Server down this morning...
VHDX File is just gone... It's missing...
I found out that Windows Defender had detected it was (or had) a virus and quarantined it...

How Windows defender even would ever quarantine a VHDX is beyond me.

That's odd. VHD/VHDX files are NOT ever scanned by the host, unless of course they are mounted in the same way as a disk or USB disk is to the host OS for example. Otherwise, they are treated like a black box. So something else had to have happened for it to be quarantined by the host OS. That doesn't just happen willy-nilly.

Additionally, VM files are automatically excluded when the Hyper-V server role is installed. So again, something isn't configured correctly or something weird is going on.

What happened to you isn't default behavior.

Not sure, we 'inherited' the server. We don't do HYPER-V any longer. Everything is KVM now. (Proxmox)

But it was for sure quarantiined. Funny thing is that Windows defender scan of the actual VM shows no virus... So weird.

My guess would be that the VM's AV cleaned it up separate from the host's AV killing the VM.

Turned out to be a SIP port issue. I remember when I set this particular site up I ended up using port 5160 instead of 5060 but when I configured the new IP group in the skyetel portal I didn't change to the correct port. Once I made that change the portal now shows the new interface as healthy.

Disregard. I went with a manual install and was able to change the path quite easily. Downloading/syncing all my stuff from Backblaze B2 now!

Snap is good for normal desktop apps, not good for servers.

That's not what is being reported. The thing being discussed is violating the contract between the client and the vendor, for which @CCWTech is a legal representative. This is a business partner relationship and not reporting it would be a violation of the partnership.

Think of it like if you and a friend opened a cafe together. You own 90%, your partner owns 10%. A thief steals from you but only your partner witnesses it. They steal enough to qualify as grand theft (this isn't a petty situation like a candy bar or a coffee, this is more like someone stealing the espresso machine) and your partner knows about it. Would you be okay with your partner not telling you and not informing the accountants to write off the loss? Of course not, he'd be helping steal if he did. He has a business responsibility legally and ethically. You don't have to prosecute the thief if you decide not to, but you have a legal right to know that it happened and your accounting team needs that information for tax reasons and other data analytics.

@scottalanmiller Apologies for lack of response, I simply haven't had the time to respond during the day lately, and I forget to check this site when I get home.

This issue has thankfully been resolved since posting. The MSP that installed this stuff was able to submit a ticket to Cisco, and the problem was resolved within 2 hours of doing so. This specific issue shouldn't happen again for a while since the certificates are good for 3 years I believe.

I appreciate your input though, as I have been seriously wondering if we might be better off getting rid of all the Cisco stuff that the MSP installed. Unfortunately, it seems like Cisco was their brand of choice: switches, routers, wireless APs, ASA firewalls, AnyConnect for VPN. I believe there is even an old Cisco UCS server at one location; thankfully, it looks like it is currently only used as a shelf for a Synology NAS stacked on top of a tower server laying on its side.

I believe this SD-WAN was put in place under the facade of being easier to manage and more reliable, which is the opposite of what I have experienced so far. Would it not be easier / simpler to use standard IPsec tunnels configured through functionality that exists in pretty much every decent router available today? Similarly, wouldn't it be easier / simpler to use something like Wireguard or OpenVPN instead of AnyConnect?

I'm not a fan of Cisco myself, and used to use EdgeRouter, EdgeSwitch, and UniFi hardware prior to us being acquired and "upgraded" to Cisco hardware. It was cheap, easy to manage, and reliable enough for our needs. I would love to go this route again, or use a similar brand, but I'm not sure the owners and upper management would even consider it since what we have now "works".

It should be worth $40 and my guess for the higher price is economics. It was built well and keep on chugging along. It seems they are continually in demand for a basic pc that needs just a web browser or to act as a kiosk.

Yes, but you can get brand new with much more performance for that price. Why get something that is a decade old, AND used when new and new is possible? Much less flexible. And can that unit even run current Windows?

Because it keeps chugging along and fulfilling the purpose it was intended. If @stacksofplates doesn't have to do anything to it for 2-3 years other than updates and/or deal with any issues @Dashrender is having, then it could be worth the money.

