This has already saved me a few times, when having to reload or restore the OS while keeping the /data or /home partitions intact. All cases were when using LVM.

I've had to do this a few times & re-installing the o/s on the separate partition made it super easy!

@francesco-provino This is a 3 + 1 node hyperconverged cluster with Gluster, HA, Live Migration etc!

That's what I was wondering. I didn't know if it was a self hosted engine (couldn't think of the name last night) or multiple node setup.

This setup uses the Hosted Engine.

Let us talk about Gluster, how do you feel safe with it ?

saw you choose an option with RAID 6, i dont get that cause from my trial, I make RAID and group disks then create Gluster volume from those mdraid volume, but it seems you did RAID 6 afterwards, hmm whats the logic behind that ?

What type of Gluster volume are you using, just distributed ?

I m still learning HCI so thus the beginner vibe

      No RAID6, I'm using RAID10.

Gluster volume is Replicate + Arbiter

This is a good blog post to get you started: https://www.ovirt.org/blog/2018/02/up-and-running-with-ovirt-4-2-and-gluster-storage/

I tried setting up oVirt a few versions ago and from what I could find, it's almost expected you have a minimum of 3 physical hosts for it.

So no, you won't be able to manage a standalone KVM server since everything has to get built to be managed by the oVirt Engine.

You can now do a single host w Gluster:

Well, first of all I wouldn't do a split array. OBR (One Big RAID), unless you have a very specific reason to do otherwise.

Easy to do with my SM box, since it has 2x 2.5" sleds on the backside running off the onboard SATA.

Virtualize, all the time and all the things.

      Yes agreed!

Fedora, probably on top of XCP-NG. Assuming you don't have a Scale cluster to use at least.

You are one of those in the XCP camp! I tend to prefer Fedora 28.

Of course, I'd lean to using NextCloud for file storage anymore for most file storage, so probably wouldn't be deploying new NFS server in most cases.

No NextCloud, this is for storing backups of vm's.

@fateknollogee said in NFS Server...what to build??:

So you want to build an NFS Server to "share" files with other clients.

What o/s would you base this build on...?
Install o/s on bare metal or virtualize?

      HW is simple:

      • 2x SSD for o/s
      • 4 - xx SSD for NFS shares

I set one up on Fedora Server to act as a storage repository for ReaR backups. I did it on a VM.

Where is that blog post or it didn't happen? ..jk

@Emad-R No good reason to pay the premium for nVMe drives just for installing the o/s.
      I use Intel S35xx/S36xx - 120GB.
Plenty available on ebay at $50 each!

      I've backed up a few vm's to AWS S3 & to on-prem servers.

So would you only use it in a "cluster" of servers?

You can do a single node or 3 nodes. (nodes aka hosts)
      Those are your typical setups.

      oVirt single node gluster install

In the next release (which will 4.2.7), you'll be able to deploy a single node install from Cockpit UI.

I haven't had a chance to use Silverblue yet, but on atomic (renamed to Silverblue) you could install RPMs but they were installed on an overlay filesystem. Pretty much everything on here is flatpak/snap or Docker.

It's actually pretty cool. It uses ostree for updates. I watched a guy rebase his OS from Fedora to CentOS and back and nothing changed from the user perspective. Pretty interesting.

I have to agree, just quickly scanning the docs, I like what I'm seeing.

So far for me, no regrets using fc 26/27/28 as my daily machine after many years on Win 7/8/8.1/10.
