Veeam set up to back up to a Synology RAID 1 NAS with enough storage to meet your recovery point objectives.

Backup file destination should be password protected with read-only access for all accounts but admin and Veeam user.

A pair of NAS devices set up identically could be used to provide an air-gap for the backups.

A small single drive NAS/external enclosure could provide a similar setup.

StarWind Virtual Tape Library set up as a backup destination that can then trickle the backups up to BackBlaze would be one of the least expensive off-site/cloud solutions.

well said! thank you very much.

And doens't mean a damned thing because you never gave any actual detail.

That's your opinion, if Phlipelder is selling me a product. I already start discussing with him the details while the other sellers still asking for questions and doesn't seem to have an idea. I feel most of you guys have an idea but choose to do the "play hard to get" approach. Lol.

I'm sorry that most of us want to offer you a good solution instead of telling you to buy the first product that gets mentioned.

Not that Veeam is bad, it's very good. We just don't have any idea if it's a good solution for you.

If this was anyone working for me, they'd be fired after they perform a full audit of everything they've done to date.

I'm not really sure you know what you are talking about? Usually an audit will compose of requirements > Audit > correction necessary based on last audit. There is no firing in the process. You could be referring to a different thing and it seems i'm on a different page as well.

He's saying that your approach to this is reckless. You're not providing important details of your environment or even wanting the best possible solution. It seems like you're looking for somebody to sell you snake oil. If you worked for him and he discovered your process, you'd be gone.

The people in this thread are asking for specific details because they legitimately want to help you find the best solution. If you want VM snapshots, there's going to be a different best product than if you want to backup databases... It's all relevant, regardless what you may think.

When i get few questions and still not get any answer i felt i may need to scrap this one. But since 1 idea came up, i could work on the only idea i got. Make sense?

No, it doesn't make sense. Call Unitrends and when they answer the phone, simply say "backup Windows on ESX, with some databases" and they're going to ask you 20 more questions... the same thing we're doing.

Even getting "windows, ESX, and databases" out of you took 50 posts....

@Obsolesce I've not seen Wasabi yet.

BackBlaze is integrated into several levels with Veeam and/or StarWind thus my suggestion to go in that direction.

Plus, in my mind the big point in BackBlaze's corner is their push-back against drive manufacturer's NDA on publishing reliability statistics. They are one of the only ones that I know of that do so every year. It's one report that I read as soon as its available ever year.

You have a point, but since one solution seems acceptable. I feel the best approach should be to present another better solution based on the current solution in the table.

"Solution" is overused there. It's a product, not a solution. It is unknown if it is a solution in this situation or not. It's a product you can buy, yes. But that's a far cry from solving a problem. It is possible that it won't do what is needed at all, or it is possible that it is perfect. But without deep knowledge, we can't compare it to other products in relative terms, or know if it is a solution for you or not, in absolute terms.

No, it's not his opinion. That's fact. You did not give enough details for anyone to know what is or isn't a solution for you. You've only given enough details for someone to sell you a product. That's a completely different thing.

Here is a simple question - if your boss found out that you got pricing on products and presented them while intentionally avoiding finding out if they were even viable solutions for him, would he think you were doing a good job? Or would he think something bad was going on.

What goal do you have in getting pricing and products, when there is no known result needed from the product? We could sell you literally anything and it might or might not work. There is no point to your process other than spending money.

That's simply something you can't know. Veeam may not be able to back up his data.

No, you are playing the "hard to help" game. We are trying to keep your company from getting tricked. Any of us could have said any backup product would just work and throw you to the wolves. We all known about Veeam, Unitrends, etc. I even mentioned them. But I was honest that you didn't provide enough info to know if they would work for you or not and so we couldn't tell you if they were actually backups for you, or if they were solutions rather than just products.

There is always someone willing to sell you something because you are demanding to be foolish. We tried to protect you, but you got defensive and lept right to the exact thing we had explicitly warned you about as if you hadn't just been warned.

You are acting angry that we didn't try to take advantage of you.

There is no such thing as the best backup product. For instance, Veeam is great but it doesn't back up network shares. Unitrends is good too but its appliance needs Hyper-V installed as a role and so on. It all comes down to finding the right product to suit particular needs, rather than trying to look for ones with all bells and whistles.

Regardless, you simply can't properly propose or suggest anything related to backups without knowing organisational RTO/RPO for the said services (file servers). Business continuity and disaster recovery documentation should include these objectives. Otherwise, work with the finance dept to find out how much downtime are they're able to sustain without much harm to the business and go from there.

It feels like the OP thinks that this is a seller's forum as opposed to a group of IT professionals looking to help each other out. Or just trolling to waste time. Or a college kid who was given an assignment and is looking for us to provide the answer.
