Gaming rig for friend
-
OK, so my friend has asked me to build a gaming rig for him.. Budget is about $2,000.. Any thoughts on specs/parts to use? All I know he wants water cooling, nice case, and to play WOW and OverWatch. I don't really game, so I have no clue.. And I haven't built a machine from the ground up in a while.

That's plenty of money. I have an awesome gaming laptop from Asus for half of that.

These days I like Intel i7 for the CPU and NVidia for the GPU. You'll want 16GB RAM or more, but 16GB is good.

for 2000 bucks, you can get just about whatever you want.
If you want to spend the entire 2k,
 get a
 GTX1080 ~700
 the i7 6700 (although I still prefer the socket 2011 beasts, like the 4930k) ~350 I think
 16/32GB RAM, this is cheap. ~ 300
ASUS or Gigabyte mobo that is comparable in features/price with your cpu.(prob about 3-400 for something good) ~ 300-400
 A case and a psu about 100 each. ~ 200

Don't forget cooling, and enclosures... Very essential !!

No personal preference included here. For example, I'm not a big fan of ASUS. PS: There are decent gaming notebooks available, @scottalanmiller mentioned them before.

Hey Guys, Hope you had a good weekend.. Here is what I have so far.. Trying to figure out on some of the parts if I can use a lower model. He doesn't care about looks, as it's not for showing off. And his price includes monitor, KB, Mouse, Speakers.... Appreciate your guys help. Sorry I am so dumb at this stuff.. haha... I don't build much anymore, and I don't game, so I don't know what's good. MSI Z170A - Not sure if he really needs this high end of one.. I would like to get something a little cheaper. i7-6700K - Proc Only (getting water cooling unit) Kingston HyperX FURY - Got 16, might go 32 Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD OR Samsung Evo 500GB - is it really worth the $60 difference? Corsair Hydro H100iv2 240mm water cooler - Hope this is the right one.. It looks like it to me. EVGA 500W OR Corsair AX AX760 760W - Can I get by with 500W or is there a good one anyone can recommend? $150 is kind of steep. He may add another GFX card later, but only 1 for now.. I have no clue how multiple cards would work together anyway.. Never researched it or used it. Cooler Master Trooper Case OR NZXT H440 Case - I like the Cooler Master, but for the $50 difference, I think the NZXT case will be fine. Asus VS228H 21.5 OR Samsung S245E310HL 23.6" -- I would prefer the Samsung personally. He will be getting 2, for dual screen. Mackie Monitors - he likes these, I don't know the difference between monitor and seaker

Might I recommend you using this website, if you aren't certain. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/pcbuilder/ Also that site will list the best prices for the parts and where to purchase them from.

I have the same watercooler, works great. Also have the same 850 Pro SSD, works even better.
I suppose you don't have to spend so much on the mobo, but I usually do because it is the foundation of your entire computer. The one you have chosen may be a bit overkill(though mine was more and is totally worth it), perhaps find one with only 2 pciex16 if he may want another card in the future. butThe one listed by thwr is a lot more than the spreadsheet says it is, at least in the US. And is MiniITX.
6700K are over 300 in the US, not less than 250 as well

Thanks guys... The site @DustinB3403 looks good.. I thought NewEgg was free shipping for Continental US, guess not anymore.. And return policy, thats why I want to get things sold and ship from Amazon. Never had issues with Amazon returns. Ill keep the SSD as the 850 Pro, as I had great luck with my 840 Pro . I rather spend the money from the MB on going 32GB ram for him... and trying to get screens with 1ms response vs 5..
-
Well, this is what I got so far.. A little over his budget... lol.. Just playing with setup for now.. I will probably switch the MB to the model under the titanium.. $70 cheaper. and then switch the gfx to a non liquid cooled one. figure out where else I can cut.. Prob will have to cut the screens down, not sure how much of a difference getting the samsung screens vs these ASUS ones will be.

Standard HD on a screen that large, personally I would hate it during non gaming things.

@Dashrender said in Gaming rig for friend: Standard HD on a screen that large, personally I would hate it during non gaming things. He only uses it for gaming and very little internet (usually just uses his phone). So might not be a huge issue.. Would the Samsung be ok for gaming? Or better to get the faster refresh rate/resolution on the ASUS. It would be for Overwatch/WoW/CoD, so not sure if response time in the screen is that big of an issue. Thanks so much guys, Appreciate your help..
