I'm not a Scotch drinker but the few I know swear by Glenlivet. Every time I try it I just get the distinct taste of wood bark and lighter fluid.

I suspect that our good bourbons have a price penalty over there, as well.

I mostly drink Jim Beam, which at £13 a 70cl bottle is just about the cheapest whisky you can buy in the UK (I appreciate that probably doesn't count as good bourbon, but I like it).

I love Jim Beam, and I LOVE bourbon, but alas I can no longer drink bourbon...first time I ever got sick (only happened twice) was after polishing off a bottle of Kentucky Fire (Fireball bourbon basically, made by Jim Beam) with a couple friends one night...I think the extra sugar in the cinnamon made me sick and I can't even stand the smell of bourbon now, which makes me VERY sad...maybe in a few years...

Oh so many options! I'm looking for some good top shelf stuff...not like millionaire level spending, but something that's around $100/bottle or even a bit more.

There are good scotches... rather painful for those who don't normally drink them. Are these for people who like scotch, or random people?

I have a friend that really wants to start getting into GOOD scotches, and I owe him a few favors, so now that I got the other job, I promised him that once I've got a couple things squared away, I'm gonna get us some good scotch and we're gonna have a night we stay in and polish it off together. 🙂

I've tried the 16, 18, and 22 Glenlivet. The 22 was surprisingly smooth. The 16 was harsh.

I think that's what my friend Mike has is Glenlivet, but I'd have to ask him.

@thanksajdotcom If he likes Glenlivet he will like Glenfiddich too. I know in Texas, the 12yr Glenfiddich is $60 bottle... but you should be able to find a 15, 18, and 21yr bottle as well.

Texas is actually much more expensive than NY for that stuff, believe it or not. Weird, I know.

NY, SC and TX are the whackiest that I have encountered, myself.

The only scotch I've tried that I loved was Balvenie 12 Double Wood. It's not peated, so it doesn't taste like burnt mud (like most scotches). I would describe the flavor as much more like a high end rum or American whisky. They have many other non-peated options as well.

I'd recommend Crown Royal. It's a whiskey, but it's about $50 and almost everyone likes it.

I tend to drink very cheap liquor. $10-$20 bottles, but every once in awhile I splurge for Crown because I do love it. I just can't imagine spending over $50 for a bottle. It's liquor and in the end the goal is to get a buzz, drunk, or wasted.

Glenfiddich single malt is a good choice. My personal fav is Glenfiddich, balentines (a cheap but very smooth), and just recently tried jameson irish whiskey- also smooth. Used to have Jack Daniels but never really liked the smoky taste of it.

Has anyone tried blue label or chivas regal 12 years?

Quite a few whisky drinkers on ML then.

                                            So............water? ice? mixer? or straight?

I'll often have an ice cube, but no water. And if it's cheap whisky and I'm in a bar, I might have ginger ale with it.
