    • RE: First Look at the Scale

how is the windows server performance on Scale HC using KVM? Considering it uses VirtIO drivers by default for both disk and network.

Is there a driver install package that runs on the guest OS? I asked these questions during the webinar and was honestly never given a straight answer beyond - it integrates and works...

For a linux guest OS, I know, typically the VirtIO disk and VirtIO network adaptor would provide best performance (in most cases). However, on windows its different. But I suppose, that with the disks being local to the nodes; the performance is essentially nearly same as a non guest OS?

Also have dropbox on mac mini server to push data to dropbox cloud storage. So serve as back-up point and all global access if needed.

probably going with Drobo unit with 5 drives + mSata SSD drive for SSD Caching. As would be just straight TB connection and drive volume(s) be attached.

Waiting to finalize their network setup and their new office build-out prior to moving forward.

    • RE: I am an OS Junkie

A close friend of mine use to swear by Gentoo. I would roll my eyes. Yes Portage is cool and very powerful. However, having to compile everything needed for the system along with setting flags? Some shit could take a day or longer to compile. I would always ask him WHY? You'll shave what maybe a few seconds off some application launch times?

When most other distro's could be setup in far less time and use already set packages. Although, while he had a gentoo desktop; I was running a FreeBSD desktop.. so I guess to each their own.

    • RE: I am an OS Junkie

I was OS junkie for Linux distro's at one point in time. But I can say they've all matured over the past few years; become little more 'mainstream' and user friendly

Most debian OS's are pretty much all the same.

I'm a big fan of OpenSUSE and PointLinux

Was using SolydX for awhile - but after recent updates and changes.. not anymore.

Just apears as if have to install as Virtual Machine inside your XenServer Pool (on one of the nodes). At first glance, I thought could possibly install this XO on a cloud hosted instance and it could push/pull that way. Otherwise, still relying on an 'inside source' for the Pool/cluster management.

    • RE: BackBlaze - Business Options Available

Need to re-think the site, makes me look stupid? Idk.

says TRY NOW, NO CREDIT CARD REQUIRED!!!! and then... no pricing model/structure

I called about a month ago as a customer of mine was looking for a business backup option... called and spoke with a rep. said their new CEO was cutting options and making it ONLY for enterprise as small business wasnt generating enough revenue. so we ended convo

Said it had to be over so many seats. As I just wanted a single server and XXX amount of data to backup. Did not want to help me. So carbonite, again received my business.

I tried getting a new CrashPlan account for a customer of mine.

I was told that their new CEO (Crashplan) was doing away with Small Business backups and was only supporting enterprise.. WTF?

So had to pay more for Carbonite Online server backup $899 per year.

    • RE: Hairpin routing

I use name.local here myself... works fine

      I just create A-records

to do internal DNS-A record within Windows Server DNS, there is a guide out there

Essentially need to create an internal DNS A-Record to point to the internal IP address of the own cloud server.

Then on the domain Registrar website; create an external DNS A-record and point it to your External WAN address 12.12.12.12 as given in example.

Be sure to have appropriate firewall rule and port forwarding configured to accept traffic on interface for 12.12.12.12 and redirect the requests on destination ports to the internal owncloud IP address

    • RE: Mac Mini as OSX Server + GlobalSan iSCSI

      Cool, thank you scott!

per Drobo documentation. You can create multiple Volumes on the Raid array. However, once the volume(s) are created. You cannot delete just one(1) of them. Documentation states, if you need to remote one of the Volumes. The entire unit has to be formatted and start over.

Nearly non issue. Although, then I question how you can Expand or a Volume previously created or shift space around.

The larger Drobo 8000 rack unit looks sweet. Be cool if that supported thunderbolt add-on PCI-e card.
