@scottalanmiller Still constantly restarting it, still no luck. Also, been working on getting my work PC configured again, as it died.

Did you ever get that single drive working? The small SAS Drive that you were going to try?

      GFI Max.

I've heard a lot of good things about GFI Max.

I have used Kaseya in the past with their educational package... I can't say enough bad things about it. Although that may make me look unprofessional. I had issues with the software, their support, our sales rep, everything it was just a disaster.

    • RE: NAS needed

Less than a gig? What is their internet connection like? Why do they need a NAS suddenly? Could they get away with using something like ODfB, Dropbox, or Box? That way the users have it backed up on their desktops and in the "cloud".

I don't think I would purchase a NAS for less then a gig for just two users.

What is stopping these users from creating a share on one of their desktops and then mounting it on the second users machine?

@thanksaj New Old Stock...acronym from when I was an automotive technician.

Not sure how that relates to computers? When I was working with a plumbing/heating company they used New Old stock to refer to things that the manufacturer discontinued and we had it left on the shelf. These were saved for "emergency" purposes in case one died in the field and needed to be quickly replaced without trying to fit the replacement part in.

@Dashrender Not that I want to get rid of the CIFS shares. I just see added functionality when related to things like the web interface and sync client.

I've had request from a couple of remote people to use something like dropbox, although since I've implemented a VPN those requests are now non-existent.

Generation is really a big factor.

Fourth gens have been performing well from what I hear. My i7 in my laptop is 3rd gen.

I've still got a first Gen i7 in my primary gaming desktop. Wish I had the money to update.

      Gen 1 i7 on my wife's graphic design PC...triple channel memory....lasted 6 years before the mobo died. I wept a little...lol!

My mobo died last year, couldn't afford to rebuild so bought a new mobo...

You'd probably need a new motherboard too, no?

Probably would need to build anew. Hence the not enough money part. I do have dual 6950s (with the 6970 firmware unlocked) so I could probably still use those.

    • RE: Moving to cloud based file storage

@Dashrender If you're just going to use it for AD then you really don't need anything over the top and crazy for a server. One of those desktop server for a couple hundred dollars would probably be more then enough for what it is.... Bonus option would be to virtualize it and have it running as a VM. Backup the VM to an external source. Then you can bring it up on a laptop or something temporarily if that need arises. Very little money to invest in this instance. Move file services to sync with ODfB and Sharepoint (redirect favorites and desktop to the synced folder)

    • Nadella Loves Linux

      Interesting article on ZDNet today.

      http://www.zdnet.com/why-microsoft-loves-linux-7000035218/?s_cid=e539&ttag=e539&ftag=TRE17cfd61

      Key points:

      • 20% of all servers on Azure on Linux based (I thought the number would be higher)
      • Azure doesn't support Redhad Linux
      • Microsoft is the 5th largest code contributor to the Linux Kernel. This isn't really news but something interesting to say the least.
      • ZDNet comments are as bad as ever.

We have ~8 CAD machines. I was rooting for Xeons but got shot down due to price (it wasn't that much more but a $3000 machine is already a bit much). i7s did fit the bill though. We did try some i5s but I got nothing but complaints from the two users we had one them about the speed of renderings and of their program.

I've worked relatively recently on CAD-like machines (doing CUDA work rather than graphical) and our standard was dual Xeons. They were pretty nice 🙂

One of my engineers would have loved to work on a dual Xeon box (who wouldn't). He is constantly running into a bottleneck when it comes to doing some of his bigger projects. Thankfully he is really the only one that has that many parts on a single project as no one else is seeing the same slowdowns. He is also running on a 2nd gen i7 which may be part of the issue.

I'm finding more and more people will load up a system with RAM but not get an equivalent processor. Having 16GB of RAM and a GPU with 2GB of RAM (assuming DDR5 but not sure what that card has) is important, but if you have an i3 or low-to-mid-range i5, that will be your bottleneck. Chances are your disk won't be your bottleneck, but there is always that as a possibility too.

I don't think that you'll find any functioning CAD shop running anything less than an i7. It is normal to run Xeons.

    • RE: Owncloud Windows 7/8 Integration

@g.jacobse The .com is their enterprise version (although it does also link to the community version. The .org is the community version. It is mostly a dropbox replacement type of program. For the most part you have a client and it syncs files to the server. The nice part is that this is hosted on your own network so no files are being stored in an outside cloud.

I was thinking of two different use cases.

      1. Replacement for home folders and collaboration folders. Instead of having those CIFS mounted you could have a client sync your home folder back and forth. If this server is available on the WAN or via a VPN it would sync no matter where they were.

      2. FTP replacement, this program would make it much easier to share files with customers. We are currently running into some of the limitations of FTP and I am investigating solutions to resolve that.

I don't think it is comparable per say to Sharepoint as there is no sites or collaboration suite built into ownCloud.

Alright it looks like the following is the case:
      From here https://forum.owncloud.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=21656

the native windows implementation of WebDAV only use an SSLv2 Hello message, and will only negotiate up to TLSv1.0. If you have disabled TLSv1.0 and only using TLSv1.1+ on your server you will get issues like described above.

@scottalanmiller I'll keep digging into it. What NTG is using it for would be my use case for this company as well. I wonder if Windows 10 has better support for webdav.

@scottalanmiller What purpose do you use it for? A dropbox/box replacement? Or do you use it to collaborate and share files with clients? Which I guess are things dropbox/box can also do. So I I assume it is a dropbox/box replacement.

It is a really nice system. It works very well with the Linux computers that I use. Just not so much with the Windows ones.

One of the recommendations was that I needed to have a public certificate for my server so I got a free one from StartSSL and have been testing with that.
