      {"Hello World"},

Thanks for the warm welcome ...

I'm part of a small IT solutions company, which I co-founded .. We provide end-to-end IT solutions to small businesses and start-ups ..The breadth of knowledge and experience, I've gained over the last 18 years, makes me a something akin to a Swiss Knife of the IT field ... That's just a better way of saying - "Jack Of All Trades" ... 😛

Anyway, I still like a noob every now n then ... So, looking forward to learning and informing ..

Also, I would not discount a candidate just cause she/he does not have a home lab.. I typically hire someone based on their, attitude,

That's a key point that I think that a lab gauges, attitude. It shows that someone is really dedicated.

umm.... well ... I kind of agree, and disagree ... Yes, attitude matters the most ... But, what if a person has the right attitude, but does not have resources ? I know so many deserving professionals, who don't have access to resources, simply because they just can't afford, lack the space, etc ... I've been there ... When I was starting off, I couldn't even afford a desktop ...

Most IT pros I know of, who have some really fancy knowledge and/or certifications , do so on the company's dime .... They learn and practice, at the office ... That's precisely, why we have a lab @ the office - Work as a team, learn as a team, share the knowledge, bounce ideas, off each other... We prefer that our team-mates, learn and practice @ the office... We encourage this, and provide the resources (whatever we can afford).. .

A home lab is something nice to have , but it's not a must have ...

I work 24/7. I may only average 6 to 8 hours per day and 42 hours per week. But those hours are spread out over all 24 hours of the day and all 7 days of the week.
Any employee of ours will be expected to do the same.

In return what can an employee expect from the organization ?

I recently visited the website of FOSS based solution called Controltier, that I used to follow, years ago .. Unfortunately, Controltier is no longer active. What I found instead, was a link to RunDeck ... I've not tried it as yet, but just thought I'd share it here..

@tonyshowoff said in First Thing Tasted?:

I don't know of any of the gurus or anyone involved in the long hunger strikes or religious fasts that go on for decades that aren't just frauds. Plenty of them have been found to be cheating on hidden camera and so forth. There's just some things the human body is incapable of. I usually use Bobby Sands as a measuring tool, if it was longer than that I'm sceptical, but if it's longer than the morbidly obese guy who drink nothing but water and took vitamins for 1 year for the BBC or Channel 4 years ago, then I pretty much say: it's a lie, they're full of it.

16 years? Yeah right. Not only that, like @RojoLoco said, it was a waste, the goal wasn't even accomplished, so why is this failure even talked about?

My honest guess is, she just got tired of hiding her food eating and lying about it, maybe she wants to go out to eat at restaurants or something,.

This is the real deal, m8 ... btw ... just because she's ended her fast, does not mean that she has stopped fighting against AFSPA (Armed Force Special Powers Act) .. AFPSA was introduced by the Indian Govt. to give the Army, so called "Special Powers" in certain areas termed as "Disturbed"... AFSPA gives anyone from the the armed forces, right such as

"After giving due warning, an officer is allowed to open fire or use other kinds of force even if it causes death."

"To arrest anyone without warrant who has committed cognizable offences or is reasonably suspected of having done so. "

"Army officers have legal immunity for their actions. There can be no prosecution, suit or any other legal proceeding against anyone acting under AFSPA."

"This draconian law is widely misused by the armed forces .. There have been numerous instances where innocent civilians have been killed, arrested & tortured, and woman raped... "

What Irom will now do is fight as being part of the system, rather than fro the outside ..

    • RE: Simplest VDI

Yep, implemented the same, for a majority of our clients... it's quick n easy to deploy, and manage .. This, along with Thin-clients, has been a winning combo for us .. . works like a charm every time ..

