Reinstalling the OS from generic media is my personal preference for any new computer. Get rid of the crap the OEMs bake in.

The only time this didn't work well for me was Vista pre SP1. The OEMs seem to be able to get the machines to run OK, but damn, once you blew their install away and installed from generic media and then installed the OEM's drivers - it was never as good.

But outside of Vista pre SP1 - I've never had an issue doing this.

@scottalanmiller Oh, I know and understand that.

I'm also not sure if the Fair Use would cover those under the teaching, scholarship, or research exemptions.

No, it's very obliously a company site for someone who sells products. This is not fair use.

How did you determine that they sold something? I was under the impression that it was like a botanical guide offered freely online. I guess I just read into that, though.

No, they just have a glossary section to help sell products, really still part of the sales.

Which is why I'm probably going to be getting the lawyer involved. It's outside my area of expertise now. Yes, we do sell products on the website, yet the pages they reference are information/education only.

Since I set up my PBX, I have pretty much had zero calls hit my phone. It's worth it just for that.

The staff just hands out anyone's name and transfer like mad.. no matter how many times I ask them not to.

That is the job of Management/HR not you.

Well - in that case, the management doesn't care - so I guess I'll always just be getting the crap calls.

Start forwarding them to 214-666-4321, and hit mute, so you can listen in on what goes down 😈

lol - that would be funny.

I haven't dealt with anything large at all, so I guess I haven't seen that. I didn't realize it was that bad when you had much larger systems.

If you are on SSD everywhere, might not be so bad. But at the bank, for example, going through logs was painful. Took up a ton of memory while loaded, certain tools could not be used to open the files, long load times, very long scroll times, slow searching, etc. When you have 10GB of text in a single file, things slow down. 🙂

Yes, that would work well. Also checking in the same version should not trigger a new version to be created. So the encryption malware would need to alter the file in addition to encrypting it each time or else it would fail even with the incrementing numbers.
