They're just individual client based. You can deploy the software and all via your favorite method, but you still have to join the devices to your ZT network, and that requires some manual labor on the controller. ZT Won't let a device on your network unless you authorize it in the controller (generally their web site).

      I like that.

How does ZeroTier handle updates? Are they just individual client based or can you use something similar to WSUS to update it?

Is it possible to use this in conjunction with a File Server to provide an alternative means of accessing and also provide domain authentication or am I way off base here?

That is pretty much what ZeroTier is for. The easiest way to use it though, is an all-or-nothing approach. Every computer runs it (AD Domain Controller, DNS servers, Workstations, Laptops). Otherwise, you get fun issues with DNS returning wrong IP addresses.

You mean even domain connected workstations? Is this just for mapping purposes?

Pretty much, yes. There are other ways you can do it and not have to install ZT on everybody's computer... but it can muddy the waters a bit.

If ZeroTier is linux compatible I wonder if you could turn a Raspberry Pi into an external NIC kind of like external hp jet direct cards.

Update: Oh my god they even have it for Rasbian.

      They do? Nice!

I know they have binaries for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android. You can build it yourself on other platforms (*BSD, and a few others).

Building from source isn't too bad on Linux.

Whenever I have a free minute I'm going to make this into a project. I just wish the Raspi were POE compatible.

Like @wirestyle22 linked you, all you need to make a Raspi PoE is a converter on the Pi's end.

I've seen them but have no experience with them. Have you done this yourself?

NTG was doing a pretty elaborate SDWan by 2001 with dedicated hardware at every site and home.

These days, if you want this, often the best choices are things like ZeroTier and Pertino.

Do you need any hardware for ZeroTier? It's entirely done through software? I might use this for my single PC group homes. My company won't buy any new hardware for them unless things break.

ZeroTier is totally done in software. It does require a computing device (PC or Mac). It won't work on Switches and Printers.

Even if you're printing using something like Tricerat Screwdrivers?

Why would anyone go through the effort of making headphones that specifically combine certain frequencies into monaural. that would suck.

To make you feel off balance when the bass hits only on one side.

I'm not sure how it all works but I can tell you the sound quality is great. They have gaming profiles too like FPS footsteps which are crazy when I'm playing Rainbow Six Siege--a game heavily revolving around information of where your enemy is. I wish I knew more about what it's like to manage a gaming server. Ubisoft's servers are the absolute worst I've ever seen though. They're like the new EA.

Oh that's a conversation we can have. If you guys were making a network closet at home how would you cool it?

I would cool it ambiently and save money on my heating bills. Nothing says "I work in IT" like a server rack in your living room.

Or a 13U rack under your desk at home. Man, I gotta remember to check out Northeast Factory Direct, bet I could pickup one for cheap.

13U is almost the perfect height for an ottoman. Just saying.

I've been thinking of building one of these but my wife would kill me. At our next house I'm going to build a data closet.

      Score 1 for bachelor life.

My wife works in IT. She's helped to cable the house before.

When I said I wanted to put a drop in every room, my wife said, "Isn't that what wireless is for?"

My wife and I had a discussion yesterday about needing to carrying Ethernet cabling with us when we travel because we want to improve speed and reliability for stuff in the house and not overload the wireless like we have been.

      Bring two APs?

      Still wifi and wifi sucks.

Fair... but it may be better then having to crowd around a switch.

The kind of havoc that someone could cause just from making a DIY 2.4GHz AV transmitter. I was thinking about trolling my friend and installing one behind his dresser just for giggles but he moved to Texas.

Just remember to not cycle any of the servers during you favorite TV show,...

I'd probably have an electrician friend come over and install a dedicated line for me. Friendship is a wonderful thing.

Dedicated AC unit. Not kidding, actually did that. Put in a half rack as well as a small wall mounted network rack. UPS, servers and storage went on the floor rack. Firewall, switches, patch panels on the wall mount one.

Room was closed off and was windowless. @art_of_shred installed a floor standing dedicated AC unit that vented directly to the outside. Worked great.

Interesting. Do you know what AC unit was used?
