At this point 2148 feels a little ambitious.

I'm hoping there's quantum communications by then. Thinking IP will be around then still I think is an under-estimation.

      Perhaps TCP/QP 😄

@IRJ We are discussing this option. We will likely do both a live stream and a live event once the all clear has been issued.

That makes sense. I would like to see it opened up to more people that could attend. It will really cut costs, and of course avoid all the issues we will obviously have for the next several months (at minimum).

Could there be a meetup separate from the conference? I dont see why the two have to be connected especially considering the circumstances.

Kinda hard to get your company to pay for a meetup that has no technical content, etc.

Most places are offering their virtual conferences free right now. My Hashicorp conference in October is been switched to virtual they are refunding my money and offering it free virtual since the only real overhead is paying their employees to present via Zoom session. Redhat did the same thing as did many others like KnowBe4 and HITRUST.

If there was a cost for a virtual mangocon, I would assume it would be minimal.

All that makes sense, though not sure what it has to do with my quoted post about getting a company to pay for a meetup that wasn't around a conference with content?

Why do you need your company to pay for it if it's virtual? That was my point.

OH - I guess I don't see a meetup as a virtual thing, I assumed you meant a later in person meetup.

It seems like best case scenario for in person meetup is probably in the fall, but even many conferences are canceling then.

Wish you guys the best of luck in your new(ish) endeavor.

Thanks. Yeah, we are pushing hard. We just released a free video conferencing service for them as well (shows our logo while they use it.) It's not so useful for regular telemedicine, but for those that need an ad hoc meeting system, we are offering that, too.

      With dick shirts?

How did this happen is the real question? 😂😂😂😂

      This had to be intentional?

It was intentional, I was just sad I missed it.

Whats the joke? We're dicks? 😂😂😂

The joke was that the shirt had a questionably shaped object as the main center piece of the shirt. I didn't even feel comfortable wearing it around my kids. 🙂 Right @scottalanmiller @Dominica ?

Will this also be available after the conference (in video or audio) for those of us who might have used the topics covered to convince their boss (CFO) to go to MC?

That is the intention, and the people (cough MQ cough) who blocked that in the past are no longer involved. The primary focus of the conference, beyond the opportunity for socialization in person, is the production of the video materials, so there will be a strong focus on making sure that those come out and are available.

      🙂

And for those of us too far to make it there.

This is a good reason to have more than one credit card from more than one bank.

This isn't just a credit issue though. It's people literally unable to access their own money, not money on credit. More so if people have the money in their checking/savings account to pay their bills why should they have to pay their bills on credit?!

The bank had better pay off any interest if their customers had to use a credit card to pay for anything during this time to get things back to Zero.

Physical vs. Virutal fax - Which is more secure?

@pchiodo said in Physical vs. Virutal fax - Which is more secure?:

What is happening is a migration to digital/online faxing solutions that offer encrypted transmission, secure retrieval, and secure portals.

In my situation, I can't do a thing about eliminating faxes, but what I can do is require they be done using secure methods. Online digital fax solutions, like eFax, goldfax, etc... can bridge this gap, and let me do away with the physical fax machine. My only problem is making a case for this migration with those that hold the purse strings.

Easy to quantify economically, but much harder to convey the security issues and still ensure day to day operations.

All of that doesn't get you up to unencrypted email security levels, though. Time to start firing insecure vendors putting employees at risk because they can't be bothered to meet the most minimum security standards.

I often point out to people discussion Windows and Linux that they often do a cost comparison and figure that they are pretty close... but leave out licensing which is by far the biggest cost and risk of windows. They forget the time and risk in determining needs, record keeping, upkeep, monitoring, audits, fines, etc.

The solution to removing them and re-establishing the vSwitch and VM Adapters was to remove the Hyper-V Role and then reinstall the role.
      Specifically the following steps:

Where you using a Full server install that you added the role to? or are you actually able to remove the Hyper-V role from Hyper-V server 2012 (or whatever version you were on?)

He has Server 2012 R2 Datacenter installed on all their physical boxes.

@scottalanmiller said in When management uses IT to solve people problems:

I say this constantly. So often IT seems to be used (or feels like it should be) acting as some kind of weird HR department that works by disabling functionality rather than addressing employee problems. And when you ask why IT doesn't do what HR should do, they don't have the authority. When asked why HR doesn't fix the problem, we are told that HR doesn't care (which means that management doesn't care.) Which makes me wonder... why does IT care when the business does not?

But IT doesn't care, in these case IT's just doing what management told them to do.

Actually, most of the time when I see this, IT cares way, way too much. There are times when it is just foolish management, but very rarely do I actually see that without IT at least encouraging it if not doing it unilaterally.

OK I'll admit I used to be guilty of that, but much less so these days.
