New Ubiquiti Unifi Switches

We are talking about getting one of the switches for here (Dallas) because we need more switching capacity and it would be a perfect opportunity to test it out. We only need PoE for the tiniest bit (two access points, two or three phones) so the new switches are perfect.

@thwr Looks like a yes, according to the site. The only way it could get any better would be if they made similar models with POE that would integrate into the UniFi Controller bits.
Would be awesome if they would support some sort of stacking, either soft stacking / logical stacking or "hard stacking" with a traditional daisy chain. Need to buy 4x48 port access switches soon. Just Layer 2, but I will need POE and would love to have a single console to manage them.

Yeah. It's the same software that runs / manages all of the UnFi enabled gear. It's mainly for the APs, though.
Uhm, really? So if I got 4x 48 port access switches + 2 APs I could manage them all from a single point?
But only if you get THESE switches... And these don't have PoE.
again with the not knowing what you are talking about... Did you bother to even check the Ubiquiti website?
Is it not easier to just show me a link that has the PoE switches on it?
I'd certainly love to be more familiar with the Ubiquiti stuff, but I don't have my hands on any of their gear at the moment. I am going by what I have seen others on here say.
Our complaint in the past is that they only had PoE.

UniFi, we have Edge in the datacenter already and like it a lot. Have not been able to play with the UniFi switches yet, only the APs.

UniFi, we have Edge in the datacenter already and like it a lot. Have not been able to play with the UniFi switches yet, only the APs.
Then the recently announced, but not yet easily obtained, UniFi 8 port 150W would be perfect.

Yes, the base hardware is similar (but not exactly the same) from EdgeMax to UniFi.
EdgeMax is more carrier grade in the design concept.
UniFi is the central managed point and click Meraki concept.
Interesting. Will have a look. Noticed that the UniFi Switches don't have SFP+ ports, that may be a showstopper for my specific use case. But I also don't want to spend like 2-4k EUR per access switch, that's why I'm still looking for options.
The point is: I do have a 10G uplink (dark fiber) at that site. It's planned as a shared research lab and all parties there will have their own little server cabinet. Need to bring at least a little bandwith to each party. A bit hard to explain.

Yes, UniFi would remind you of Meraki, but you host your own controller and don't have to deal with an annual charge for owning the gear.
The UniFi line is also more limited in functionality than EdgeMax when it comes to the routers. I have not compared the switches.
I don't care about any routers, I'm a pfSense junky

I don't believe this to be true. If it's limited it's because of errors in the current firmware on the USG. Is it as easy to manage as the EdgeRouters? not really because you have to split your setup between GUI and config files depending on how advanced your setup is.
A firmware bug they had in the past was that you couldn't setup the client VPN when you had static IP enabled on the USG. I've heard that this has been fixed, but haven't gone back and changed the install I have to confirm.
I believe that the Unifi is designed to be equal to the EdgeRouter series in capabilities - but again, firmware bugs have and might still be causing differences.

What's peoples view on EdgeSwitches? Looking at revamping the Server room here which will include 3-4 new switches being needed.

I've got various EdgeSwitches in production, the only reason why I went for Edge over Unifi was because there were ONLY POE versions of the Unifi switches for double the price.
Now that the Unifi non POE line is out, That's what I'll put in if the performance/features are the same.

The main problem I see with that is that the Unifi switches will require the Unifi Controller to manage them, typically. I think they can be managed by CLI, but I don't think that's the intention.

But that's exactly why you'd want them. No other reason. If you want stand alone, don't touch Unifi gear from for any of their products.
