I need to rip a handful of DVDs. These are older, non Hollywood titles from a company that went out of business and we bought their inventory. I doubt they even have any fancy encryption on them or anything. Training videos.

But I want to rip them in original condition, leaving DVD menus and all that intact, not just ripping the main video in other words. I want an identical copy able to be re-burned to DVD again (we have DVD burning hardware/software for this).

In any event, there are lots of DVD ripping apps but this particular niche is sketchy in terms of spyware and junk programs. I don't trust a lot of the titles that pop up on Google.

The only app that has name brand recognition to me is DVD Fab. I've actually tried to buy it multiple times in the last 4 or 5 days but it rejects credit card every time so I'm like, meh. Sketchy.

What else is good on the market? I not only want to rip accurate copies, but being able to rip just main videos is also nice, removing DRM/encryption, even video format converting would be handy. I know there are programs that only do standard titles versus Bluray. I guess the more features the better.

DVDFab is what I always used. But it's been a long time so take it with a grain of NaCl. But it was the best tool I found back when I used it.

I've been using MakeMKV for quite some time and it's pretty straightforward. Definitely recommend.

Maybe you should make an ISO if they're not encrypted or protected? This will certainly keep the titles and menus intact.

DVD Fab seems fine but using the trial put watermarks all over my vids, and of course I can't seem to buy it either so it's a bust. Pretty expensive too.

MakeMKV I don't believe leaves original menus and chapters and such intact unless I read the site wrong? Doesn't it just rip out the main video title only?

I was just testing a cheaper free/pro one called WinX DVD Copy Pro that seems to be recommended by various tech mags. https://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-copy-pro/

The titles I need probably don't even have any encryption or anything. In fact one of them I simply browsed the DVD and directly copied out the TS folders. Seemed to work just fine doing that so I don't know.

Try dvd shrink. That is what I used back in the day.

That was my thought... DVD spec hasn't changed in a long time, so if an older program works with your OS, why not use that?

Not the DVD spec per se, but certainly DRM/encryption/scrambling/limiting techniques are always changing. Software has to stay up to date with cracking all the latest protections if you want to back up titles. Especially newer Blu-ray stuff. Can DVD Shrink even open a Blu-ray? I doubt it.

Sure, blu-ray is a different animal. Store bought DVD movies are too. For your specific DVDs, it sounds like an older ripper would be fine.

I've used DVDshrink and Handbrake in the past. Careful with DVDshrink since its not developed or maintained anymore a lot of people are binding it with malware.

For your specific DVDs, it sounds like an older ripper would be fine.

you said in the OP, that you doubt these are even copy protected. What is the issue?

No issue, I just want quality up to date software and I'm willing to buy it.

I went ahead and bought the WinX DVD stuff. Time will tell if it's useful!
