      @syko24 free... and useless:

      Limitations of the free license:

The free license is limited to five locks per day which means the free edition defends your system against five unique attacks per day. [...] The free license does not contain reporting (like the PRO edition does).

Also, no official support for Windows Server 2016.

So moral of the story; don't bother with a $2.50 VULTR instance.

I had no issue with mine.

Right the system was probably totally overloaded at the time.

I'm sure it bounces all over the place.

@FATeknollogee to answer your original question, I host mine on site or in colo so far, simply because the capacity already exists for any client that is using it.

If I need to recommend it to a client without infrastructure, Vultr storage node will be the first suggestion for most deployment sizes as Scott mentioned.

@scottalanmiller and it stored in the same data center! So you still need an offsite backup of some sort.

Only if the concern is the data center going up in flames. It's a stateless device. Doesn't really hold valuable data.

Here's the reply from Vultr support today:

      Hello,

Thank you for your interest in our $2.50 'sandbox' plan. We are officially SOLD OUT of this extremely popular introductory offering. Please consider other VC2 sizes.

Why is this awesome plan sold out? This boils down to supply and demand. In order to maintain the high performance you've come to know and love at Vultr we limit the number of sandbox plans on each physical host node. This is to ensure the absolute best performance for our production-ready instances.

      Will this inventory be replenished?

Yes. In the next 2-3 weeks we will bring additional sandbox capacity online. Please consider visiting/refreshing https://my.vultr.com/deploy periodically as it is possible this could happen sooner.

      Thanks,

      Joshua Brand

How is the testing coming along?

Looks really nice. Not sure that it meets our needs well, though. It covers the pieces that we can handle easily but doesn't address the annoying pieces. Looks like a good product though.

No, and my understanding is that there isn't any licensing that allows for that, although I've not investigated too much. Because you upload your own copy and are not using SPLA it might be viable. You'll need VDI licensing, obviously, so that's a pain. But if you have a VDI licensing system in place, it might be doable.

Vultr does not officially support Windows Server 2016 yet, so you might run into a hardware issue.

@scottalanmiller said in Automatically Add New Vultr Fedora Minion to Salt Master:

If you are using Vultr as your VPS or Cloud Computing IaaS platform, then you have some simple tools to make automating a Salt Minion installation even easier. Vultr allows for "boot scripts" which run upon initial VM creation, along with their automatically installed system keys. Adding a tiny script can make all of the difference between needing to set up a new VM and having the entire process be totally automated.

Here is an example script that you can use. Notice that this is for Fedora and uses DNF. You will need a similar script for APT, YUM or other package management systems.

      #!/bin/sh dnf -y install salt-minion echo "master: you.salt.master" >> /etc/salt/minion systemctl restart salt-minion systemctl enable salt-minion

That's all that it takes. Select the script when building your VM(s) and look for them to auto-populate in your Salt Master's key request list.

But what will be the ID/name of this Fedora instance in salt master ?

LOL, I got confused. Was thinking we were on Sodium, not salt.

      It'll be your hostname.

For those wondering like @BRRABill the storage instances are MORE available now than two weeks ago and here are the prices:

      0_1488406540599_Screenshot from 2017-03-01 23-14-47.png

I believe that @BRRABill actually contact them last week and was told that they were phasing the storage instances out. Someone needs to contact again and verify.

I did. I followed up and was told that that was not true and that the channel that he used for support did not exist and they wanted names and links of how he was told that because he was told via chat and officially they have no chat support.

Since then, they've added two more sites for options that were sold out when he had asked.

Good to hear. Now I want backups on those, which is not available.
      0_1488413670255_upload-120b7ea7-c730-4960-ac86-f06395c989f6

@BRRABill and I had long discussions about why those aren't available. If you extrapolate the backup costs from their non-storage devices, the cost of backing up these VMs would easily be greater than the cost of the VMs themselves. I think that they rightfully guessed that no one would pay for that. If you want a backup of them, buy another Vultr storage VM and backup to that. Or backup to S3/B2 or something.

It would be awesome if they integrated a backup service, I agree. But it would have to be a special offering for those and I think that it makes sense that it's not offered - seems like a wise business move.

@aaronstuder said in Vultr Adds a Free Firewall Service:

Is it just me, or is Vultr killing it recently?

Are they? With Linode's improved pricing, Vultr still is trailing for us in most use cases. It's a bit too costly and a bit too slow. We just get way more bang for the buck with Linode and Linode has load balancers which I think are a bit more important than firewalls. Vultr is doing well, but killing it seems a bit far as we are migrating off in several cases because it just isn't the best value compared to it's more mature competitor any longer. It's definitely doing better than Digital Ocean these days, though.

Then, what providers support OPUS? Most only support 711 and sometimes 722.

Hence why we transcode to g722 for Skyetel. But the g722 path is from a datacenter to datacenter, so not really worried about questionable call path qualities.

Opus seems to help on everything from wifi to mobile to offices with low quality WANs. We have people on fractional T1 still, so fight some tight bandwidth battles.

Looking at the details page, here is a limitation depending on how you handle client accounts, or your own accounts.

What are the Lightsail service limits?
You can currently create up to 20 Lightsail instances, 5 static IPs, and 3 DNS domain zones in a Lightsail account.

But this is pretty cool. Ability to manage traffic before it hits your VPS:

Can I manage firewall settings for my instance?
      .
You can control the data traffic for your instances by using the Lightsail firewall. From the Lightsail console, you can set rules about which ports of your instance are publicly accessible for different types of traffic.
