In general we shift our focus from "Hyper-V and VMware" to "VMware and KVM". Reason: Hyper-V doesn't grow anymore and KVM has very high chances to supersede it. VMware... There's just more money there 🙂

Could you expand on your statement about Hyper-V not growing? Thanks

% between VMware, ESXi and KVM for acquired number of customers doesn't look good for Microsoft.

That is interesting. Do you think (or anyone here) that it is because of Microsoft focusing and moving more clients on Azure?

      Apples and Oranges

Cloud Hosting is different from on prem. Even if you want to look at cloud hosting, AWS is slaughtering Azure.

I'm using Fedora 28 Workstation with KVM running on cinnamon... i just use copy/paste (ctrl+C/V)

Or do you mean on a KVM-only host? (gui-less)

I haven't tried drag n drop... no idea why, but I will tomorrow!

Yes that is directly related and exactly what needs to be done.

I mentioned in my post that it's the two middle ones in the screen shot that are missing, H264, that are installed with ffmpeg-libs.

I usually put it under ~/.themes. You might need to log out and back in. I also just use tweak tool. Never done it with cli.

I used Evolution on my box and this works very well. But i stopped using it in favour of OWA once we were on office365. Evolution still works on office365, but the owa interface (chromium and firefox alike) works very well.

I had to go through a million settings to get it the way I wanted it, but now I am liking it ok. Definitely not as good as Outlook or OWA, but usable.

I also found that you cannot trust Evolution to listen for exchange updates. I found it was spotty and unreliable. I set it to check with server every minute instead. I know that isn't ideal, but I can't miss stuff for 20 minutes.

Do you also have Listen for server change notifications checked too?

I tried just checking that originally .

@tim_g said in Eight new Spectre Variant Vulnerabilities for Intel Discovered - four of them critical:

      Wow....

But how practical is it to not only first exploit the Spectre vulnerability, but then to get any useful data from most likely other unknown shared VMs on the same box? (really, only on a shared hosting provider host is where 99.9% of the threat is)

This stuff is discarded speculative cached data... maybe a thumbnail you won't be viewing (if it goes that big), or maybe a few bits leading in that direction... maybe credentials (that are encrypted anyways)...

It seems like all you can do is "fish" for unknown discarded speculative data... it doesn't really sound like a huge practical threat, however, I do see the severity and horrible potential of it, just not the practicality.

Here is how I see it playing out in the larger world. Bad actors will be spinning up VMs on hosting providers' hardware, and then trolling for data of cohosted VMs. It isn't a large problem in a secure environment where the list of people who can spin up VMs also have the credentials necessary to make a Spectre-ng attack a waste of time and energy.

Also worth noting, in a cloud environment the data that can be caught this way is essentially random and ephemeral. What works today won't work tomorrow, and whose data you are getting is normally unknown. The scale and anonymity of cloud computing makes these attacks more possible, but less effective, almost to the point of useless.

One a small shop, the number of resumes is small. Not many people apply to work at one person shops. Especially these days. Even larger shops with full IT teams often get nearly zero applications for IT work these days. You have to go seek applicants, they rarely come to you.

You assume they using good job descriptions and revealing the company size

Oh, you are assuming a situation where they are posting to job boards. I see, that makes sense. Although I can tell you that even when doing so, you get almost nothing as a smaller shop.

Are you in the EU? If not why would you think the laws there cover you?

Right, you cannot SELL your licenses in US, but what would prohibit you from buying a legally sold license? That is what I am trying to figure out.

I am not selling, but looking at buying. Completely different rules in many cases.

Buying them is likely legal. Using them while in the US is where the US law, rather than the EU one, would matter.

The law is against selling, correct? So if you buy, is there something stating you cannot use?

If there is, it would have to be in the EULA.

Here is the CTSLabs "Proof of Concept" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrhVhFHTe9o. I think they're trying to demonstrate that they can flash the UEFI with a BIOS whose hash doesn't match a valid one. I'm not entirely sure. They lost a ton of credibility when they stated that a typical way for an attacker to hack a server is using the BUILTIN\Administrator account and then copy over the BIOS file to the C$.

I went with Lubunutu in the end. The hardware I have is old, but not ancient. Centrino 2 and 3 gb of RAM. I tried puppy linux and bodhi linux, but didn't care for either.

Puppy was fast, but ugly as holy hell. Bodhi didnt seem to work right on my system. It was sluggish for some reason.

Ya Puppy is just bad. I hadn’t Slitaz running on an old thin client at one point. It worked pretty well for that.

I didn't see your reply until after I decided on Lubuntu. I will try a Slitaz on a usb drive.

Ya I didn’t mean for you to have to do that. It’s ok, doesn’t look awesome but def looks better than Puppy.

I dont feel obligated. I just want to give it a shot 🙂

The most optimistic scenario at Bitcoin's price is about twenty thousand. This is for really good confluences of circumstances and sufficient capital investment. Now I'm more realistic about this and look the price here -modded-, hold and see attitude.

Ya I'd just move to KVM on Ubuntu. it will perform better being a type 1 and you can leverage all of the extras (things like libguestfs, the virt tools, etc).
