    • Stupid Simple Trick with "ls"

I have three different shares that mount into three different folders in /media.. To confirm they had mounted correctly, I will list the contents of each subdirectory to make sure I see files. Well, before I did the following:

      cd /media
      cd goflex_dallas/
      ls
      cd ..
      cd goflex_landcare/
      ls
      cd ..
      cd readyshare_wd4tb/
      ls
      cd ..

However, I decided to try something new and now I can get all the info I need from one command:

      cd /media
      ls goflex_* readyshare_wd4tb/

      It outputs as the following:

      goflex_dallas:
Data Dump Flash Games Reformat Prep Transfers
Data Dump (Maintained) Gaming Temp treeinfo.wc

      goflex_landcare:
Data Backup (Maintained) Misc Keep StorageCraft Backups Temp Universal_Updater.exe

      readyshare_wd4tb/:
Data Dump (Maintained) netgear_downloader StorageCraft Backups
      Extras $RECYCLE.BIN System Volume Information

It's a stupid simple trick but I thought I'd share!

      Thanks,

    • New Opportunities are Always Exciting!

So I posted this a couple weeks ago... http://mangolassi.it/topic/3138/followed-by-a-non-recruiter-or-headhunter

Anyways, on Friday I had my second interview, which was an in-person interview with the CEO and my main contact. It went quite well and I was excited, except they talked about me doing a rolling 4-day on/4-day off schedule. It would be 4x12 hour days from 10a-10p. Now, that sounds like an awesome schedule, except that I have a few things I do each week that that would interfere with, making that not doable for me. Well, I talked to my mentor, @scottalanmiller , and he suggested asking them if we could put the job "on hold". I told them I really liked the opportunity but would not be able to make that schedule work. They were going to be hiring for a more normal shift down the road, but this is what they needed now.

Well, I got an email back from my contact and was asked to call him. So when I took lunch today, I called him and was expecting either a "well, sorry we couldn't make this work" or "we might be able to hold off for now". Instead, he simply asked if I had any other positions I was looking at, which was a no (because he wanted to make sure someone else didn't get me this time because he wasn't "in time"...his words) and asked how interested I was in the position. I told him very. We talked about the other shifts that they were going to be looking for, which is M-F, 7a-4p and 11a-8p. I tell him the 7-4 would be better for me. Well, he tells me he wants to talk to a couple of the guys internal to him and he'll get back to me.

About 4 hours later, I get an email that what they can do is have me work a flip-flop between the 7-4 and 11-8 with two weeks at each, back and forth. He said they know I have stuff going on in the evening one night a week, so that one night, when I'm working the 11-8, I can get off at 7 so that I can do what I need to. He asked if this was doable. I was blown away! This company really seemed to be going out of their way to make things work for me, even adjusting their hiring plan so that they could get me right away. I told him to draw up the paperwork and that I'd put in my notice tomorrow. I sent an email to the recruiting agency already telling them my last day will be Friday, December 12th. I start December 15th at nDivision.

In my second interview, it was mentioned how my contact had seen my writing on www.thanksaj.com and how prolific I am in online social media, and the CEO is very intrigued at having me do some work on things like their Facebook page. Overall, I'm EXTREMELY EXCITED to see what this new opportunity has to bring and what I'll be able to learn from all this. They mentioned how they love to have their employees complete Dell certification training and get certified. I've always been an HP fan but maybe Dell will start to grow on me...right @NetworkNerd? 😛

      Anyways, thanks guys!

    • Consulting for a Small Construction Company

So a friend of mine who I worked with in retail some years ago is now working at the executive level of his father's construction company. He's working to bring them into the 21st century. Three years ago, they all had flip phones. Now, they all have smart phones.

He's looking to get the company their first server, and I've been asked to consult on it. I was thinking @xByteSean or @BradfromxByte might be able to help with recommendations.

