There's mention of a tftp recovery option in the link below:

Don't know if it still applies but might be worth trying.

I was looking at similar posts. I think I will look into the USB-TTL device.

Some posts mention 3.3v and other mention +5v - Something tells me it matter but I am dumb in these matters.

wait - what? there's voltage concerns on a USB to terminal connection? Can't say I've ever seen that.

The ER-X doesn't have a console port so you have to open it up, use a USB-TTL to connect to the serial port PINs on the board.

It probably is bricked. The same happened to my ER-X when firmware 2 came out. I got it booted eventually over serial cable, and if I remember correctly it displayed something about internal storage.

I noticed others have had the same issue in the past.

I just saw the serial connection setup. Did you just use the USB-TTL device to connect?

The part that bugs me is I had check the storage issue prior to upgrade. Had 58% free so I figured I would be ok.

yeah, that's not much when the firmware is 70 MB compressed.

I definitely know that now. lol If that is what did it. The other reports I read, before I did anything, user mentioned <40%. I decided to give it a shot. Oh well.

Bought a cheap D-link at Microcenter yesterday to get us going. Glad I did as we are locked down with snow this morning in NE Ohio.

@pmoncho I don't think it's bricked, but I seem to recall problems when going from the 1 series to 2... IIRC part of the problem might be that the button inside that pinhole for the paperclip reset is a bugger to actually hit and hold... I can't say with 100% certainty whether it was the ER-X or one of my dd-wrt projects that I ended up having to hold the paperclip / pinhole reset for something crazy like 5 minutes for things to play nice.

Thanks. I will try that today. I must have done that reset button 30+ times so far but will give it a try.

    • RE: ER-X firmware Upgrade

Tried to update this afternoon and it all went south.
      ER-x = 10.10.2.1

Rebooted ER-x first, confirmed all was well (I was updating my PC also), connected to ER-X GUI, Downloaded backup and uploaded 2.0.9 Hotifx 2.

It sat there and spun (GUI uploading file) for about 30 minutes and figure something went south.

Lost connection to GUI, could not ping, timed out trying to get to GUI. Seemed I had no choice but to unplug POE (using POE injector) and tried to reboot. No luck.

ETH0 (WAN) port, ETH2 (Netgear Switch) and ETH4 POE (UAP Lite) were lit.
I had no Internet but I could ping the Netgear switch and UAP Lite and DHCP is no longer working.

I then decided to try the Reset button but that is not working either. While ERX is on, used paperclip, held for 20+ seconds, no change, eth4 light did not blink or become solid and router did not reboot.

Unplug ERX, press Reset while plugging in POE, ETH4 would blink but the router would not reboot after that.

I could not ping either 192.168.1.1 or 10.10.2.1 and setting my IP to 10.10.2.88/192.168.1.5 if I was plugged into any ETH port or LAN port on POE injector.

      Anybody else run into this?
      Is the ER-X "Bricked?"

I went out and bought a cheap D-link to get me through as the wife needs to WFH. I will play with the ER-x tomorrow at work if anyone has any ideas.

Just realized that I am still on 1.10.11 at home.

Can I go directly to v2.0.9-hotfix.2? Are the hotfix's cumulative?

I didn't see anything in the release notes but figured I would check.

I am enjoying playing a game, named Zelda using this SNES emulator (RetroArch). After a long time, I get a chance to play this fabulous game. Just fascinated! 😳

Ahhh Legend of Zelda. Didn't do much else for an entire 6 months when I was 15. Only time I wasn't playing was during sleep, school or yelled at by my father when he wanted to watch TV. So many late Friday and Saturday nights.

      Enjoy.

One of the twins has it for the NSwitch - he's played through it about eight times now.....

Very nice! Did they move on to the other versions also? Are the other version available for the NSwitch?

Hell, I still have a few clients from my days of business ownership (technically I am still a business owner 😉 ). and I've even picked up an extra one or three over the years without trying.
The extra 5-30K/yr is nice 😉

How does your current company deal with the "moonlighting" situation?
Just wondering to what extent they care.

Rarely does anyone care unless there is competition. He doesn't work for an IT firm.

I see. I'm in medical also, but we have a side where we will help our clients with their IT. External IT (aka bench tech) work is rare now but it still kind of exists.

uh - what? you're in medical and the business you work for has a side department that helps patients? with home computer issues? that just seems beyond weird!

we definitely don't have anything like that.

The closest I get is - I have to work with patients sometimes to get access to our EMR patient portal. But there is a point where we draw the line and say - I'm sorry we can't help you any further, and you need to seek professional computer assistance to solve your computer issues that are preventing you from accessing our website.

Not patients, but small Dr.'s offices who choose not to hire IT companies and have their children do it because they setup their home wifi (big UGH's half the time).

While pc/server/internet setup service is very rare now, we have basically stopped charging for some of the work I do for them. The bummer is, I could charge them $75 per hour with 3 hour setup for small offices and then run services on top of that for a good side hustle.

Edit: Like you telling patients, we do mention that to our clients if they want total complete setup, maintenance and support for free. That is when I mention the $150 an hour plus mileage. That conversation shuts down real fast.

It seems crazy that your employer would volunteer to do free work for their clients.

I think it is too. I believe it was viewed as "cost of business" and providing a higher level of service to keep the customers happy.

Well, my previous boss - retired in May 2021 - was totally fine with it other than my employment with her came first over anyone else. But I was still allowed to work on those other customers if the need arose during the day. I'm salary at my day job, so I work when I need to work to get things done, while it's really not as flexible as that sounds - i.e. I'm expected to be here 99% of the time from 7-5, if I'm occasionally not - it's generally not a big deal.

Wasn't that the same boss who took away your scheduled vacation? (I am remembering that correctly?)

I'm hourly here and puts a cramp in the hours I can get real IT (IT, Bench, Support, etc..) work done because of OT.
