So i put the DBAN CD into a usb optical drive, and it does boot on these macbooks, and I can unplug it when it starts and move over to the next one. So it's working kind of like a thumb drive. So I guess that'll have to do.

Takes about 3 minutes of tech time to setup for each of them. Not too sure I could do any better with a different approach.

Yeah, but the company that is buying them from us probably won't pay top dollar for them if they are beat to hell with a baseball bat.

    • Quickest way to wipe 200+ Macbooks

      Hi Guys,

I need a "quick" way to wipe 200+ macbooks. The ideal solution would be to boot them from a thumb drive and have them launch a HDD wipe with little to no interaction from the tech (a single are you sure type thing would be ok). Then when the process starts we'd pull the thumb drive and boot the next one.

It does not have to be super wiped, a single pass of a format like command would be just fine.

I tried DBAN on them, and while I can get the CD to boot, I cannot get a thumb drive to boot at all. And with the CD you cannot eject it till after it's done, which is less than ideal.

I found a software called Disk Wiper, which works, but it take 5+ minutes to get it going, multiply that by 200+ and we'd be spending way too much time clicking things to get this done.

      Thanks in advance!

EDIT: These are White Unibody macbooks that we are retiring and selling to a third party. We need out data off of them before they take them, though a "light" erase would be fine, we don't need any sort of DoD erasing. Trying to minimize the time spent on each laptop, as adding a single minute to the process makes the entire job take 3 - 4 extra hours of tech time.

    • Good step by step for setting up a Radius Server and LDAPS

      Hey guys,

Anyone have a link to a good step by step for setting up a Server 2012 R2 Radius server? The only ones I could find (admittedly this was a few months ago) were for Server 2008 or 2003.

I could also use on on how to setup LDAPs (LDAP over SSL) for Server 2012 R2 as well.

Possibly. But it also could have just been a knee jerk reaction from the boss.

Knee jerk reaction to fire the innocent party to cover up his own mistakes. Sure.

You can't see how someone who is completely panicked about the situation, frantically trying to work out what to do would not suddenly focus that negative energy on the person they perceive as the either the cause or a solid scape goat? Stress was through the roof, so it's understandable that someone could do what that boss guy did in the heat of the moment.

Not saying it's right, guy is an asshole and a shitty leader for just his reaction alone, just saying it's understandable on some levels.

Possibly. But it also could have just been a knee jerk reaction from the boss. Who know, perhaps they called him the next day, apologized, recanted the firing and asked him to return. Even so, I would not go back if I were him. Or at least not for any longer than it would take to find another job.

I'd not go so far as to say they faked the mistake. But the certainly did set him up for failure by having actual admin credentials in their example in the manual that they mandated he work through.

Yeah, if he decides not to go back, then he definitely needs to name them somewhere. I am sure local papers would be interested in the story. Though he should make sure that doing so does not expose him to legal action.

If he wanted to he could sue for his job back I'm sure.

They don't want to work for this company, no one does. If they are going handle such a reasonably understandable mistake in this manner I shudder to think how' they'd handle bigger issues. I mean, he could find himself charged with trespassing if he's 5 min late.

So the dude followed the instructions a little to closely and was fired due the results of that. F that noise. Not his fault at all.

No backup to restore? Also, not his fault.

Legal action against him, not bloody likely. If anything he has a case against them for wrongful termination.

Still with that much incompetence going around, and a supervisor who is gonna fire you rather than educate you and/or put the blame where it actually belongs, I think the guy is way better off staying fired and looking for a job at a company.

    • RE: Audiobooks

The "free" audible with Prime is very limited in scope, you'd have to subscribe to the full Audible to get audiobooks.

That said I drive, like a lot, 2 hours each way to work everyday. And audio books are a big part of what keeps me sane. If I went the audible way then I would be bankrupt pretty quickly.

Libraries are a good place to get audio books, but I still go through them faster than I can get them, though most libraries have online digital checkout options for audio books, so check with your local library on that.

When all else fails I torrent audio books. I belong to a private torrent community that does nothing but audio books. It has come in very handy.

I really wish someone would start a Netflix type audiobook service, and all you can listen to flat rate service.

    • RE: Laptop Recommendations for Ubuntu 17 w/ Cinnamon UI.

      @black3dynamite

That maybe the ticket. The Onyx has everything I'd want, for about the same price as the lower price 15" MBP, it just lacks Thunderbolt, which would mean my docking station is not going to work.

Do they make any decent USB 3.0 docking stations that can drive 2 displays (one 2560x1140, the other at 1080p) give me a few standard USB ports and an ethernet port?

      @JaredBusch

Simply put it is the distro I am most comfortable with, and matches all my Linux kernel based servers (they are all Ubuntu Server).

It is a pretty big shift for me to go from Windows/Mac to Linux so my I'd like to keep some of my comfort zone in tact for now. A year from now I may very well switch distros.

    • Laptop Recommendations for Ubuntu 17 w/ Cinnamon UI.

      Hi Guys,

I am finally going to make the switch from OS X to Ubuntu on my main daily drive (for work and home). I plan to run it with Cinnamon.

So can anyone suggest a laptop that matches most of the following (in no particular order):

      • 15" High res display, at least 1440p
      • Has a Thunderbolt 2 port (for my doc) and HDMI out.
      • Something with enough CPU power to run Cinnamon flawlessly
      • Good battery life, preferably something that can get me around 4 or 5 hours of life on a charge.
      • Be hardware compatible with Ubuntu in specific and the linux core in general (ie other distros).
      • It does not have to be "ultra-portable" or super light, but I'd rather it not be one of those desktop replacement models that weigh as much as a desktop, I will be travelling with it.

Mostly this machine will be used to run Chrome (Chromium) and a typical set of network admin tools. On the personal side it'd be used for YouTube and Netflix for video, I do not plan to do any gaming on it.

Budget wise, it'd need to be something comparable to the current 15" Macbook Pros, so under $2k or so.

Some google searches lead me to some nice looking laptops, but they always seem to be 13" or smaller displays or only 1080p, or weight an absolute tone. So is there anything you guys think I am leaving out? What make/models do you suggest?

You might be able to force the running DC to assume all the roles. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816779(v=ws.10).aspx

Once you do this, you'll need to do a cleanup of the AD and remove the dead controller. Once all of that is done you can then bring up a new server and promote it to a DC.
