    • RE: SaltStack Use Cases

Will be monitoring this thread like:

      halloween_1978_still.jpg

Also does it really work in Windows environments like it does on Linux, it seems like SaltStack and its brothers (Chef, Ansible, I forgot one) are tailored for Linux, and I dont want the master/server to be on Windows, that will be redundant I mean passing commands to Windows agents, and is their template library with commands where we can see what we can do under Windows.

    • RE: Large file sharing to, from and within mainland China

      @scottalanmiller @JaredBusch

I know my options, either Windows server acting as CA or OpenSSL in Linux, to be honest both routes was difficult to setup and requires a VM to be running at all times, to be the point I said screw it let them click the Advanced button and proceed to the site.

Cause encryption is occurring, with the self created ssl key + cert.

And our infrastructure is bit limited to be honest, so each VM has to be really needed to open one.

And the theoretical issue of 0.00001% of someone hijacking the server and do Man in the middle attack by routing to his SSL keys + cert is out of the park, if there is someone there with I.T skills I will pay him to help me.

True, but it depends on the users, right ? and i am blessed with my users who cant even bypass HTTPS SSL warning for internal sites.

    • RE: Where to start?

Start with old Desktop with Virtualization extension, something that you can install OS and dont have to remove cause of free space or you need it for something else.

Cause learning Linux or Centos or anything else needs environment, and virtualbox can work but it wont allow you play with KVM, and thats for me the big part of the fun.

Also you need to keep learning that means its is process some day you will leave it 4-5 days dormat cause your stuck in an issue the other day bulb lights up mainly due to reading this site and you get back on it.

Actually it happens when someone empties a folder (even if he emptied it for 1 moment then added more files later), the sync stops on other users and next cloud pop up asks them something like :

We have detected that someone cleared the folder do you want to clear it as well or keep files.

the thing is the Sync actually stops on other users till this is answered, the good thing to do then is to copy all the already files in the sync folder to the desktop for example then choose clear to get new files, so you have the option to compare stuff. I think I solved this by creating Dummy file so the folder never gets emptied but its up for the users to respect and understand those stuff, otherwise just default them to the web nextcloud app, where users can drag and drop files after finishing working on them.

Interesting. How often are people emptying folders? I've not seen this happen, but not sure we've ever done that, either.

Your users are smart unlike mine, I have to deal with doctors... people assume they are smart. but trust me they dont want to learn anything new

I reckon the best way from here is to check the internet speed at the office in China, and the file sizes of things that will get uploaded.

If they are big files and slow internet then you should host it onsite the nextcloud, but I dont know if China will allow other companies from accessing the site, maybe it will work if the companies are within china ? not sure though...

If small files sizes then yh host it in the cloud.

      +1000 on this

I use SoftEther VPN and even if I get 30 Mb/s out of it with enc which is nearly 80% of our bandwidth, using HTTP. When transferring files using tradition file methods it is terribly slow, we are taking about KB/s slow like 50 KB/s or something.

IF they are not so tech users, dont let them use the desktop client. Just let them use the web based app.

The desktop client maybe faster, but I have NextCloud in Prod with Onlyoffice integration and the desktop app keeps asking them question that they fail to understand especially when a folder is cleared.

Also cause it tries to keep copy offline on end user machine it can create headache for users working on same files, since you said few clients just let them work directly using the web.

@Romo said in How do you setup KVM networking on a desktop or laptop:

I usually use the Linux Bridge since it provides the features I require and they are relatively simple to set up.

macvtap should provide better performance cause it is the evolution of Linux bridge, and I use Fedora Virt-Manager to setup this and connect to KVM

Well its not easy, you have to go around all the building to check but I understand what you mean.

The reason for this is when I had the Cisco Wlan issue (different topic )I noticed some users had wrong IPs, also wrong subnet so I worried that somebody maybe did this.

Theoretically speaking big company, lots of floors, no good moderation.

And somebody wants to sabotage or harm the network or maybe learn about DHCP [Therotically speaking] and he can have access to the network using ethernet cable cause the whole building have accessible RJ45 wall plugs, and he made DHCP server using Windows Server ISO for example and, what will happen to the clients ...

Clients are Windows machines that get IPv4 + DNS automatically.
