RHEL if support is required, CentOS if I'm being lazy on updates (joke); beginning to just use Fedora Server for everything not requiring support. I will probably start phasing out CentOS.

That's what we are doing. CentOS is nearly gone now. Only required for Zimbra.

Zimbra actually requires CentOS? Can't use FS? 😐

Zimbra does not require CentOS, you can also use Ubuntu which others might not like.

We mean in the context of the RPM distos. It only supports Ubuntu LTS and not current which is arguably not even a form of support since Ubuntu’s own support path can be to force you to current meaning Zimbra isn’t actually supported in that ecosystem.

Yeah, Zimbra supports Ubuntu 16.04 LTS but yeah we are almost on 18.04

Yeah. So far worse than only supporting CentOS 7 in the RPM world. At least RHEL 7 offers full support from the vendor, not partial.

You need to setup the settings to Delete or changed to not configured, wait until it applies and then delete the GPOs after confirming they are not applied any longer.

      Get-Content c:\temp\gpos.txt | foreach { Get-GPO -Name "$_" | Remove-GPO }

      http://jeffwouters.nl/index.php/2013/08/remove-group-policy-objects-through-powershell/

I bet you could do something like this to set all GPOs to "on delete remove from client" too

This assumes a txt file with all GPO names. You could also just use Get-GPO

Before you can get in to what OS to run the clients on, do you have to ask what apps the business needs to run? If they need some kind of CAD package and it's only offered on Windows, the linux client goes out the window. (pun intended)

This is missing a few: Protected access for admin over all files & PC's, Visuals (graphs) , Easy to use interface.

Here is what I have so far for important features outside of the standard. Do you guys see anything that is more important than another?

      Anything I'm missing completely?

This list is not complied by priority, however it needs to be ( my Boss asked me to make a list) so any / all input would be greatly appreciated.

Not legal. You can't legally use Windows Server for production purposes without it being licensed.

Also I dont see any licensing options for file server role, FYI.

It's not a role. To license the use of any non-hypervisor functionality the license is a full Windows Server license.

Well, I'm glad that's been cleared up. You can probably delete the thread now 🙂

I don't even know what the original thread was!

And that is why you have no concept of what you posted being completely wrong for the context of the thread.

Honestly, it is pretty straight forward if you read the first post.
      https://mangolassi.it/topic/13595/out-of-band-management-does-it-mean-no-keyboard-at-all

The first post also contains links back to the thread that @DustinB3403 pulled this from.

I was responding the post quoted, though.

Which was in the context of the entire thread. If you want to cherry pick something, then clearly, state as much. You did not.

Start with old Desktop with Virtualization extension, something that you can install OS and dont have to remove cause of free space or you need it for something else.

Cause learning Linux or Centos or anything else needs environment, and virtualbox can work but it wont allow you play with KVM, and thats for me the big part of the fun.

Also you need to keep learning that means its is process some day you will leave it 4-5 days dormat cause your stuck in an issue the other day bulb lights up mainly due to reading this site and you get back on it.

@scottalanmiller just a question (sw not hw) why veeam rather than say.. altaro. Just curious!

There is no backup software on this device. It is a storage target. One assumes that @scottalanmiller will be using some base OS that lets you setup basically any type of connectivity.

Ok! Got it wrong! Thanks for clarifying

Its a nice concept, but unless you can purchase more than 2 chassis for ultimate redundancies, your eggs are still in one basket, shared with the storage.

But in IT, eggs in one basket is a good thing, not a bad one. It's better to have your storage in the same basket as your servers, even when doing an IPOD. The worst option is to separate them.

Just a switch, not a server, but it was 12-15 meters above the ground on a steel construction for a 50t indoor crane. Lots of oil and dust, no railing and a dozen pigeons right above me.

Freaking experience. Did I mention that I'm a bit acrophobic? At least at 10 meters and above 😉

I know a guy who built his own blade unit. Wooden blade enclosure and some simply power supplies and his own fans, then made it allow straight motherboards to slide in so that it make having a handful of systems running in a cluster super cheap. Pointless for production, but for a lab was very interesting.
