    • RE: DIY router build

      I'm with Pete here.

Buy an Edgerouter-x for your primary home firewall/router. Then decide what you want for WiFi - I've been using Unifi APs for nearly a decade with little to no issues.

As for your learning - physical hardware is really mainly good for learning hypervisors, beyond that you could do everything in a VPS provider like Vultr. No upfront fees, no power drain on you at all. I'm not sure what they offer on the networking side, i.e. you setting up your own private network playground where you setup a router on the edge, etc... but the other typical server stuff they can definitely provide like any other VM would.

      Uber Breach 2022

Argh, why the heck is there Windows development on a platform like Uber? And who approved THAT GIT checkin?

I'm sure their desktop environment is Windows for their non techies. And there's probably little to no separation between the Uber app platform and their staff.

Not that I really think I need it, but out of curiosity, if I were to get appropriate fiber connector for each end and insert into the same port on both sides is that all that would be needed to make another pair active?

Maybe yes, maybe no - it depends if there is fiber behind ports 2 and 3. If there is fiber between your building connecting ports 2, and port 3, then yes, just install a fiber patch cable on each side and you have another connection.

I have a similar issue with a 3rd party developed application that uses an access database. The only way I could find to workaround was to add the trusted location through a registry edit. Here is the notes I have on what I did

I was able to add \\FileServer\Data\ via the built in GUI, by clicking Add new location and then browsing to Network and clicking on the FileServer item, etc. This added the location like this. This works, as I can open the file and have no warning about disabled macros, but is a work around. The Mapped Drive should work also.

I then exported the key and tweaked it to add K:\ in Location1.
No luck opening the file via K:\ does not work.

Even though it does show up in trust center after adding via the registry.

As a side note, I can not click on K:\ entry in the GUI either. I can click on the other two entries.

is K mapped with a name or an IP?

@scottalanmiller How were you coming to recommend Google Sheets if you didn't know anything about their process/workflow already?

And while I consider it super sad - it doesn't surprise me that they didn't know they were on Sheets vs Excel because the first brand into an area often becomes a generic term for the entire thing regardless of what actual product they are actually using.

      examples: Kleenex vs tissue
      Xerox vs copy machine
      Tivo vs DVR
      Excel vs spreadsheet software

      that's no good

No good that they put home equipment into a business? Yeah, not so good.

      that's what I meant.

Why do they care about hiding their SSID? Just put a password on it and the problem is solved.

And if the restaurant doesn't want to provide WIFI to their customers - them make the SSID something that's not obviously theirs, and when people ask - what's the WIFI - "sorry we don't have wifi"

Why Eero over Ubiquiti? Business versus consumer. Does the pro version have APs with wired connections?

Prob because management is much easier. I ditched my APs and edgerouter for a single Amplifi which I can update and control from my phone. My mom has a Deco setup and it works very similarly and is great as well.

OH - yeah, for home - I'm totally on board wiht Amplifi, even though they are an arm and a leg! (all of those mesh systems are)

It's consumer shit - why would you ever want to hide your WIFI network - that's a business need.

it's not even a business need. It does nothing at all for anything since it's trivial to find hidden SSIDs.

      True!

Aww shit, you were in my neck of the woods... But I was camping in N Ga, getting rained on. Started Saturday night and didn't stop. We were leaving Sunday anyway, but packing out in the rain blows. At least the tent finally gave up under the pressure, she was given a proper "rolled up hastily and thrown in a dumpster" funeral.

My sister and brother-in-law put Eero in they're 7000+ sq ft house. They like it because it was easy to setup and they don't have to mess with it. I prefer Ubiquiti enterprise gear myself (the consumer stuff is, well, consumer crud)

They are consumers - I expect nothing less. If the top most bandwidth isn't needed in the far reaches of the home, then this likely works just fine for them.

      I don't know. Don't companies use Sharepoint?

I guess I'm wondering in general if companies use internal social sites. Or perhaps they just use messaging apps like Teams and Slack or just...nothing.

So OTHER social sites, yes. We've used the ones from Microsoft (Yammer) and Zoho Connect and the idea is fine. I like them. I just wouldn't use one from Meta. But conceptually, I find them slightly useful but not very.

what he said - I've never seen a company using Meta's workplace version.

@dmacf10 said in Mikrotik software firewall/router?:

@PhlipElder Odd that you had stability issues. When properly configured I've never had any issues at all besides the occasional lightning strike back in the day on the PtP sites. When used in controlled environments they have world-class stability and reliability. At least that's been my experience with the 500+ that I've worked with.

It's been a while, but they were primarily due to the site-to-site VPN going down and the occasional lockup.

There's always been "suspicion" around inexpensive products since we get what we pay for.

Ubiquiti is no less in the crosshairs of that suspicion with it being justified.

Once bitten, twice shy so really haven't looked back.

Are there folks that are running MicroTik now with no issues? It sounds like you are?

Yeah cause the likes of Cisco have never had an issue like that.
