      Think that I found what I want. What do people think of the soon to release Zotac Magnus?

        It is $799 and has an Intel Core i5 dual core proc, nVidia 970 GPU. I'll have to add memory and an SSD, no big deal there. Has quad HDMI output which is overkill but pretty flexible.

          The big deal is that it is so small and compact. Perfect for carrying with us as we travel. Looks like it might be very similar to the upcoming SteamBox that Zotac is making too. But I would be loading up Windows 10 in this case (as much as I love the idea of the SteamOS console system.)

            GTX960, not 970 - looks really good for the money but I'd make sure that mofo has some space around it. I guarantee you it'll get nuclear meltdown hot if you don't.

              No Memory, No HDD, No Operating System

              Make sure you get those at the same time 😉

                The M.2 SATA SSD slot

                ooooo shiny! highly recommend you use that for primary storage.

                  Yeah, need to have all of that 🙂 I'm looking at picking this up in early December while I am in Texas for the holidays. It's not extreme but it is pretty good, I think. I want something that is good for gaming but not completely crazy. It's ability to travel is more important. It will be used for Netflix more than for games, but I don't want to do without good access to games too.

                    @scottalanmiller 960 + i5 = anything you want in 1080P for games

                      That's what I am hoping. I won't have access to anything more than a 2D 1080P display for a year or two at least. I want something that will rock current games at that resolution. Things like Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

                        @scottalanmiller Should do just fine. My personal bet is that you'll run out of CPU before you run out of graphics card. That's a mighty little i5 but it's still only dual core 15watt.

                          It does have HT though, that's something. I was surprised by them going with a dual core CPU rather than a quad. But a lot of games just don't leverage the threads well.

                            That is a very recent i5, launched just a few months ago.

                              $281 recommended price on the proc.

                                @scottalanmiller I'll rephrase for clarity-

                                That's a mighty, but little i5

                                  Ah ha, okay. That makes more sense. It feels to me like it will be able to do the job, at least most of the time.

                                      The vast majority of our games are older, I don't play that many current ones. It'll be used far more for last generation games and older than for current ones. More BioShock, Skyrim, Fable Anniversary than stuff that is just now releasing. But I don't want to miss out on what is out now either.

                                        @scottalanmiller don't even begin Witcher3 unless you have a looooooooooot of time to kill. It makes Skyrim look brief and lacking in content.

                                          I've got Witcher 1 and Witcher 2 to get through first!

                                            I would definitely be interested to hear how that machine handles games - I'm similarly concerned with the overheating potential, but I suppose using SSD vs HDD might help out with that a bit.
