Vultr will begin charging for snapshot storage on October 1

Why is Vultr making this change?
Vultr now has hundreds of thousands of customers, with millions of cloud instances deployed. Because snapshot storage was previously free, users tended to leave old snapshots in their accounts indefinitely (we get it - we would too if it was free!).

Unfortunately, these snapshots take up real disk space, which is expensive to provide. With more new users every day, and 18 locations around the world, it is no longer possible to provide free storage for the rapidly-growing number of old and unused snapshots.

I cannot blame them for this one. I know I go months before I clean up old snapshots.

@jaredbusch Did they offer you a "cloud consultation" - if so, was it worthwhile?

I have no idea what this means. So my guess is "no".

Honestly I like this move. I hate that the platform has to cost more because tons of other people have lingering, unused snapshots that they don't even care about just because it is easier not to delete them.

The only thing that was a bit of a surprise to me was that there’s only 10 days notice. And there was no broadcast emails yet. I only found out about it because I was in the control panel and saw the banner.

That is definitely odd. I've not seen any notification either.

I suppose since I shutdown both instances I had running, I need to go back and ensure that the snapshots are cleared. Unless they auto-delete upon server termination.

Snapshots are not tied to a server instance

@jaredbusch Vultr reached out to me in an Email:

"I’ll keep this short and sweet. First, I just want to thank you for being a Vultr customer. We really appreciate your business.

My name is , and I am a Solution Architect at Vultr. We know that, like many of our customers, you are probably using both Vultr and another cloud (or multiple clouds). We recently launched a competitive discount program for our current clients and I’d love to offer you further incentives to bring more of your cloud workloads over to Vultr (and hopefully save you more money).

Whether your workloads are growing exponentially or you’re looking to lower your overall cloud expenses, I’d love to learn about your current architecture and provide some expert guidance."

Just assumed you do a lot of biz with them too and that they probalby reached out to you as well and was wondering if it was a BS sales call or worth the chat.

Ah, cool. Well I do, but it is over many accounts which don't have anything in common.

                            Boo! But yeah. Reasonable decision.

@eddiejennings I am going to be an odd person on this one, but I like the decision. There are often times I want an additional snapshot and can't because mine are maxed out. Now I can pay for an extra one and grab it. If I use more, than its my issue and I pay the cost. Completely get it.

I'm just trolling a bit. It's a completely reasonable decision.

Not trolling, but exactly the same sentiment. It is something that I have zero issues with.

I started with VMware many moons ago and as a result, cleaning up snapshots was pretty much mandatory or deal with "delta hell". Since it became habitual, it naturally translated to the cloud.

Interesting that BackBlaze is now integrated with Vultr. No egress fees. This may prove useful

Very. I plan to use this combination of features soon.
