I really originally never thought about why you;d have to worry about power loss if you have a UPS, which is what started this thread.

Because, if you're like me, it's definitely worth having the UPSs, but it's not worth it to install generators. Of course if you have short term battery power, say 15 mins, I suppose you should probably have scripts etc in place to start shutting down your servers when you loose power for more than say 5 mins.

Yes, shutting down is always a viable option. You just need to make sure you have failover UPS that are properly monitored and maintained.

I pay for Spotify. Great selection, great interface, and their weekly suggest songs end up being right up my alley. They have a mobile app, and you can sync files offline in case you're somewhere that you can't get to the Internet.

I'm trying to decide between that, Rhapsody (which I used to use before Rdio), and iTunes Music. And I guess Google Play, too.

iTunes is nice at $14.99 for 6 people, but you have to enable family sharing, which to me seems like a lot of work of hiding things I don't want my kids to see.

      Interesting.

Frankly it only makes sense for MS to allow all their services access to online versions of Office whenever possible, for example your EOP1 plan - that's really cool that they will open an Excel sheet in Online Excel when using OWA, if they didn't it would severely limit the use (not that we weren't limited for decades).

But there are really convenient options. It's not like those don't exist and aren't used all of the time. It's just that you need to license them. But you CAN do recovery very easily.

The real issue is using Windows systems without being able to or willing to afford the cost to do so. Windows has a cost, which we all accept, to a point. The issues arise when we (or companies) don't want to spend enough to do it "right." Then it feels like there is a limitation with the product, but really it is just a lack of willingness to pay for what it cost to run it. But Windows is always a choice, as are the features like this kind of recovery.

      I fully understand this now.

I understand that I can do EXACTLY what I want, which IMO makes for a much safe/better/quicker backup and recovery. As long as I buy another license. Or, in the case of larger companies, am already properly licensed.

My take has always been that making it more difficult to backup and restore is not in the interest of anyone. Even though Microsoft could theoretically make more money,
a -- they probably aren't because most people just run the backups anyway without proper licensing (most probably unaware)
b -- they will push people to other systems when backups fail or they realize the "cost of Windows" as you say

Datto, StorageCraft, etc ... these companies have great products that take great backups, and easily let you know if they are working. We're not talking about running systems here. We are talking about EASILY checking to see if backups have worked. That's it. Yes, it's possible to do another way, but again, that adds complexity and downtime. Yes, there is a cost to those things, but considering how important backup and recovery is, I think it should be allowed.

My wife bought me something similar as a birthday gift, but I've never tried it. For whatever reason I'm only buying beer in bottles, so it won't fit.

Hang a couple of those off the server. Maybe we'll get close to that 495W!

Hell yes, what good is a single beer

The one big difference is that snowflake firms (or any size) tend to lean towards platform-based, agentless backups while DevOps firms almost never take platform-based backups because they have no need to ever restore a full VM, only the data.

Oooh, ok. That's the difference then. Must be for a different use. With Alfresco, each time you upload a change, it's saved as a version (major or minor). Then you can restore to versions, see edits made by users with timestamps and some other info.

Right, its even more granular. You can go back versions to individual document components.

Pretty much the idea is partially to address rapid rebuilds to disparate hardware like @BRRABill was looking for (but it is BYODrivers so you have to have that prepped) and partially leveraging the simple market pressure that has caused traditional workstations to be about the same cost as thin clients and when you remove the local drive on a traditional PC you can acquire and maintain them much more cost effectively (or whitebox your own easily) than a thin client while getting all of that extra CPU and memory that you can leverage.

BTW: from Googling around tonight, it appears the SYnology can also be setup to use commercial backup programs like CrashPlan.

Though that CloudSync that @MattSpeller is talking about also looks killer.

It does, but we have a VM specifically for that. I don't how it would perform on the synology, but I didn't want to add any more services to it. The VM just mounts the normal shares and backs them up to Crashplan.

I think the final takeaway, especially for non-IT folk, is to move away from a system that requires this sort of backup.

      Ideally, of course.

The age old answer ... "depends"

It seems as though you can install another DC, then replicate, then demote the EVAL one.

But I think I'll just go with not doing that. 🙂

Yes, it wouldn't be a functional AD if you could not do that. You risk schema issues, though.
