@scottalanmiller You can also use a website for this. I have some private pages on my website where i list things I need to look up occasionally. They aren't secret details or anything but just key things I did for this software or how I helped this user. That kind of stuff.

I also dabbled in vb but hated it. To me, it just made no sense and everything was harder to accomplish anything. So, to me my opinion is a little different than yours on this, I still think plain vb was horrible and should be scrubbed from the face of the earth. I went back to the c family and never looked back.
Everything that was bad about BASIC, but worse with no excuse for it, lol.
Yeah that's pretty much my opinion too. I guess it made more sense to others but not me.

RE: Getting IT Wrong, Every Day
I asked today if I could do something proper with our documentation since we have stuff scattered around everywhere. I wanted to do a wiki since I do that at home. I found out that it can be switched on in our new ticketing system but just has not yet. The person in charge of the ticketing system is very knowledgeable but just has too much to do. At the same time he holds on to everything he can as do others there. Until I found that out I thought it was a good idea...

RE: There Is No Such Thing as a Read Only User
This is a rather strange request for sure. Any admin, whether medium level or higher, should recognize the lack of sense this makes and that it is hardly feasible in any meaningful fashion. Of course the skeptic in me asks if your a medium level admin why are you asking this in the first place?

He's the BEST!!!! Atlanta native and really nice guy. My ex was good friends w his sister, so I've met Big Mike a few times. Possibly the most talented artist in town right now.
Here's the new mural on the side of a bar called Church (which is a must-do if you're in ATL):
dang he is one of the most talented singers i have ever heard. i am just blown away. love that mural too. im coming to atlanta next may, i will have to go there!

Quitting Vi
Probably a silly question here. I see people quitting Vi using :x and :wq if I remember right. I've always just used the :x option to save my work. Am I using this correctly or should I be doing it another way?

@jmoore Definitely hit me up before you're here... I'll try to come up with some places you should see, plus we can grab some drinks and food.
that sounds like an awesome plan. i will be with the family because we are going to an aquarium there so my son can see a whale shark but i will work it out so i can do some other things. church will be on that list

RE: Fedora 26: time to go upgrade
Mainly at home, however, i do keep a virtual machine running at work with it installed. Some things I just prefer to do using Fedora. I find it much more flexible and I just like the software better in a lot of cases.

RE: what programming language can I learn now ???
If you are on Windows then most people will suggest Powershell but its really just scripting. You can do do things with C++, Python, Java, and Ruby but you have to be a lot more creative. Powershell can start giving results fast.
If you are on Linux most will just use bash scripting or possibly a little bit of C.

I don't have a lot of experience in this area with different products but I can recommend Xero at least for personal/small business needs.

RE: What do you like for a non expensive audio setup for surround sound TV/movies?
@dashrender said in What do you like for a non expensive audio setup for surround sound TV/movies?:
Started in another thread, several people like their componentized setup for audio.
I think most who have even dabbled in audio know that to get great sound you frequently have to separate the components out to different devices, I was going to make a list, but I realize that I'm so uneducated in this field I can't even make a list that won't be laughed at.
So onto my question - for a typical consumer of home TV/Movies what do you guys like? Let's go with a budget of $1500 for all audio gear (pre/amp/processor/speakers, cabling, etc).
Unlike what most salesmen tell you(the same in IT), the quality comes from the source devices, not the speakers. At your budget you can hardly go wrong if you buy quality sources. What will be your most used source?
Stream tv?
watch blu-ray movies?
listen to music? -
RE: Why QuickBooks Is Not a Business Tool
@scottalanmiller said in Why QuickBooks Is Not a Business Tool:
Not quite, because in theory desktops work just fine on their own without a server. The RDBMS isn't for administration, it's for arbitration. It's more like hundreds of users sharing a single workstation without different accounts. So you have to trust all other users not to mess with your files. And you have to trust that they will leave sticky notes saying what files they have been working on and if they can be changed or not. And they have to trust that you will honor their sticky notes.
It's "blind, full trust, anonymous users." It's utterly insane.Ok i see. My understanding was still a bit off then. That sounds just crazy. I investigated Quickbooks once but didn't like it. Thats why I could recommend Xero. I just didn't know how Quickbooks worked and why it was so bad. Thanks again for the explanation.
