The problem is that you have lost the license you mean? Windows 2003 can just be virtualized, I believe. No special license needed.

It's an OEM license, so it cannot be used for the virtualization, isn't it?

From my understanding, and past Microsoft officials, you can run the OEM license virtualized as long as it is on the same physical hardware.

      Yes, that you can do.

        So the first questions....

        1. Can 2003 R2 be updated to 2008 or newer? That might help a lot.
        2. Can you retire any of the workloads or update them?
        3. Can any of the workloads be moved off of windows?

Oh, that's a different issue. YOu just need to get new licensing in that case.

I agree, but I will say we had to virtualize an XP box last year, and when one my techs called MS about how to license the VM with the key we had (since he had trouble applying it to activate over the internet and via phone), they told him they did not care because XP is no longer supported. I wonder if they would say the same about Server 2003?

@iroal my only question to this is why not P2V the system and reactive the system with a new product key.

Or purchase a 2003 R2 key, and build a new VM and then setup the environment, importing the data etc. Yes you have to spend on licensing, but you have to anyways.

Can I buy an W2003 OEM license or I need a Retail version ?

I've seen W2003 Oem in Ebay

I would assume retail (but I'm no licensing expert)

He can use OEM. Just cannot move the VM around.

I'll use same key, I'll try to activate via phone, in case It does not work I'll buy a new Oem License in Ebay.

If it were me, and I had the install software for Navision, I would try to install it on win2008 server - if it works great, if not, well you know for sure now. In either case, I'm sure you're talking about a piece of software that no longer actually has company support, so the fact that the support documentation says 2003 is not relevant.

This would be illegal, technically, assuming you don't buy another license. Legally you need to buy either another OEM or a retail version or a volume license for something current, then use downgrade rights to use the 2003 server.

I made the test but It crashes, only solution was use Xp mode in W7.

Now the problem It's what to do with Windows 10 users, Xp mode is not included in W10..

Yes It's the typical Server/Client Application.
Server only works in W2000 W2003 and client in W2000 or Xp.

It's not possible to upgrade because of all the change done in the original model, next version Navison 4.0 can be install in W7 and W2008.
