So the biggest item missing from the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is it lacks a central management component.

Which isn't horrible but it does leave some things to be desired. . .

No, it is not missing. That is a feature of the Veeam B&R product. You can (or soon can) manage Veeam Endpoints that point to a Veeam B&R instance.

Yea with licensing, the topic is solved. Veeam Endpoint works without limits. But it lacks a central management interface.

B&R is a licensed product, right?

      Yes, it is.

Great! BTW, I read a while ago that WSUS was going away? Yet today in my searches for this issue I see that it is indeed still alive and well on 2012 servers? Did I dream that WSUS was going away?

It often should go away, but I don't know that MS is taking it away.

I'm resurrecting this old ghost today.

I've got a couple of police computers that they want the screensaver password turned off for. Our remote registry editor doesn't have HKCU available of course, and Powershell is giving me the same sort of errors it was for @gjacobse. Did anyone ever get it figured out, or am I stuck waiting for them to call me back?

You can always browse to the HKEY_Users then the SID for the current user that is loggged in using remote registry, this is the same thing as HKCU.

Tip: if you don't want to look up the SID using powershell just right click on the SID and check the security settings, it should give you hints to who is who unless it's been customized.

Not the same thing as its not an AirPlay (AirParrot) solution, but is a broadcasting solution to a stream or file.

I looked at AirParrot and thought that it was a broadcasting solution. What do you see it as doing?

Stream from a laptop (windows or mac) to Chromecast or AppleTV connected to a TV for screen mirroring.

I thought that that was what that did.

Veeam also has a Linux based recovery environment that can provide full recovery of Linux VM's into the HC3 system.

Unlike windows, the virtio drivers are already built in to the Veeam Linux Recovery ISO so there is no additional step required for it to see the disk to recover to ... so in this example, I just want to restore all of disk vda from the backup repostory to the blank vda disk.

Having TaskScheduler in Windows run PowerShell scritps is like rolling dice depending on the context in which you are running the script...

      So when in doubt:

I always have guaranteed success when starting the PS script from a batch file first from a scheduled task.

Create a scheduled tasked using these lines in an elevated powershell window:

      Creates a scheduled task:

      $action = New-ScheduledTaskAction -Execute 'C:\ProgramData\scripts\PSKickoff.bat' $trigger = New-ScheduledTaskTrigger -AtStartup $principal = New-ScheduledTaskPrincipal -GroupId "BUILTIN\Administrators" -RunLevel Highest $settings = New-ScheduledTaskSettingsSet $task = New-ScheduledTask -Action $action -Trigger $trigger -Principal $principal -Settings $settings Register-ScheduledTask -TaskName "Scheduled Task Friendly but Meaningful Name" -InputObject $task

Note: Change above New-ScheduledTaskTrigger -AtStartup to match your schedule. Here's the info for it.

The batch file that the scheduled task runs:

      Powershell.exe -executionpolicy bypass -File "C:\ProgramData\scripts\yourScript.ps1"

It would also be possible to break down the files with WinSCP and transfer them with FileZilla.

Get WinSCP: http://winscp.net/eng/index.php - "WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client, FTP client, WebDAV client and SCP client for Windows."

      Add a Custom Command:
      Code: rar a -r -m0 -v20m "!.rar" "!"
'Remote Command', 'Apply to Directories'... Add the Custom Commands toolbar.
This command will use Rar (install it on your server) to spit the file(s)/directory into 20mb numbered rar files using no compression, therefore very quickly. If you multi-select files, they'll each have their own multi-part rar file, nice.

We will still use Filezilla for transferring the files, using Simultaneous Transfers 😉 as it's by far the nicest/best working FTP client out there (even despite this missing, much needed functionality).

So now the every-day steps are:

Start WinSCP Log in to the server Browse to the file(s) Select them Click on the custom command's toolbar button ... it then gets to work processing (seconds or a minute perhaps)... Start Filesilla Log in to the server
8 ) Browse to the file(s) and the multi-part rars Select the rars Download them to the local machine ... watching the simultaneous transfers chomping thru the data! Unrar the local rar files when completed Delete the rar files from the remote server using WinSCP as it does it quicker.

      Finished.

Here is a script I made to set up a scheduled task to either launch a PowerShell script, or a batch file.

Comment out the $action line that you do NOT want to use. The below script will create a scheduled task that launches a PowerShell script called psScript.ps1.

Note that you must execute these lines in an elevated PowerShell window.

      #Requires -RunAsAdministrator $action = New-ScheduledTaskAction -Execute 'C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe' -Argument "-ExecutionPolicy bypass -NonInteractive -NoLogo -NoProfile -File '\\server\path\to\psScript.ps1'" # $action = New-ScheduledTaskAction -Execute '\\server\path\to\batchFile.bat' $trigger = New-ScheduledTaskTrigger -AtLogon $principal = New-ScheduledTaskPrincipal -GroupId "BUILTIN\Administrators" -RunLevel Highest $settings = New-ScheduledTaskSettingsSet $task = New-ScheduledTask -Action $action -Trigger $trigger -Principal $principal -Settings $settings Register-ScheduledTask -TaskName "kickoff" -InputObject $task

If you choose to launch the PowerShell script via a batch file, here's what you need to have in your .bat file:

      Powershell.exe -executionpolicy bypass -File "\\server\path\to\psScript.ps1"

The implementation of an Azure Stack would be something to get our heads around for the time being.

Hopefully it is better than the actual Azure system!

It is Azure, same thing, but you have a physical node on-prem. You pay for the hardware, and you get Azure a little cheaper, but it's fully managed by them.

It's really only for remote places with bad bandwidth imho.

Think like, needing cloud from an 18-wheeler in a remote location.

This sounds like a crappy version of the AWS Snowball

      Completely different.

This is like making your portion of the AWS cloud in-house, including the entire AWS stack.

Again, not too useful unless you are trying to bring the cloud to a remote location to avoid excessive latency or to somewhere the internet doesn't exist... like linking it to a satellite connection during a disaster or something.

There are other real uses, but that would be for bigger enterprises... for most SMBs, Azure Stack would never be a consideration.
