probably don't need something like this but I wanted to try something like this out just to see what I was missing/not missing if that makes any sense.

Varies, you have to negotiate. If you look at Reddit, you will find people saying that they pay as low as $1 to as high as $4 per end point depending on their sales person and negotiation tactics.

@jmoore I have to say, having used NinjaRMM and now testing Itarian, I don't think you'd convince me to pay for the difference. Itarian might not be "as nice", but from a profit standpoint, it's going to do much better.

We had looked at Commodo's suite of products and it all seemed to be FOSS stuff stitched together and rebranded (for example, their ticketing system is just OSTicket with custom branding). If that's the case for the RMM you might be able to roll your own if you can see what's under the covers.

You could do something with GLPI and fusioninventory. There isn't much out of the box, but you can build reporting and dashboards, the patching would require creating the packages and managing the deployment but it would be fully FOSS and should be able to scale as big as you want.

And volume. Higher volume better pricing leverage

Of course, volume is part of your negotiating power. that and just knowing what others are paying 😉

No open source RMM of which I know, that appears to be their own custom solution.

@scottalanmiller Ok thanks. I really don't "need" something like this but just wanted to try it and see what I was missing.

Itarian is free. So for that purpose, unbeatable. Even if it isn't the best (and it isn't), it's completely free so you don't just get a 30 day trial or pay for something, you can deploy it at home, or on family machines and "use it" like a business, even if just for two or three machines. That's a great way to get used to having something like it and form a better opinion.

Are there any other MSPs in here? I'm using SolarWinds NCentral. Most of the "free" ones make their money by charging for the add ons. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a RMM, like requirements of your client base and integrations with your PSA. When you're small, you can get by without integrations, but it's tough to scale.

We do both consulting and MSP, I am not classified here as a service provider but we do provide MSP Services.
