Literally just got off of a meeting where we put the last piece in place for our first in house POS system, BTW 😉

      i'm interested.

Not for hospitality industry. But this is our first foray into POS and crossing over industries in the future is obviously very possible.

you made it for the Vets?

      Yes

You guys should look into making pharmacy software, you could likely make a killing, and be light years ahead of the seemingly junk crap that's out there now.

That's a great idea. And my family is all pharmacists, so we have like endless direct access to resources.

I really don't know the requirements for the interconnectedness - which this are... but yeah, so many of the systems are just old as F.

@Dashrender so much PC driven medical equipment out there will be affected, not to mention the EHR systems that get, at best, medical compliance patching and are stuck on older non-10 MS OS'es

The shit thing is that most have no way of knowing if the device is running Win7 embedded or not.

But they SHOULD have a way to know if their vendor is providing HIPAA required updates! If they don't, they can't deploy it.

The last upgrade I did (8.1 -> 10) worked great except that Webroot got uninstalled. Which takes 90 seconds to fix, so no biggie.

LOL - If I were the boss, I could do that. She has already ordered me to remove her from the monthly updates - so I have to nag her to do those manually, they can't be pushed to her via WSUS, because of reboots.

Make sure you have a "get it in writing to remove HIPAA requirement automation."

OH, good one.. She's breaking HIPAA by not being updated.

Over a certain time frame, yeah. 🙂 That's going to be the big motivation here. Maybe he should even go to the owners and say "as you title me an IT decision maker, I meed a sign off to allow disregarding the law and a statement that I'm not allowed to follow HIPAA against my requirements, knowledge, and recommendations." Don't argue it, just make them state that they've accepted responsibility by demanding he not follow HIPAA.

But since automatic is disabled, he has no insight to know the time frame is being kept. So yeah.

Right, even if she promises to do it as HIPAA requires, he needs to be indemnified from that.

I won't have any Win 7 systems by that time. At least that is the goal. I was thinking it was Jan 20, 2020. Guess I just confabulated that based on the year being 2020. Still have about 40 systems to issue to replace them.

Desktop OS is important, because you need a desktop to access the cloud - but it's only important in as much as it is used to sell Azure.

But you can access Azure just as well (or better in many cases) from Ubuntu, ChromeOS, Fedora, macOS, etc.

Of course, but you can push users towards Azure by controlling what users see on the desktop - think pre-installing Skype or Edge or the Microsoft App Store. Google do the same for their OS. Amazon are probably the most explicit in practically giving away Amazon Fires just to push Amazon services.

Two weeks left for those trying to go from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The Free Upgrade depends on the OS being current, remember.

Do you think those people who have not upgraded by the 14th will be UNABLE to install and activate from their Windows 7 or 8.1 key?

Notice how I didn't ask about any licensing issues. I already know that answer. 🙂

Likely the ability to upgrade won't change, if there was time/date detection, we'd already have heard about it.

Since that was the same OP, I'm guessing that that is not the issue with this one.

I would hope so, but we're all human and the issue seems very similar. I think he had another one where it was something about 2 instances of the server app like I mentioned in an earlier post but I couldn't find that one.

Makes me glad that I'm not doing 1st level support anymore 🙂 And even then, our 1st level guys have more discretion than this, both our internal IT team and the (currently) small team for external support.

1 & 2. Device manager > network adapters> uninstall > reboot > automatically picked it back up upon reboot then changed the settings for the NIC.

Nice, that's what I was hoping it would do, but I've dealt with NICs not coming back up after this process. Always made it easier to just be there and watch it.

I've heard of that issue - it was a calculated risk I was willing to take to get it working.. ya know?

Man, I just finished upgrading us to Windows 7 64 bit. Got the last XP machine removed last week...

Did you really target Windows 7 as the "go to" target, or was it simply that the last XP was removed finally and now Windows 7 is the "old stuff" left around?

nah I was just gaffin. I've upgraded all our stuff to Windows 10 1809 baby

Oh, haha. You never know. The number of people out there pushing for Windows is crazy high.

@scottalanmiller said in Yet another Communication issue....:

When troubleshooting on the network, always start at the bottom and work up.

Start with a ping to the IP (not the hostname.)
      Then ping the hostname.
      Then nslookup the hostname.

These basic steps tell you what is working and what isn't. Don't hop around, use progressive testing and you'll get to answers really quickly.

      That's good advice,
We usually start with Aloha based issues such as the control service running on Server, any files telling it to stop, that sort of thing.
      Then we move to Windows/networking.

If you know other things are working, you can move up the "stack" to where you can guarantee success. Like if you are transferring files, you know ping works.

So we don't have an answer yet, might take a while. But what we found that Active Directory was disconnecting because of a bad manual DNS entry. We've fixed that and are waiting to see if the issue recurs.

Do we assume there was DRM that was failing? lol

I'm not aware of any DRM. Is there something pointing to that that makes you assume that?

No - it was a simple guess as to what the program would want/need DNS for, assuming DNS is reason it was failing.

I assume it needs DNS for AD and it needs AD for SMB and needs SMB for the system files.

I just looked this stuff up - it's Vet software - for some reason I thought it was video editing software.

@G-I-Jones I like Windows 7 a lot, but since the things are moving forward we all will use something new instead very soon. Just remember how people wanted to stay on Windows XP, but finally updated their OS. The same will happen with Windows 7 and most of users will move on Windows 10 or will choose another option 😉
