    • RE: ASA 5505 Public IP Address Conundrum - Cisco Gurus Welcome

      I was gonna write up a big thing about this, but there is a easy [moderated] way to handle this.

      Put a switch between the modem and the firewall. Hang another firewall off the switch using the "new" IP. Since you don't plan on the two networks communicating, no point in making things convoluted in your config. That would be easy as hell.

      And if you want to be able to talk to ether network locally, just jumper a cable between them and use some quick static routes to frame traffic.

      No muss, no fuss.

      All of these facts are backed up by nothing.

      Damn it dude, now I want pancakes.

    • RE: Cloud services - what are they - REALLY?

      "Cloud" is such a freakin' buzzword now it's mostly impossible to define. And I work for a "cloud" company.

      It's like people confounding what "broadband" means by defining it by speed. Broadband, as a term, came about because it uses a BROAD BAND of frequencies to transmit data, things like the higher frequencies used by ADSL that we can't hear but are transmitted over the wire.

      If you RDP to it straight from the internet, no, not really.

      If you VPN into the network, pull the gateway off the thing. It won't be able to get to the internet but will be seen in the local network.

      From the standpoint of the law, I an not a tenant.

      Are you over 18, have any kind of agreement about living there and have been there over 30 days? Then you are a tenant, even if you don't pay a single dime.

      Tenancy laws are very specific, especially in New York.

      Usually it isn't immediate life or death. Yes over the long term it will shorten your life and make you die of a heart attack, but usually you've been living with it for a while before you even get diagnosed.

      There are some possible negative side effects, such as having the pressure too high and causing central apnea.

      The thing you have to remember is that you and I, Scott, are 3+ standard deviations above the mean intelligence, so we're perfectly capable of purchasing and setting up our own system. The other 99.9% of people aren't that smart 🙂

      I just bought an HP Proliant ML10. Only 239 bucks on Newegg. Had to spend another $180 for some ECC RAM, but meh. My previous test box was my old AMD quad core machine. Although I could stack it with RAM cheaper, I forget how good it is to have a decent actual server in the house. Using out of band tools made things a lot easier to setup, iLO/DRAC is a necessary thing. 🙂

    • RE: Pros/Cons Dual Best Effort ISP vs Fiber/MPLS.

      The more you mention the situation you are in, the more it smells like you need to get out of the closet and into the datacenter!

      Get cheap crap pipes, move yer shit into a colo cage somewhere. That comes with a 100Mbps or even a 1Gbps Cogent unmetered pipe out to the interwebs. Have both sites VPN into it using as best as you can. I would take me a Peplink, break out a VPN connection to the colo, then route all the HTTP/HTTPS traffic over the cheapest pipe I can find.

      Price on pipes and such would probably equal out on onsite versus offsite for a colo cage. That's when you move into the fun of counting power costs, cooling costs, even equipment costs if you move to a leased managed hosting model versus owning equipment. Then you will get good savings there in the long run.

      As long as you can let go of the control of the physical machine, you can make some serious inroads into better network management. Hell, have you thought about cloud services? Don't even need a location, just be in the clooooooooooooooooud!

    • RE: Backup to Magnetic Tape and LTO7 Thoughts

      Totally depends on what kind of backup scheme is needed.

      Had a 42U tape library in each of the DCs back at the big red V. The system had 8 drives and the ability to hold well over 2 months of tapes. We still had bottlenecks with regards to streaming data to them. But we were a multi-tenant environment, backing up hundreds of customers.

      For these small shops, tape makes sense for compliance issues. To keep backups offsite easily and with less of a chance for catastrophe. A nice D2D2T system will cover most everyone's needs.

      @Shuey said in SQL Administration Woes:

      I've heard legendary tales of SysAdmins who have done SQL backups all for free, but I'm still way out of my league on this topic, so I'd like some advice if possible...

      ANy good SQL DBA can setup maintenance plans to handle indexing, cleanup, backups, etc. all from within SQL server.

      Any good SQL DBA CAN do all that, but I'm not a SQL DBA, lol. So I either gotta pay somebody to take care of it, or I gotta hope I can learn and implement it while I'm in the interim (and hope it doesn't all go south during that time) :-S.

      https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187510.aspx

      USE <<DATABASE>>;
      GO
      BACKUP DATABASE <<DATABASE>>
      TO DISK = '<<PATH.BAK>>'
      WITH FORMAT,
      MEDIANAME = 'Full_<<DATABASE>>',
      NAME = 'Full Backup';
      GO

      Run as SQL job, done.

      That will be $500 for DBA work. 😉

    • RE: Equipment decisions

      One of the main reasons I was thinking Cisco was due to the ability to get in SFPs to hook into anything I needed. Core switches, straight fiber into my servers, who knows what I could do.

      The Mikrotik gear has multiple SFPs plus switching gear to handle anything. So jacking into my Cisco gear over fiber is a snap, or I can go up to 10G and get real hard core.

      One of these:

      http://routerboard.com/CCR1009-8G-1S

      And one of these:

      http://routerboard.com/CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN

      I can run anything at that setup, it will never choke on bandwidth. Time to whip out the AMEX, I've got a purchase to make.