It seems, based on this thread, the issues @Dashrender is having with the more powerfull/lower cost Beelinks are becoming more expensive than if he just paid $550 for a Dell Optiplex 5070 micro. I cannot be sure as only @Dashrender knows the true cost and if the Beelink's are working out better.

I like products that fulfill the purpose and require less maintenance. If that is Beelink or a new $1200 OptiPlex 5090 micro, count me in.

I guess it comes down to the old axiom, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get!"

Gotta remember that we've all had Dell, HP and others be dead on arrival, too. Even in large batches. Anyone remember all those Dell laptops with bad capacitors that they shipped out? I ran the teams that had to go to client sites to replace them (I ran Dell support organizations.) The difference, for sure, was with Dell the customers had purchased long, extensive warranties and everything was on Dell to replace (and they did, normally.)

But you really have to compare bigger scope. That this is his first try with Beelink is concerning, for sure. It's not a good sign. And only a 30 day "warranty" is worrisome, too. It's good for me, because we often ship to places where warranties aren't honored anyway so paying for one is a loss.

But every vendor has issues, from time to time. So you have to be careful with extrapolating a lot of decision from a single datum.

I don't think that you can do workdrive backups in general as it is not file based and you don't have database access.

VSS is supported on 32-bit Windows XP operating systems and on 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 2003 and later operating systems, including Windows Vista.

By default, all SQL Anywhere databases can use the VSS service for backups if the SQL Anywhere VSS writer (dbvss12.exe) is running. You can use VSS without the SQL Anywhere VSS writer to back up databases. However, you might need to use the full SQL Anywhere recovery procedures to restore those databases. To prevent a database server from participating in the VSS service, include -vss- when starting the database server. Alternatively, you can use the Service utility (dbsvc) for Windows to specify when the VSS service is started.

How VSS works with SQL Anywhere:

Your backup application sends a command to VSS to take a snapshot.

VSS issues an identify command to the SQL Anywhere VSS writer (dbvss12.exe).

VSS issues a prepare to snapshot command to suspend all transactions and write all modified pages to disk on all databases on all database servers. If transactions are not suspended on a database within 10 seconds, the snapshot might contain uncommitted transactions and full recovery may be necessary.

VSS issues a freeze command to checkpoint and then suspend all activity on all databases on all database servers. Each SQL Anywhere database server waits a maximum of 60 seconds for all databases to suspend all activity. Typically, this process takes a few seconds.

VSS issues a thaw command to the SQL Anywhere VSS writer to resume all transactions on all databases on all database servers.

In rare circumstances, SQL Anywhere might be unable to suspend transactions or complete a checkpoint within the maximum time allowed by VSS. If this occurs, you must use the transaction log file and the full recovery process to recover the backed up database.

We use StorageCraft ShadowProtect with ImageManager to take hourly incrementals of our clients server volumes. Never had any issues.

That's true when you have SQL Anywhere running as a service. But when embedded, there is nowhere for the VSS to link against. Are you sure that this process will work with EagleSoft and their implementation of SQL Anywhere? I know that a full blown SQL Anywhere can do it. But that's not the issue here.

Has Microsoft changed how they handle TRIM yet? I know years ago they only ran TRIM when defrag was run. Why? Because Microsoft is still that bad at managing storage.

The normal situation between two residential computers is that a direct connection is never possible because they're both behind NAT or CGNAT.

A direct connection is only possible if you're willing and able to do port forward on either side.

Syncthing has relay enabled by default, yes, but it does not route traffic through it by default.

When you launch syncthing it uses their public STUN server to resolve your local info.

Then when you try to connect from a remote, it uses that connection first. It only relays if that listener has closed.

OneDrive does let you edit files directly, in the storage.

How were you able to bring up the editor? Did you just click on file name? When I do that on a url link file it just takes me to the file that the link is pointing to. I can then edit that target file. In my case it brings up an image editor since the target is a .png file. I can't seem to find a way to edit the text of the url link file itself without downloading it first.

I just clicked on the file.

However, if you really think about it, you want exactly the behavior you are seeing. Imagine if clicking on the .url file it brought up the editor for users instead of taking them to the pointer file?

That said, can you right-click on it in the browser and open it in text editor? If not, then I guess you'll just have to do it on your computer.
