@scottalanmiller This has to do with a review I was asked to do. So I would be primarily using it as a home lab, maybe even bringing it into work to throw some stuff at it.

I get to keep it, whichever one I choose. It's mine.

Is HP giving these to you personally? do you get to keep it after the review?
Assuming you can live with the noise why wouldn't you go for the bigger one?
The main advantage to the SFF drives is you can add more drives later assuming you don't fill it now.

Yeah and yeah. The 310e isn't a noisy server but the 350 is about twice the size and looks like it could be a rack mount server or a tower. I'm assuming they wouldn't fill the server out with 8 SFF SAS drives.....

Well, since I've already used a ML310e G8 before, I'll go with a ML350e with SFF drives this time to keep the review fresher.

                    OIC. That's pretty sweet.

So I have a choice between reviewing a ML310e G8 v2 or a ML350e G8 v2 with my choice of LFF drives or SFF drives. The ML350e would be a new system to me, as I'm already familiar with the 310e. The 350e looks HUGE, and possibly loud. BUT, has 2x CPU's instead of 1x.

I'm going to have to sit and think about this one for a few minutes.....

I would assume the 350e is as quiet as all their other servers. Unless it is in your bedroom, you will likely not be bothered by the noise level.

I would go with the standard form factor drives as they are usually cheaper. Obviously, if they will fill it up with 8 to begin with, the SFF would be a good choice 😜

I honestly don't know. I was contacted, I've agreed to write a review in exchange for one.

Well not really. I have once made a very opinionated post about a Cisco product that I purchased and was extremely let down by. It's on my blog from about 3 of 4 years ago.

                            Search Cisco RV120.

                              I'd personally go for the 350e w/SFF

@DenisKelley I replied to them and said to do the 350e with SFF earlier. I'm more concerned with how much RAM and CPU they are sending with it. Am I to get a single CPU ML350e with 8GB RAM? or a super sweet 96GB+ Dual CPU 8 core+ system? Dual Powersupply? Charge me to ship it? It's still a big mystery at the moment.

Even if it is only a single proc with 8 gigs.. you can add the others yourself down the road.
I'm guessing they might only give you two, maybe 4 drives to setup either RAID 1 or RAID 10 for testing.

@Dashrender I've already told them I'm happy just to be given the opportunity. I don't really care at this point, I'll have something I can use for a home lab at the least which is something I don't have at the moment.

I want to +1 Bill's last post but the idea of adding to his reputation just because I like his post doesn't seem to make sense.

Better than getting ten points whether anyone likes it or not!

I never knew that until a few months ago. Seriously, always thought it was just from +1's and BA's / HP's / How-To's etc.

Yeah, the vast majority of the points are just from participating. You get 11 points for every thread you say "me too". Only takes a second. So the points actually encourage shallow, pointless interactions. BA points are so hard to get that they are a waste of time if points are the goal.
