@scotth said in zip and . rar files?:

@WrCombs Yeh. 7zip is really good, opens about 4 dozen types of compressed files and is free.

Unlike Winrar which after a 40 day free trial will have to purchase and or Uninstall

WinRAR is like WinAMP.... just a joke that never had a place for actual use. Goofy, pointless paid software that was never as good as what was already there and free.

These are fighting words here. WinAMP was the greatest. It really whips the llama's ass.

@dafyre funny enough I'm at a speed awareness course this afternoon.

I had to do this when I was wayyyyy younger. It was actually not bad at all. The officer that led the class basically gave us a 2 minutes obligatory lecture about speeding and then the rest of the class he gave us a tour of the cop car and taught us everything about the lasers/radars and how to not get caught again lol

I would take that again any day over paying $250 and bonus insurance rate hikes.

Debating getting lifetime PlexPass while its on sale

Last year, I only paid $75 for my mine.

I just checked mine, I got it in 2014 for $75. Probably the best $75 I've ever spent. We use Plex SO much.

    • RE: Looking for virtualization advice

People always say that they don't want to manage the hypervisor and storage.... What is there to even manage? I've only used XS and Hyper-V, but every time I've ever set them up, they just run.... There is literally nothing to manage. Occasionally running updates is super simple on XS, an hour a month tops for 2 nodes. He's already planning for enough storage for the next 3 years, not like he's going to be upgrading that constantly, and if he does, just use move everything to the second node... Is there something I'm missing?

    • RE: Every other post on here is about Sodium...

@quixoticjeremy yours is about the only one. Anybody joining the community has no idea what SAM has vested interest in. Everybody here suggests products, it would be much better to be able to tell who sells what they're promoting. I can't remember the name of the company, but the WordPress provider convo last week was ridiculously long and heated trying to figure out the truth, when in fact it could have all been easily avoided if there was somewhere that listed who sells what...

I'm not well versed in either SaltStack or Ansible, but this sounds like a perfect use for them. There are tons of guides if you search tags for "ansible" or "salt"

We are the baby boomers of this generation, the last generation was "free love, expression etc" not "freedom to peer into my life any time you want"
The only way to work to correct issues like this is to remove the people who are actively attempting to undermine freedom to live in peace.

Right, but the Baby Boomers are their own generation, and they have done some serious work making politics the corrupt game that it is today.

Common values among most baby boomers I know, "don't do anything bad and you wont have anything to hide", "obey the police and you wont get shot", etc. Not sure I've ever met a "free love, expression, etc" boomer, at least they still aren't that way today.

    • RE: HyperV Partitioning

Why do you need logging on a separate partition? Skip the partitioning altogether. I would only provision what you need, and do it all on the R10. No need to setup blank VMs unless you have a very specific reason to. I would use all the R10 space as needed, then if you run out of storage there you could start chipping away at the R1. Typically you'd just buy all the same hard drives and have OBR10 instead of having 2 different arrays, this would give you better performance, reliability, etc.

Taking bets, but we just know that this is the cardinal sin of AD.

I am ashamedly guilty of this, too 😞 and we've been living with it for years. I just setup an A record in our AD DNS for www to point to our web host. If I had any issues other than this I would have fixed it by now, but it's not that big of a deal.

Amazon and Google settle feud, bring YouTube back to Fire TV devices

The Prime Video app will add support for Chromecast and Android TV, too.
Feuding tech giants Amazon and Google have come to an agreement on their streaming services.

Too late for Amazon, they already lost their Fire momentum and the product has been left in the dust. Even those of us that had believed in it and invested and unhooked them and replaced them with better devices at this point.

I'm still a fan of Fire TV devices. The entire ChromeCast concept annoys me. Give me a remote so I don't have to use my phone as one.

What did you replace yours with?

    • RE: Buying used server from another IT guy... Not sure what to look for

Also, as @Reid-Cooper the power draw on a NAS will be massively less, but it's extremely limited on processing power.

I'm kicking myself now for buying my Synology NAS 3-4 years ago, even though I really do love it. I could have had a full blown server that I can run whatever I want on for like $150 more.