What it will be used for:

      1. Want it to be virtualized (obviously), and debating about what hypervisor to use (pretty sure Hyper-V would be cheaper but I need some advice on this)
      2. Going to need a license for Windows Server (2012 R2 Standard should work, or whatever it might be called now). That will act as their DC, file server, possibly print server and also might be used for their camera system.
      3. RAID 10 (again, obviously) with at least 2TB drives (4TB of storage should be plenty for them)
      4. Want to setup a UEB (forget what it's called now) for backup

As far as specs, I don't think they need anything super crazy, but we are looking for a rackmount server (also need suggestions for a decent rack, as they don't have one yet). I want to get them something that isn't over the top, but also gives them sufficient room to grow.

      Some questions I have:

      1. Would a secondary DC make sense? There are only seven computers in this entire environment right now. So while having a secondary, as a rule, is always advised, it'd be another Windows license, and could we get away without it?
      2. As much as I want to keep costs down, I also am not entirely comfortable having their one server be a single point of failure. Would it be better to use two VMs, one as the DC, and maybe the print server, and use a separate VM for the file server?

      Other info:

All PCs are running either Windows 7 Pro SP1. They do have a couple XP machines still in use that I was thinking we could P2V (they have expensive, licensed software on those machines, so that's why). @scottalanmiller , if I did this, would licensing be an issue if the server has multiple processors? I know you've talked about this before but I can't remember if it was only if it had more than two processors.

Anything else I might have missed or not mentioned, just ask!

      Thanks!

    • Can't Revert to Normal Startup - MSCONFIG

I have a really weird issue.

I shut down a bunch of stuff on my work machine in MSCONFIG. I then proceeded to run over 200 updates on the machine. Well, I realized a few of the things I shut down are more needed than I realized, so I went to re-enable them. However, I am finding myself unable to...

I open MSCONFIG from the cmd prompt (run as admin) and try to select Normal Startup, but when I hit apply, it just reverts to selective startup. I try enabling all on the startup screen, but it does the same thing. I thought about rolling back but in all their infinite wisdom, system restore was either turned off, or never turned on.

Windows 7 Enterprise x86 (don't ask me why...)
      McAfee VSE, DLP and HIP

I've tried using Autoruns but it doesn't show anything besides a couple of Office plugins as disabled. I am feeling like I'm out of options...thoughts?

The level of stupid is becoming to much.

It's sad because that kind of thing used to be embraced, but now they are so freaking paranoid about if someone is posting who is supposed to be a GG and isn't, and so they create blanket policies that break how the community functioned for years. A huge part of that is why ML was created in the first place! 😄

    • RE: ThanksAJ Having a Tough Morning

You know, I will say this:

It was my mistake. I was careless, and I own that. This is going to make a lot of things very difficult for me in the interim. However, I'm not feeling like I can't move, or that I'm overwhelmed. I've grown so much this year. I have the confidence now to know that I will do what I must to make things work. If that means riding a bike each morning to FedEx, well, I'll get some extra exercise and maybe lose more weight. I can get rides to my day job. My new apartment is five minutes from my girlfriend, and I can catch a ride with her (we work the same shift). I know I will make things work, and I'm not giving up. It's one more thing on my plate that was already full, but you know what? When I look back on the past couple years in a decade or two, I will be able to say that I fought the fight and won. I did what I had to so I could survive and get to where I want to go. I'm down, but I'm not out, and I'm not giving up. And it makes me proud of myself to be able to say that, and know it's true.

Just keep holding on to that. You need to do that for a long time. It only takes one bad moment of thinking it is your monkeys for it to fall apart. Stay relaxed, head down, do a good job and you should be good.

That's exactly what I've been doing. I think back to situations I've encountered in previous jobs where I made certain mistakes, overstepped bounds, etc. I made those mistakes too many times. And when I came here, I swore I wouldn't do that anymore. So far, I've done excellent with it. I haven't been perfect, but pretty damn close, and it's working for me. I'm not an easy case, but for all those that have invested their time, energy, money and support in me, I'll be damned if I don't make them proud of their decision.
