Lost more time than I care to admit to Civ V on Steam the last couple of nights (damn you Humble Bundle).

Just broke a dish while trying to do the dishes. Argh.
Ooops!
It was super slippery. It was in the sink, but it broke the dish underneath in the sink

Soapy dishes and coffee jitters don't go well together

Arguably, another company tried something similar (Motorola, wasn't it?) and I can't remember if it was just poorly done, or too far ahead of its time, lol.
Canonical had a go too IIRC.

Doing a little dance at getting my second paycheck earlier than expected (was sold the contract as monthly, but turns out its fortnightly instead).

I was going to say its unlikely, but then I remembered that there are phones shipping with more RAM than my last laptop came with.

RE: Why Choose AetherStore Over a NAS?posted in IT Discussion
Does anyone know of an open source implementation or alternative to this? Just a distributed file system?
It looks like a good utility but I'm not sure I'm comfortable paying a company to manage tiered storage on my own hardware if I can do the same myself.

Appeals Court upholds judgement on US siezing data from overseas serversposted in News
A US appeals court has upheld a ruling that Microsoft can't be forced to give the Department of Justice access to customer emails stored outside the country.
In a 4-4 split, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals declined to reconsider its July decision denying the DOJ access to the emails of a drug trafficking suspect stored on a Microsoft server in Ireland.
The court had ruled that the Stored Communications Act (SCA) didn't cover searches outside the US, which should instead be handled through an existing mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT).
However, the court noted in its decision that the rather ancient SCA had been overtaken by technology: "It is overdue for a congressional revision that would continue to protect privacy but would more effectively balance concerns of international comity with law enforcement needs and service provider obligations in the global context in which this case arose," wrote Judge Susan Carney.

RE: Forget Ubuntu, now OpenSuse Linux comes to Windows 10posted in IT Discussion
@Kelly @aaronstuder In my head this is something I would expect to see more in a server environment, where a Linux application could be deployed on a Windows server in a more traditional "Role" than the overhead of deploying a full VM for the service.

@scottalanmiller Looking at the OpenSUSE blog post they're using the same Windows Subsystem for Linux and replacing the Ubuntu userspace with SUSEs one.

Holiday IT plans?posted in Water Closet
Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone had any IT-related plans over the holidays?
I for one hope to get a Nextcloud instance running on a Pi 3 (still debating the merits of CentOS + LXC vs Ubuntu + snap) and import my ownCloud/baikal data in there, and get virtd LXC migration between my VPS and laptop working.

CephFS? That's kind of concerning.
Huh. I wonder why that is.
Important: CephFS currently lacks a robust ‘fsck’ check and repair function. Please use caution when storing important data as the disaster recovery tools are still under development. For more information about using CephFS today, see CephFS for early adopters

Richard Donner. Met him at Comic-Con San Diego about 10 years back. Lovely gentleman, graciously signed a Superman comicbook for me.

Not really sure the Seafile graph is fair or representitive, given the way the projects are split across different repos.

I'm not sure what Apple does in terms of support for an OS after they release the next one
Generally, what Microsoft is trying to do now. Update to the newest version if your hardware supports it, or you're plum out of luck. Very occasionally you might get a back ported security fix if the issue is big enough.
