But I will say that at least CDW keeps trying to have our account rep be a hot chick... Current rep is "Britney", and she sounds hot. I don't buy anything from her, but I will occasionally take one of her calls, just to hear her try to use her hot girl tricks on me (I don't fall for them).

She be like "hi there, would you like to buy our latest motherbrains!"

    • Someone help me do most basic thing ever in O365, share folder with everyone

I must be stupid but I can't seem to share a OneDrive folder with all the users in O365.
MS clearly has an Everyone and Everyone except external users groups. I go to share a folder and share it with the Everyone group, and nothing happens. It doesn't notify users, doesn't invite them, doesn't add the folder to 'shared with me', doesn't show up in sync etc.

What am I doing wrong here? I have O365 for Business. All I want is for this "Everyone" group to work so I can share folders with all users in the O365 account.

Or are they saying I can only share folders one user at a time all the time? Is the Everyone group just fake and unusable or something?

@thwr said in Any good free server monitoring services?:

Zabbrix, OpenNMS, Icinga... there are so many of them. It highly depends on what you need - and at which scale.

I mentioned, just basic performance and monitoring, some historical tracking, alerts if something breaks.

Only need to monitor a few web servers.

Ease of use is important, I don't want to have to learn a new language or spend weeks figuring out how to integrate some massive architecture.

    • Any good free server monitoring services?

I had the free New Relic server monitor on a couple servers for some years. They recorded basic stuff you'd expect like cpu load, ram usage, hdd usage, and some other things.

New Relic got rid of their free server monitor so I started looking for alternatives. Pretty sparse niche if you ask me.

I've seen some people using Nodequery but it seems like development hasn't budged in forever. I've kept my eye on Pinguzo and that hasn't budged either. Both are beta products.
Then there is Nixstats which seems more mature but the free offer is quite sparse, 5 monitors and 1 server.

So I'm just looking for some kind of monitoring tool that will record performance stats and send alerts if things go poof. I'm also planning on migrating a major site I run so I'd like to track performance of the server in a before/after kind of thing.

Any other tools in the running?

Not the DVD spec per se, but certainly DRM/encryption/scrambling/limiting techniques are always changing. Software has to stay up to date with cracking all the latest protections if you want to back up titles. Especially newer Blu-ray stuff. Can DVD Shrink even open a Blu-ray? I doubt it.

Sure, blu-ray is a different animal. Store bought DVD movies are too. For your specific DVDs, it sounds like an older ripper would be fine.

you said in the OP, that you doubt these are even copy protected. What is the issue?

No issue, I just want quality up to date software and I'm willing to buy it.

I went ahead and bought the WinX DVD stuff. Time will tell if it's useful!

You bought the software without even knowing if it will be useful?

If I get a supersonic egg burrito from Sonic, maybe throw in tots or cinnasnacks...that stuff lasts me nearly all day. Half the time I can skip lunch entirely. Very filling.

Yeah because it's over 1/4 of your suggested daily intake (2000 calories).

I'd be pretty full off of that as well.

Foods that are calorie dense don't necessarily have to also be filling. A 1400 calorie frapp coffee desert drink barely registers.

But ya, the egg burrito, while I can't exactly define it as health food, is not bad. They put jalapenos in there, onion, tomato. I like to think it offsets the tortilla and cheese parts 😉

DVD Fab seems fine but using the trial put watermarks all over my vids, and of course I can't seem to buy it either so it's a bust. Pretty expensive too.

MakeMKV I don't believe leaves original menus and chapters and such intact unless I read the site wrong? Doesn't it just rip out the main video title only?

I was just testing a cheaper free/pro one called WinX DVD Copy Pro that seems to be recommended by various tech mags. https://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-copy-pro/

The titles I need probably don't even have any encryption or anything. In fact one of them I simply browsed the DVD and directly copied out the TS folders. Seemed to work just fine doing that so I don't know.

Try dvd shrink. That is what I used back in the day.

I used to use that too. But last version came out in like July 2004 so...

    • What's the best DVD ripper right now?

I need to rip a handful of DVDs. These are older, non Hollywood titles from a company that went out of business and we bought their inventory. I doubt they even have any fancy encryption on them or anything. Training videos.

But I want to rip them in original condition, leaving DVD menus and all that intact, not just ripping the main video in other words. I want an identical copy able to be re-burned to DVD again (we have DVD burning hardware/software for this).

In any event, there are lots of DVD ripping apps but this particular niche is sketchy in terms of spyware and junk programs. I don't trust a lot of the titles that pop up on Google.

The only app that has name brand recognition to me is DVD Fab. I've actually tried to buy it multiple times in the last 4 or 5 days but it rejects credit card every time so I'm like, meh. Sketchy.

What else is good on the market? I not only want to rip accurate copies, but being able to rip just main videos is also nice, removing DRM/encryption, even video format converting would be handy. I know there are programs that only do standard titles versus Bluray. I guess the more features the better.

$15-$20 hour is high class living for a single dude with no debts and a one or two bed apartment!

It's when the wife and kids come, and for some reason they want to eat food and get a van, that $20/hr ain't gunna cut it!

I've nearly doubled my income from pre-dating to family life, but it's still not enough!

    • RE: Let's talk security camera options

I found only three potential options for completely wireless.

Ring Spotlight Battery, Arlo Pro 2 (from Netgear), and one called Reolink Argus.

Ya I don't expect much from a wireless camera. At best, if it's online, we'll get a few seconds of recording, maybe some snapshots, and an alert sent to our phones. That's all they are trying to cover on the cheap, with fast setup.

As for the building lease, I don't care. It's a two story building, metal studs, stucco, firewall between stories. Just a mess for wiring. A mess for drilling into stucco too. We are out of lease period now so boss is afraid to bother landlord lest they decide we have to reup the lease and wants to charge a lot more!

I'd love to do a full security camera setup here but with wiring and hardware it's many many thousands of dollars. And that might get in the way of xmas bonus, just saying.

    • RE: Looking for some neat Server Build Projects

Ya, I just never get around to it.

      For two reasons really.

      1. Some of the projects are purely made for myself, so I just use MySQL and Navicat and do my thing. Or the data is so rarely accessed, people just come to me to find out something.

      2. The project is temporary or purely an archive.

For those project which will be accessed by others, the data either sits in Excel because it's not that much data anyway, or I build out a little web interface using a CMS though it might lack some CUD, at least others can read/browse the data.

The problem with these things is that, when data is needed, it's needed NOW BLAST YOU! But once we're done, it's barely needed and thus not worth the time to build a crud app around it.

And my final excuse, down here around 10%, I just don't care any more. If somebody needs a report, I gather and extract the data and make a pretty report as needed. Too much other stuff happening. For example, creating a DVD video from source footage when the boss took a trip. Yes, I do that, lol
