@Emad-R probably because at that size it doesn't matter if you're backing up just files or entire VM, the difference is probably within 2-3%. And restoring entire VM is much simpler task than installing new server, configuring it, and restoring TBs of files.
I'd like to see a Windows server that installs in 5 minutes. With Linux and configuration management tools you might be able to get it running in such a short amount of time, but if he runs Windows, forget about 5 mins, 50 is more likely.
Just patching Windows Server would take at least 50 minutes, ignoring just installing Windows.

But yeah, at 2-3TB of files, you're looking at maybe 100GB for a Windows Server C partition. Hardly worth not including that and having that restore path as an option.

File Servers with 2-3TB of storage, hosted as Virtual Machines, requiring both onsite and remote backup support. With a backup schedule of daily.
That still isn't a lot to go on but at least allows people to give you options of software.
What are you using today, and are there any pain points from it?
Right, and with only that info, SCDPM does it best. That's from experience. But as said, that's without any other considerations taken.

Doh I forgot, M$ is the answer to everything.
There is simply not a better more efficient, easy to restore solution I have tested. I tried all the big hitters, and the major FOSS solutions, in a crazy environment. It just works. I could back up a 20TB server every 15 minutes without breaking a sweat and barely using any space. File level browsing of any backup, insanely quick restores of files, shares, servers, VMs. All the sweet stuff, yes even including tape and cloud backups and restore aspects. There's just way too much to be said about it and I'm not even denting it.
The issue is cost and expertise in doing it correctly. Other than that it by far blows everything else straight out of the water.

Appliance approach is fine, but still requires agents. It's the software that matters. What hypervisor and OSes are these things? Also, no backup software or hardware can blindly back up just anything. DBs especially cannot be ignored, they have to be addressed at the application layer.

@justin867 what databases? We need ALL the info. Backups are not a blind process. You have to know every piece of what is being backed up. We actually had a session on this at MangoCon as to why this is.

Yeap, the audit will kill me if i dont have decent backup in this day and age. lol. also, its an assurance for a good night sleep.

I say you should have a program that opens every file, database and table and takes a picture of everything. Those pictures get printed out to a nearby printer and a carrier pigeon flies that image to your head off.
Problem solved, you can rebuild with printed pictures, no?

Exactly, so to protect against a crash, you need a true backup, not a "crash consistent" backup. Crash consistent is all backup software by itself will address, and that does absolutely nothing to protect you from a crash, literally nothing. Because it restores as if you had just crashed. I'm asking these questions specifically so that we can talk about your options to protect against a crash.