Going a bit off-topic - Earlier, this year , we were contacted by a vendor, pushing these really really dirt cheap China-made thin-clients (They go by the name Thnder-X) ... So, for $18 a pop (only if you buy a minimum of 50 Units), it offers : -

      Arm Cortex 1.8ghz CPU
      1GB RAM
      512MB on-board Flash
      100/1000 Network Port
      3 USB ports (2xUSB 2.0, 1x USB 3)
1 HDMI Port + 1 VGA Port support upto 1920x1080 / 32 bit colour depth / Dual Display
      Audio Port.
      7.5W Power consumption
      Windows CE

We were rather skeptical at first, so the vendor gave us a unit to demo ... We're using it on a daily basis for around a month.. Worked well for most basic office tasks (Documents, Spreadsheets, Emails, Browsing, Accounting etc) ... Videos didn't do too well, but still, not as bad as we were expecting ..

The only catch is that it comes with a 6 month replacement warranty...

We bought around 10 units, and gifted 4 to a client ... at $18/unit, I don't mind gifting these to 20 MangoLassi users ... you pay for your own shipping ... hehehe

Anyway, the client has been using these in a production environment (on the above setup), for over 6 months, and they've been pretty happy with it, so far ..

      @scottalanmiller

This is precisely what we were discussing in the "Starting own IT consultancy .." thread ...

This kind of crap happens all the time ..

I recollect an instance, when a vendor went as far as to insist that the compute-name of the Server be a specific one (I think it was the name of their product), or ELSE, the application would not work properly .... Luckily, this was one of the rare occasions when the client backed us, instead of the vendor... I put my sparring gloves on, and TKO'ed the vendor.

Hi (After a really really long time)...

Just finished watching GoT Season 7, which in my opinion is one of the most poorly written and directed season of GoT. I just hope this show, does not end like the way Dexter (not the animated series) did....bad...bad...

Watching reruns of Modern Family, Top Gear (The original ones) on Kodi

Watching (and following) talks by Prof. Richard Wolff (Democracy @ Work), on Youtube

      Various speakers on TED/TEDx

Also, starting following this really outrageous, weird Comedy reality show, since Jan 2017... It's called the Trump Administration... However, I hear rumours, that it may just get canceled...

For 20 users or so, I'd stick with an all-in-one box (UTM) ... Sophos, Sonicwall, pfsense ... all would work, just as well

We've had bad luck with SonicWall. Unrealible, breaks things, hard to manage. If you are considering SonicWall, get Sophos instead.

Over here, Sophos technical support sucks bigtime ... same issue with WatchGuard ...

Infact, years back, we pushed a lot of Watchguard UTMs .. When Watchguard started-off, the support was pretty decent .. Over time, it just went to the dogs , which is when we shifted to Sonicwall (this was before Sophos made an entry) ...We've faced very few issues with Sonicwall, and whenever we did, the tech support was always great ...

We deployed quite a Sophos appliances (SG series mostly), in the recent past, and we did face quite a few issues , but thats okay ... What is NOT okay, is the lackluster support ... Terrible !! One of the worst support, I've seen in recent times .. It's rather unfortunate, when a good product is marred by poor support ...

I understand that there are many pieces to a UTM. That is why I am asking what, specifically, SAM considers the good stuff? The good stuff could mean brand, technology type or both.

Juniper, WatchGuard, Checkpoint are usually considered the top contenders in UTM market...

but be prepared say a Junpier SRX5600 base model starts at $30,000.

Some of the check point models start at $150,000.

Watchguard is on the lowerend and I think their most expensive unit is only $50,000.

I've used/deployed quite a few(This was years ago) Whatchguard appliances, and I really hated the interface and more so, the support .. Wouldn't rate them as "Top Contender" ... Checkpoint & Juniper - Yes ...But, these are for Enterprise level ...

For 20 users or so, I'd stick with an all-in-one box (UTM) ... Sophos, Sonicwall, pfsense ... all would work, just as well

Say, anyone heard of worked with Crossbeam, in the past ... ? I don't think the brand/company exists anymore ... but just wondering ..

Where control is key this fits like a glove...

Exactly. And it's not just control over what people can access, it's also protecting them from outside bad actors, knowing where attacks come from, etc. There are lots of good points to it, not just questionable ones. And, thus far, I've not heard that they are removing the old Internet, just offering a new one.

Yep, there's a lot of crap, out there on the internet, and if you want to keep that away, then it's a good option .. But ofcourse, there's a flip-side to this, as pointed above
