    • RE: Why restart works ? Technical reason ?

      @Dashrender @JaredBusch
That sounds reasonable reply, in fact I am doing it by default, I mean not spending much time if it's not very production or repeated issue. Just wanted to know if I am not alone that don't know the reason for some specific issue 🙂

Appreciate if you can elaborate the first query, which is Restart ?

    • Why restart works ? Technical reason ?

      Hello there,

We as IT people used to face so many scenarios in which we take one of the important troubleshooting step, which is Restart, either it can be computer, router etc.

Yes, so many times it works.

Being a technical guy, I would like to know technical reasoning, to be aware of and answer if any user asks.

On other hand, some times I don't know the reason for some specific issue, user just wonder on those issues and asks why it happened, and I don't have answer, is that normal or happens with you ? if so, is that okay ?

      Appreciate you responses !

      Hello all,

I am looking to setup Assets Management system at our office. I already know SnipeIT one, was about to setup.

Few days back, I found Ralph software, just thought to share here, to inform you and get feedback if someone is using. It looks interesting.

It looks like taken some part from SnipeIT.

    • Looking for good and cheaper webhosting, suggest please ?

      Hello all,

We were using Hostgator for hosting, but with this recent renewal, the cost goes very high (around $147/year), so we migrated to iPage (aka Netfirms) and we are not happy with them, even after 3 days our site is not up due to tech issues and they have poor tech support.

So we are looking for cheaper and good shared hosting with following :

      1. Should support Wordpress
      2. Unlimited email accounts
      3. Unlimited domains

Question : I think, with shared hosting I cannot create same username for email ids on different domains ? (lets say [email protected] and [email protected]) so I will require to buy Reseller hosting if I need this ?

      Thanks for suggestions !

      Hello there,

Just wondering to know what Network monitoring software you are using ?

I am looking for one, I just need a simple to setup and simple things to monitor like Up or Not ? with PING sensor or other, which checks the devices for every 5 minutes and alarm somehow. Of course free one 🙂

We have lots of Windows PCs, HP N/W Printers, IP Tel Server, Network devices (AP, router, switches etc.), Servers etc. to be Monitored.

      Thanks !

Hi there, I work on the project sodium and while we don't have absolutely everything that you are looking for we are close and we are still early on and implementing new features/modules very regularly. The project is in early alpha so it does look rough, that being said it does work. We don't have absolutely everything you want yet but a good portion of it is in play already and that which isn't is already on our to do list.

      A. We are free.
      B. We do data collection every 5 minutes and show last check in via collection.
      C. We gather information about what applications are installed, storage is available (and much more) with the intent of implementing alarms eventually.

Note: network devices are on the list but will be down the road a little bit.

If you are interested I'll be happy to talk to you further, just shoot me a message.

Definitely I want to explore it.

By the way, I am seeing some Sodium Help desk things and threads related to it here in ML, and tried to google but couldn't find any information about Sodium, where's the location (website) ?

      sodium.waxquixotic.com

The reason we aren't pushing that hard as of yet is simply due to the fact that it is in alpha. Once we hit a point where all the features are lined up and we've put a little effort into cleaning up the visual side I'm sure that we will put more effort into making it more publicly visible. (We also are planning on changing the name for SEO purposes)

Creating a Company by "Clicking Here" not working for me.

I have filled company name, abbrevation, admin email (means the email I want to register with ?), admin username (means the admin username I want ?)

No action when I clicked Submit and no errors shown.

@kris_k said in What network monitoring s/w you are using ? Can you suggest one for me ?:

Depends on the things you want to monitor and the simplicity. Lots of solutions.
It can be anything as easy to set-up as PRTG (free for up to 100 monitors) or a little bit more (a lot more actually...) involved as nagios.

I was using this, very simple and exactly what I wanted, but today seeing some misinformation (some device was offline, but still showing online), so I may want to reinstall and reconfigure, so just thought to give a try for any new better one.

@openit Sodium would be a decent solution, but it may also be more than you need at the moment. It is undergoing a lot of development, and would be free to get involved with and use/test.

In terms of other solutions something like OpenNMS might work for you.

      Going through OpenNMS screenshots.

An HTML5 based Hyper-V Management platform with VM web-console, similar to Kimchi-Project, but for Hyper-V.

I felt same, as I have used XenServer with XenCenter and went to Hyper-V to have a look, and it's not straight forward, it needs tweaking and bit PowerShell knowledge (which I don't have), still not using Hyper-V because of not easy like XenCenter 🙂

      Have you tried Xen Orchestra?

      For Hyper-V ?

I know for XenServer, there are good options (XenCenter and Xen Orchestra). Here I am talking about Hyper-V with no good options.

Fedora is better for active IT departments that maintain their systems. CentOS is better for companies that deploy and never maintain their systems and just hope for the best 😉

I just wonder your statement here on CentOS, while I have seen you always praise CentOS than Ubuntu. Is that praise just about CentOS vs Ubuntu ?

So your whole interest on Fedora is because it have Latest things and faster development ?

      Hi there,

At least from a decade, wide range of applications/ products have been launched in both Open Source and commercial space like Chats,Forum platforms, ERP, CRM, Assets management, Ticketing system, CMS etc. (I want to exclude OSes, general servers/services like web, dhcp, dns, emails etc.)

And mostly in Open Source part, every organization started with very few peoples, now grown to hundreds.

      1. In your view, what kind of applications/products are missing or require wide development or enhancement ?

      2. If you have team to do so, what application/product you would like to build ?

Fedora ? I don't know exactly but, I always had impression that Fedora is for Desktop kind and CentOS/Redhat/Ubuntu/OpenSuse etc for Server kind of stuff, isn't it ?

I think you are thinking of Korora, the desktop "variant" based on Fedora. You might also have this impression because desktops have almost never favoured LTS releases, whereas servers used to, so people associated anything with a rapid release schedule with desktop users. But Fedora has always been the mainline Red Hat product and RHEL has always been based on a "frozen" version of Fedora.

I am not looking at Fedora from long, but only Live Version to recover something. No idea which version I used, but my impression was not just about Desktop/Server version but overall impression on Fedora. Some other senior guy told me long ago that "Fedora is a testing rat" of Redhat, maybe from then I have this impression.

Fedora can be seen as the test of RHEL in some ways. Because it gets the changes first. But in another perspective, RHEL is just old Fedora that hasn't been updated. In the old days, we used to feel (and there was good reason for it) that updating our operating system regularly was a bad thing. That's changed for a lot of reasons. So the value to RHEL has shifted, a lot. Fedora gets things like PHP 7 as much as six years ahead of CentOS. It gets newer databases, products, updates, features, etc. You get years of new developments that CentOS / RHEL lack. Even a simple LAMP server is dramatically more powerful, stable, and fast on Fedora than on CentOS. If that's what you call testing....

Wow, this information given me lots of clarification.

I feel like some applications or services are designed mainly for one for variants ? (Redhat or Debian) ? as I seen, Odoo was smooth to setup on Ubuntu and can find so many articles for that, and Snipe-IT on CentOS etc. Just wonder why only specific variant is more suitable for most of applications ?

This is very true and is the sole reason that I vary from using Fedora on every server. It's not that one is more suitable, if suitability were the only criteria, I feel that Fedora and Tumbleweed would be the only ones out there. It's that developers choose to build for and test on one OS then port to others, the one that they build and test on works the best for obvious reasons.

Okay, do the developers/owners ever mention on their website that on which build they built the application ? ( to choose that specific variant/build immediately)
