I am also checking https://www.graylog.org/ as this seems to be pretty famous and looks like a good alternative to ELK if anyone else looking at it.

Graylog is built on the same foundation as ELK. They are both log ingesting and interfaces applied on top of Elasticsearch.

      Have you tried Graylog?

No, on my long list of things to build.

was wondering the same, they could move all the Linux and save quite a lot of cost

They are "all in" on MS technologies. I followed them when they were building the system. Their sponsor is a 100% MS devotee (he's the father of VBA, for that matter) and there is no way that they would consider something based on logic. They were the pioneer user of the .NET MVC system and everything they have done is based on total lock in to MS, which has its advantages. But overall, they are using costly, slow components to do work. I'm sure that it works pretty well, but as good as it could? No way.

We've seen other communities like that make odd technology decisions leaving them locked in to old schemes and costing a fortune to do what is cheap with modern design choices.

I'm sure this goes against every best practice, but when I'm doing a bunch of admin stuff i issue a sudo bash and open up a new bash shell with sudo privileges

Not uncommon, and I do that a bit too (I use sudo -i su) but one of the good things about that is that it still tracks your user, it does not treat you as root for auditing.

For postfix to work for this i need to have the full SMTP+IMAP configured

You are associating SMTP and IMAP. They are unrelated. Completely and totally unrelated.

Postfix is SMTP, it has no association with IMAP handling.

Just install Postfix and your sending is fixed. Just put in your IMAP details of your Gmail account and your IMAP is fixed because your application absolutely has a built in IMAP client, that's what those settings are for. Those settings cannot work unless it is a client.

      @JaredBusch What do you use?

I have been using LastPass since 2007 or so.

The standard $12 subscription lets you share a folder. So I made a
"Company" folder with subfolders for each client. and shared the Company folder out.

For a small consultancy like ours, it works well.

$12 per month, or per year?

Also... how did you handle the LastPass breach?

Per year, and I changed my password. Nothing else needed. I do not have 2FA enabled because I feel getting a text or something to the same damned device I am logging in on defeats the purpose of 2FA. My current LastPass password is a phrase about 30 characters long or so. I have lastpass set to log out automatically when my browsers close, etc.

      You can use google authenticator.

That's what I use. I do have it turned off for my phone tho, no point in having the device you get the code from require a code. Don't really use the phone version except to lookup passwords when I'm away from one of my normal computers/browsers.

I think, unless you have some crazy log traffic, that if you can get 4GB for ELK in an SMB, you are nearly always good. I'd expect hundreds of servers to be able to log to that, as long as you have fast disks (it still has to get to disk fast enough no matter how much memory there is.)

We've had massive Splunk databases with 32GB - 64GB, but those are taking data from thousands and thousands of servers and doing so as a high availability failover cluster, so they have to ingest, index and replicate in real time.

Mentions just seems weird in email. Unless their name makes sense in the message itself, it just seems odd to include it in the body instead of just typing it in the TO field.

Because they do different things. People are in the "to" field all of the time because of "reply all" or just too many people being on the email. Mentions are so that they know that they are talked about in the email itself that they have already received:

To use Mentions, simply add the @ symbol in the body of an email. This will bring up your frequent contacts as well as access to your directory. Select the person you want to highlight, and they will automatically be added to the To: line if they were not already included. In addition, their name will be highlighted in the message in blue and they will receive an @ flag in their inbox view next to the message. Furthermore, they can sort by their @ messages to ensure they respond to all messages in which they were mentioned.

@Breffni-Potter I never really liked ceaser's methods as he use physical methods to keep dogs in control. I like Zak george which really helped me to train lexi few tricks real quick but without being aggressive or through punishments.

      https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMssKIjsDxXnCKbbCUBstbvql-KwV9ZDz

Another thing my trainer today suggested is to read http://www.amazon.com/The-Dog-Vinci-Code-Training/dp/1843583070 which basically not only help to to train dogs, but to know more about their behaviour. I am going to check if this is available at any local stores, if not order from Amazon
