A systems person: works on operating systems, specifically servers. Specialties within systems would be Windows, Linux, Solaris, AIX, FreeBSD, etc.

A network person: works on networking gear like routings and switches. Specialties within networking would be Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, etc.

An admin: runs operational systems. They manage the live running systems. They are focused on availability and need an operational mindset.

An engineer: designs and builds systems for operations. They don't manage running systems but provide them to admins. They are focused on productivity and need a design mindset.

Unless you work for a consulting company like I do and they give you a big title and make you do a bunch of everything lol.

I've seen Graphana doing one second on huge environments with tons of sensors.

Never heard of Graphana. Will have to check it out. Only thing I've seen that does 1 second intervals (Other than custom scripted stuff) is Flowalyzer but only used that for troubleshooting not long term graphing.

Zabbix is like Cacti.... Only better! lol. I actually started with Cacti at my last job when I was only monitoring the Network switches. Then I started using Zabbix to monitor the Servers, and then Zabbix added in SNMP stuff for network devices, and I haven't been back to Cacti since.

Once I get my Zabbix server up and running again, I'll get a demo of it set up so you guys can see some live data. 8-)

I fell in love with Cacti because of the 10 second polling intervals and spine multi-threaded polling. Can Zabbix do the same? Think I tried getting 10 second polling intervals with Zabbix a while back and had trouble figuring it out.

It should be able to. It has a few places where you can set the timers for it. But 10 seconds... Yeowch. That's a ton of data, lol.

IIRC Cacti only stores the data in the RRD files, right?

Yea RRD files. I usually do 10 second intervals and store it for a month. Usually ends up being 80MB per graph.

@Minion-Queen Sticky-Lips BBQ is also an AWESOME BBQ joint.

I give Sticky Lips a slight edge on side dishes compared to Dinosaur but I think the meat is better at Dinosaur. Have had dry brisket at Sticky Lips. I've only been to the newer Sticky Lips in Henrietta not the original in the city.

Throw "Senior" somewhere in the title or a higher number like IT Specialist 2 to show some seniority. Always looks good on a resume.

I always feel like numbers make them look lower. I'm used to five level scales. So 2 is like junior, 1 is entry level or intern, 3 is mid, 4 is senior, etc. Number seem REALLY weird to have on a CV as they mean nothing specific.

Senior is good. Or lead. Or principal.

I haven't heard of too many places with five level scales. We have engineer 1 & 2 then architect. I think Dice lists out 3 or 4 levels but never seen 5.

Most of our meals will be at the Hotel and let me tell you the food is good. Even the Gluten Free is good! The Chef and I are working on the menu to include lots of Mango goodness 🙂 There will be some time to explore some awesome places to eat.

There will be of course a trip down the road to Nick Tahou's (sorry due to the amount of people flying in getting to Steve T's would be expensive).

Dinosaur BBQ is walking distance from there. There isn't really anything in Rochester that has better BBQ. Worth the walk from the hotel.

    • RE: Training Sessions

I'm a network engineer from Ronco Communications. We're one of the largest Aerohive partners in the world. I'm our senior Aerohive engineer...multiple 500+ enterprise AP deployments in several different states. I train our engineers and sales engineers on the product. Could do a presentation and talk about the product and interesting projects I've worked on. Can also give discussion on wireless fundamentals (Roaming, explain MCS data rate charts, etc).

Ronco is also very strong in Cisco UC, Avaya networking and VoIP, and Microsoft Lync/Skype for Business. Can ask around and see if any of our technical people want to be involved. It's too bad our Microsoft Lync Master moved to Philly. He probably would've come. He's 1 of 22 Microsoft Certified Solutions Masters in the world.

@coliver That's easy... Do one on Zabbix. 🙂

That matches what we use here. So if we were to do only one, that would be my vote.

Would love to learn more about Zabbix. I do alot with Cacti and see some overlap but never sunk my teeth into Zabbix as much as I want to.

Wooohoooo no hotel for me I live in Rochester!

      Restaurants/Eateries that are very good:

      Dinosaur BBQ
The Owl House (Vegan/Vegetarian but the best American cheeseburger I've ever had...crazy)
Thali of India (Hit the lunch buffet it will rock your world)
The Gate House (DO NOT GET THE WINGS but everything else is amazing)
      Dibella's subs
      Delmonico's Italian
      Aladdin's
      Sinbad's (Greek/Mediterranean)
      Napa Wood Fired Pizzeria
      Highland Park Diner
      Sticky Lips (BBQ)
      Olives (Greek/Mediterranean)
      Hogan's Hideaway
      Trata
Steve T's (Screw Nick Tahou's lol)
      Jeremiah's (Wings - Bumblebee sauce)
Jines (For the area and atmosphere. Food is decent)

Places NOT to go that will be on "Top Google Lists":

Rooney's (My girlfriend was a chef there and their kitchen is nasty. New owners aren't good. Friend of mine got sick there)
Fiamma (Arrogant bastards wouldn't put extra cheese on a pizza because they wanted to protect their "recipe". Said we could get it on the side. WHO PUT'S CHEESE ON THE SIDE OF A PIZZA?!)
D'Mangu (Some of their food was old and tasted sour)

Both. Apples and oranges comparison.... FG is random, cut scene humor, while SP is sharp social satire. <-- don't try to refute this statement until you have watched ALL of the newest season of SP.... and if it offends you, we can't be friends. It's a beautiful treatise on the current state of the US, in terms of everyone being overly sensitive and super offendable. Seth MacFarlane writes great, crass, random humor, but Trey and Matt provide the sharpest satire on tv.

It's mind boggling to me that Trey and Matt write an episode in a week.

Family Guy. SP is okay but it doesn't draw me in. I can't figure out why I love one and find the other mostly boring. I love SP the Movie and think the creators are brilliant and find it hilarious from time to time, but mostly I don't find it interesting. FG I love every single time. They are both rude, crass, political, social, have the same underlying motivations, have intelligent but gross humour, etc. So I have never figured out, other than the artwork, why I like one and not the other generally.

It almost comes down to Stewie vs. Cartman lol

@dafyre Really? I just paid about 60 bucks for annual maintenance. Seems to be cheaper than the pro version of mobaxterm.

Haven't looked at the pro version but what do you get extra that's useful?

No annual renewal for the MobaXTerm. Just renewals for major version upgrades.

For Free vs Pro see : http://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/download.html

I bought MobaXterm before I'd heard about RoyalTS. That's another one that looks pretty good.

      RoyalTS looks pretty good too.

Wow this thing does look pretty awesome. I gotta give it a try. Huge 100MB+ download for a management tool. Must be a ton of features in it.
