@scottalanmiller said in MongoDB Major Change to Licensing:

if you are a SaaS vendor looking at building software that uses MongoDB somewhere, you'd better get a lawyer looking over this license and how it applies to you.

This is becoming a bigger issue as the biggest SaaS vendors hide behind this clause more and more with incredibly proprietary forks. They offer very little to no actual core development or contribution and it goes against the previous method of GPL code getting funding.

It annoys me, as the legal headaches of contributing internal only use code back will block some companies from using OSS, but I see it both ways.

The startups who are doing a lot of the core housekeeping of NOSQL platforms are learning they can't find a business model. This is getting messier and messier.

Partially because there are just too any vendors involved.

What's amazing, though, is that a move like this took a customer who was very into MongoDB and using it in projects and was literally working with MongoDB's own hosted product and now looking to avoid it like the plague.

So at least in this one case, they are likely losing hosted product from this. And gaining nothing. I imagine a lot of customers going through this same process.

@scottalanmiller not so limited. I do both linux and win devel. Win in vm is a pita so you run win bare metal and use linux in vm. Then you grown bored of setting up samba for sharing between vm and host, fire the vm on 1 screen and have another os in the other screen and so on. Now I just fire wsl from win menu and I go. It is simply more seamless to me.

When you say you develop on both, you develop the same things on both, or different things on both?

I share between systems via GIT.

No I've customers asking for linux stuff and other customers asking for win stuff.

What causes the need for the Samba shares between them, then? Seems like you'd just keep them disconnected.

While all end in a git service (bitbucket) having code sparse in 2 machines and duplicated tools is not something I like. So I prefer to keep eveything in 1 place use 1 editor and share sources/compiled code to run it. With wsl this is smooth and fast. Not having to devel for win would be a big win.

      That's what I do, I just don't do Windows 😉

Free, but not sure about open source... LibreOffice Draw works well. Inkscape is worth checking out; typically a vector graphics tool, but also has some PDF editing capabilities.

I've used Foxit PhantomPDF across a few clients, and have had some issues with the driver just randomly experiencing issues when trying to print to PDF or to a printer. So, just a heads up. But their price is very attractive. As @JaredBusch also pointed out, PDf Element is a good alternative at a slightly lower cost than Foxit PhantomPDF (roughly $30).

Fedora is better for active IT departments that maintain their systems. CentOS is better for companies that deploy and never maintain their systems and just hope for the best 😉

I just wonder your statement here on CentOS, while I have seen you always praise CentOS than Ubuntu. Is that praise just about CentOS vs Ubuntu ?

So your whole interest on Fedora is because it have Latest things and faster development ?

Well I have downloaded Inkscape but haven't had occasion to use it much.

If you have other graphics programs to recommend I'm all ears.

Personally I really like the Corel products, they seem much more straight forward to use than PS. So I'm definitely not stuck on the PS side of things.
      I'm definitely a causal user

I prefer Inkscape if I can do it. Vector is so much easier to work with than raster.

Inkscape is awesome. Loads of professional work is done in that.

Cost is an issue? Assuming you got hosted SharePoint only I think it's $4/u/m...

      Tiny capacity, though.

      1 TB per user?

That's ODfB. The Sharepoint storage proper is like 100MB.

      OMG, that's near useless!

It's only for documents. Goes a long way when used as intended.

Used as intended? That's a joke, right? Storing large PDFs should be a part of the intention. DWG files can be huge.
