I decided against purchasing a new gaming computer (against my fiance's will). I figured I had more important things, like a house, car, wedding, honeymoon, etc... Thanks everyone for the advice.

Odd, that's what my fiance said... she isn't even a gamer.

I still need to get the ring, and it's gonna be a few months before I can pop the question, but I need to start saving for an engagement ring.

Famous rule was to spend one month's gross salary on a ring. We were taught that when I was a kid. It's getting less common now. All engagement rings are just the De Beer's marketing engine. So it will only get so much less common.

I think I spent about seven months gross salary, though. LOL "Thankfully" I wasn't earning a lot at the time.

Word of advice, work with a local jeweler, you can generally get exactly what you want for significantly less then what you would pay at a Kay's or a Zales. They are also much better at working within a budget.

Oh yeah, you should never, ever go to one of those places. If they advertise on TV, it's not a place to be buying jewelry, especially not an engagement ring.

What's odd was I recall being taught to spend 4 months..

Yeah, there was a time when that was said. In the 1980s they got it up to two months.

I spent two weeks pay on my fiance's. That was more then I wanted to spend... but I was made an offer I couldn't refuse.

I'm lucky, my wife doesn't desire (at least not to me - even when prodded) high end jewelery. The nicer stuff she has is just because I wanted to get it for her..

Well when you make six figures like Scott - two weeks is a huge rock!

                                    I've heard 3-6 months. I've even heard 1 year!

Kays and Zales both sell crap. I haven't decided what to do yet for the ring yet. The place I had always planned to go isn't an option, as it's in NY. I like the idea of working with someone local. 1 month's gross pay would be quite a pricy ring and would be way more than my soon-to-be fiance would want me to spend. I'll probably end up spending about 1-pay-period's amount on it. Even that she would be upset about...

Coming from a woman. It's not about the $$ and if it is run the opposite direction now. My first engagement ring came from Ames and cost my fiancé what was equal to about 3 weeks of his salary. Of course he was 16 and worked at McDonalds. Even though many years later he replaced it with a much nicer ring I still wear the original. It's about the thought and love behind it. Not the freaking $$!!!

I am pretty sure who ever made the rule about how much to spend was a jeweler.

We used a custom designer in Rochester that we really liked.
