We are just ending this project. The solution they chose was Zerto. We have gear in a colo with an EPL that allows for replication in real time. In the event of a disaster. I enable networking on my vms, change external DNS and we are good to go.

@Kelly said in Trying to find a good, on-premises, multi-department help desk application:

I was just talking to some vendors about this at a conference recently (yesterday). One of the ones that really caught my eye was TopDesk. I don't know if they support on-premises deployment or not, but I think the others might check the right boxes. I have no idea on pricing, but I believe they were the ones that do their licensing based on FTE count (due to having a broader focus than just ITSM).

Not one that I've heard of before.

There were quite a few that were there that I'd not heard of. This my first interaction with them. They've been around for quite awhile. It may be that they're more well known in the European market since they're based in the Netherlands.

Their back end for the hosted system is written in Dutch but they do provide some kind of translation ($Dutch_word = $English_word) so you can poke about. Also, they (TopDesk) must do the software upgrades (logging in remotely and doing the work). Not your team.

They also now have a SaaS version but that's not one of the OP's requirements we couldnn't get away fast enough.

      (I inherited workig with it).

@nadnerB Are these issues that linger with the current version, or not? It would definitely remove them from the running if they persist.

From what I've seen of the new version, it's just an upgrade to what we had. They don't appear to have made any drastic changes, just GUI, and maybe a few "catch up features"... cue the Jurassic Park Effect thoughts.

      Points of note:

Their customer portal is locked away, so you have to be a customer first before seeing anything in their walled off community. No backgrond automations Ticket visibility was a huge issue Lacked basic functions of modern helpdesks

The good things of the on-premesis install

We had unlimited agents Can be set up for multiple departments (which we had but that department bailed and followed us to FreshService)

I found that there was a specific way of thinking to operate it and there was little flexibility (one way to do things), settings were buried and difficult to find. Granted our setup had been poorly managed for years but the sales guy couldn't convince us that there had been dramatic changes since the last upgrade (several years), or that they could meet all our "Have to have's"/Deal breakers

      Good feedback. Thanks.

@dave247 : Have you performed a netstat -ps on another device in another network?
I'm here with a computer hardwired directly to a router in a new installation I'm working on today and am getting similar results to yours (except 0 redirects).

I'm guessing this is completely normal...

yeah I did it on my pc at home and saw similar results and came to about the same conclusion that it's probably completely normal 😕

We used Park Place for years without issue and only switched because Reliant gave us better pricing that Park Place could not match. We were happy with Park Place and so far have been happy with Reliant. Our extended coverages come up again in March so we will do the head-to-head battle again and see who comes out better.

This is good to know as we'll have some back end equip that will go EOL so I'll at least feel more comfortable about reaching out to both orgs.

@NDC said in Domain Controller DNS settings order - best practice?:

IIRC the difference is just a boot time thing. It can be slightly slower to bring the DC back online if it looks at itself for info and the DNS service isn't up yet. So if you point the first DNS entry to another machine you theoretically save a few seconds on reboot.

In theory, not something that you need if the other DNS is there 🙂

Yup. Its decently well known. Happens in the US too.

What's the scam called so I can learn more?

That I do not know. I'm sure someone has come up with a name, but it's a simple impersonation scheme. It's not so much a specific scam as just generally one person impersonating another.

@dave247 I wasn't attacking you or thinking you were being sarcastic. Just providing some more context.

At an old job I worked at we had a software called JobBOSS, and while the OOB worked for a large portion of businesses we spent over $130K customizing it for the way our business needed to operate.

That didn't include all of my time, creating reports that were required for the day to day operations.

No worries. I didn't mean to come off defensive either. Thanks for the input!

e systems was a consumer version of Windows 10 which the previous tech installed - no idea where he got it.

Probably came pre-installed on the Dell Computer and not imaged.

Actually it had Windows 7 installed on it but then the co-worker put his version of Windows 10 that I think he got from college on it, and a few other systems. So idk.

Windows 10 will activate on a Windows 7 license. So should be all set from that perspective.

I don't think so.. and it was a fresh install, or at least I know he used the Windows 10 key that he had been provided. That key was also used on about 5 other systems at the time.

You can work around it, but should accept the Win 7 key, too.

@dave247 How much would the Win10 subscription be in comparison? With that you get a lot of goods.

      For example:

As others said, you are clear here. Licensing is by the number of servers deployed, and the number of users on the network. AD is covered by those things, it's an "included feature" once you are covered otherwise. There is no specific licensing for AD, only for the server/user combo. So you can deploy AD in any configuration that makes sense for you. The licensing will remain the same whether you use AD in some complicated matter, just one domain, or even not at all.
