We sell Carrier Services and usually size based more on the number of calls not the number of people. 30 simultaenous calls should be easy on any good (read: true business class) Internet circuit. @scottalanmiller has the bandwidth nailed on the head above. We di try and get users to get the best Upstream bandwidth which for cable modem installs around here is very difficult (Time Warner only offers 5Meg UP even in Business Class which is pathetic).
For our needs internally we needed well over 100 simultaneous call paths. We went with a dedicated circuit to a Rochester based cough carrier cough and a backup trunk over an Internet circuit. While bandwith has never been an issue lets just say I can't wait for the contract for the cough carrier to expire so that we can port and go to the Internet for our needs and dump them!

Option #1 up and running. Now to work on the OpenVPN part of the equation... 🙂

I have set this up but then ran into the problem of the OpenVPN port being blocked. Slightly hard to change once out in the wild.

      On which end?

The remote end obviously. As I have full control of the server side.

Wow, this is kind of right along the lines of what I've been researching on remote extensions...

One of the things that we routinely do is to block all non-free calling so even if our extension, PBX or platform were to be hacked, even if they gained access to our SIP trunk, they can't rack up long distance calls or whatever.

Interesting. In my situation there are no routers only a switch between my PBX and their first box. And their box is locked down to only talk to my IP.

Digging through my notes I also have a note that Cox had to switch from a Atrica to Alcatel SBC. At least that was their claim. In the end they didn't swap the box and instead made changes to the existing Atrica.

@scottalanmiller Yes... Everything works fine when I dialed in and pointed inbound route to an extension, rings and audio is perfect. Web interface, logs, Asterisk functions, modules loaded everything works fine. This is what confuses me the most. Unfortunately I cant just erase the entire server and start from scratch.

I have never heard of a provider that required a separate trunk for inbound and outbound. that is just crazy.

So, is this just a Vitelity issue? I know many SIP providers have their subtle differences, and you always seem to find them at the most inopportune moments.

I've Had similar issues. I've found on some Android smartphones turning off the "noise reduction" in the dailer app settings can help. Though it's going to make their calls noisy so I don't find it to be a great solution.

@g.jacobse no phone is useful without a PBX. How are you functioning without a PBX today? Are you paying for a 1960s Key System from the phone company?

Uhm yea - about that,...We have a onsite Nortel NorStar system at the main office,.. but I'm pretty sure it is otherwise POTS.... as it 90% of all of our remote sites. It was this way when I started last year - but I fully plan to move us into the modern world...

Nortel made PBXs, long ago. That's just an old PBX.

POTS is the outside lines, doesn't refer to the inside ones. At a minimum that's almost certainly a digital (not IP) phone system. Pretty rough, though.
