Why do these units state they work with all 1996 or newer except hybrid or electric?
I only own hybrid cars.
Probably different onboard communications protocol?

Can't say enough positive stuff about getting an OBD2 reader, they're freaking fantastic.
I drive my poor car so freaking hard and I've had a bad misfire when it gets up to temp that no one has been able to diagnose. In less than 24h owning this widget I discovered it was misfiring on all 4 cylinders when it got hot on a low tank of gas. My theory is that the turbo is boiling the gas return line and it's heating up the tank. When the fuel pump goes to work it's not sending enough pressure (because hot gas / insufficient lube in the pump (gas lubes the pump)).
TL;DR epic little widget.

1996 or before was OBDI hybrid not sure why they say that they use OBDII. Some fully electric don't though

Wow you are overpaying big time for that ODBII sensor unless I am missing something. I got a $20 unit a few years ago and I use it all the time. It uses wifi not bluetooth, but it's amazing all the information it has about my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I was able to fix something that I never realized the computer would figure out. My jeep ran like crap when it was cold outside and I couldnt figure out why. Our winter is like 2 weeks so I made it through the winter fine. Next time I ran codes I saw an error that stated temp was too cold. When I looked up the error, I found out its the thermostat. I took the thermostat out in the summer and never put it back in.
I know its minor but I thought that was pretty cool.

I drive form Chicago to St Louis twice a month. I want stats, so the ODB II would get that to my phone easily enough. But I would also like a dashcam. So my thought was why not have a dashcam with the stats overlayed.

Throw in some wideband O2 sensor and gas pressure gauge and you'll know for sure. For me what you say sound like fuel pump issues.

I got one at Harbor Freight that has an LCD screen for like $40. I used it a ton on my wife's Jeep Patriot because it sucked. It helped out a lot. -

The $20 ones are passive, but they give you all the information you need and more. You have to the Torque App to use them. I am not sure if an app is required for the one you are looking at.

Speaking of 02 sensors they are the first thing I replace when I get a vehicle. I buy older vehicles and the 02 sensors make a huge mileage and performance difference right off the bat.

For $20, I just bought the one you mentioned. It was linked all over and Amazon prime say it will be here today.
I have an unused Samsung Galaxu S3 that I will try out the CaroO dashcam app on.

The camera, the pi and the ODB2 cable over USB. I think this would likely be a great fit for your needs.

right, but for now, all i will have is the ODB2 sensor and a phone with an app.

You could potentially also get a GPS module and record GPS positions on screen. That would be a cool use as well. Although you could easily do this with a phone too.

The programming would be cool. It looks like the Pi is powerful enough to do the video encoding too.
