RE: Softphones - complaints
I have found most of our home users have crappy wifi right from the carrier. The (in most cases) Spectrum provided Ubee gateways with wifi are junk; while may of our other users have old crappy routers (surprisingly, one user is still on a WRT-54G and has no issues). I am in the process of trying to procure some old Unifi AP's and power injectors that I can pre-program and send out to the remote uses and have them plug into their routers just to get something better than the crap Spectrum uses.

RE: Reducing complexity on storage
@krzykat Xpenology is a great tool to learn Synology with, or to play but I would never use it in a "production" environment (yep even home). Get a real Synology with support or as others have said a server with RAID, linux dist of choice, and Samba. Myself, Im taking one of the 'servers" someone left in my junk pile and loading Proxmox and from there setting up a shared server of some sort.

RE: Recovering SQL Server 2005 Databases
Kinda Sorta? I had a 2005 one die maybe 6,7 years ago and was able to attach the MDF to a 2008 server I had running in a lab environment to at least get a backup of the data. basic procedure is here:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/24399664/convert-attach-sql-server-2005-mdf-to-2008-mdf#:~:text=Best practice is to backup, older versions of SQL Server. -

I am running SQL standard 2016 on server 2019 I do not know if its "supported" but it is working and so far no issues; granted very small DB may 400MB but its what the vendor wanted.

RE: Worthwhile IT projects or products for small office with extra money?
@JasGot What's their backup solution? My thought would be a NAS for backup like a Synology, or budget the money for monthly fees to B2. Definitely worth the investment.
