And... you'd need a database to track the databases!

Actually, as I think about it, separating databases really just becomes semantics. As long as it is a single application, separating the databases adds overhead (mostly for the developers) but in reality, it is always still all one datastore. One way or another, the application has to behave essentially the same no matter which way you do it.

The one advantage to having them separate is that you can have different "versions" for different customers. But I'm not sure that that is a good thing.

@travisdh1 Who/what is in charge of "controlling" all those users & their access?

      ownCloud.

I assumed the users will access more than oC even though the drawing doesn't show that?

      Ah, well that's different then.

I should've just labeled the server as "Services" instead of "OwnCloud"

Did you at least find one compelling feature?

      Not yet.

Type 3: Users (are contractors), they connect via VPN from overseas

Seems like a bad idea. Usually employees are given VPN access from company owned devices. a VPN is too much exposure for non-company owned devices and for people who aren't full employees. I would look into some other form of access, RD Gateway with RDS or Ctirix etc for these people.

Are you saying access via ZT is not a good idea?

Correct. ZT is a VPN. VPNs from arbitrary devices is normally a bad idea. The only exception to this is when you would have happily exposed the LAN to the Internet and this is purely a handy control of IP addresses. If security is your goal, you are bypassing security using a VPN in this role. VPNs are very dangerous because they are about exposure.

The whole trusted network issue. LAN vs LAN-less

As more and more things move to networks that are not local to our computers, we're changing seeing how we trust things.

Traditionally we trust machines that are on our local LAN, but, if flip that on its ear and trust nothing, and always setup authenticated/trusted communications no matter where device is in comparison to us, then we are much safer.

I think that it is beyond time that we stop trusting machines on our local lan. Even my home network has the service discovery disabled, and each machine has its firewall turned on for that very reason.

I go back and forth on using the home networking features that Windows has these days.

I use them because they are there. I also have linux boxes at my house too, so there's that. 😄

No, the nearest discussed location is near NYC. There are no datacenter colo facilities worth discussing in upstate NY.

whoops, figured it'd be at your hq

That's where it is now. Moving to colo soon.

It is possible. I just checked in the community and noticed something in the build that somebody else did. They had a separate management interface.

My system currently has only 1 ethernet interface and the zt0 interface... Time for more testing, lol.

It's still full VDI. VDI existed long before the modern concept of VDI specific tools. This is all that VDI used to be.

I've never understood how viruii got around AV products on machines running them. It's my understanding this is somehow possible because of other unpatched flaws in the OS, even though the AV knows about the virus, the virus can still get in through the OS flaw, then using that flaw disable the AV, and pwn the machine.

      Do I understand that incorrectly?

It's normally through another piece of software than the OS today actually. Microsoft finally got most of the holes in their swiss cheese plugged. Ironically, the programming code that many AV use also creates a hole for malware to enter through. Wish I had a few minutes to find those articles that hit recently.

yeah I read those too - darn AV companies!

I started my venture in to Linux Administration when I moved into a new position a little over 2 years ago. The thing that helped me get a handle on things in the beginning was participating in the Linux Group in the Spiceworks community and using a lot of Google-foo. A lot of the questions you are going to need answered have already been asked/answered a few thousand times over somewhere within that group...

Youtube is also helpful. TheUrbanPenguin channel maintained by Andrew Malice(sp?) is exceedingly informative.

      https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFFLP0dKesrKWccYscdAr9A

The resources listed on the right side of the screen from the BASH sub-reddit are also very helpful:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/bash/

He just recently wrote a book too (Urban Penguin, I think it's Andrew Malet or Mallet)

This guy seems fairly knowledgeable also

Thanks, I fixed the spelling. Thanks for the heads up on his book as well, looks like it might be a decent reference.
